THERESE NEUMANN DIES KONNERSR EUTH, Germany, (NC) - Therese Neumann, Ger man stigmatic, has died here at the age of 64 of a heart ailment. Father Joseph Naber, 92- year-old former pastor of Kon- nersreuth who was for a long time an advisor of Miss Neu mann, was at her bedside when she died (Sept. 18). Miss Neumann began to suf fer the stigmata — bleeding from what appeared to be wounds in her hands, feet and forehead as did Christ during his Passion—36 years ago. For three decades thousands of people witnessed her sufferings which took place in a darkened room of the cottage where she lived with her family. In re cent years, visitors were barred because of her poor health. For more than a quarter of a century, it was claimed, Miss Neumann ate no food save the Eucharist. It was also report ed that she spoke Aramaic, the language of Christ, during her sufferings. Church authorities have nev er ruled on the possible super natural origin of Miss Neu mann’s stigmata. In 1957, Fa ther Reginald Omez, O.P., re ported that a medical investi gation authorized by the Reg ensburg diocese and urged by the Bavarian Bishops and the Sacred Congregation of the Holy Office was never carried out because of the attitude of Miss Neumann’s father. Each week, from Thursday midnight until the afternoon of Friday, she is said to have suffered an ecstatic agony dur ing which drops of blood exuded through the pores of her skin. Miss Neumann’s abstension from food and drink, and some other aspects of her life, made her a controversial figure. Born in Konnersreuth, a small village near the Czech oslovak border, on April 9, 1898, Therese was the eldest of 10 children. K.C.
