To become an officer in the SGA a student must file for nomination and be screen ed by a special nominating com mittee. Upon being cleared by the nominating committee he is then declared a candidate. A vigorous campaign follows, and on election day the entire student body elects officers on a plurality basis. Booths, each of which will carry out a different theme, will be sponsored by the individual classes and managed by the students and members of the Auxiliary. A diamond brooch will be raffled on the evening of the 7th. FRANCIS from Savannah. Approximately 20 professed and unprofessed members of the SAVANNAH - The Rev. John Cuddy, Diocesan Superintendent of Schools and Vice Rector of Savannah’s Minor Seminary of St. John Vianney was the guest speaker at the monthly meeting of the St. Vincent’s Alumnae Association. Father Cuddy spoke on the 21st Ecumenical Council. Mrs. C. L. McKenzie, Jr., newly elected president, intro duced the following officers who will serve with her during the coming year: Vice-President, Mrs. Carol Kelly; Recording Secretary, Mrs. John E. Cor coran; Corresponding Secre tary, Mrs. John Dillon; Trea surer, Mrs. Bart Shea. It was decided at this meeting that a homemade cake sale SAVANNAH - A large num ber of parents attended the first meeting of the Sacred Heart Home and School Association. Father Terence Kernan, O.S. B. welcomed all to the associa tion and urged continued attend ance and cooperation during the coming year. Teachers were introduced lay organization gathered with the Sisters for Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament. Afterwards the Sisters enter tained the Third Order members in the reception room of the Convent. . . .Another plug for the ANNUAL BARBE CUE DINNER AND FALL FES TIVAL to be sponsored by ST. JAMES CHURCH to be held on Saturday, Oct. 13th. Dinners will be served from 2 to 7 p.m. This year the patrons"will be offered either Barbecued Chicken or Barbecued Spare- ribs. RT. REV. MSGR. Box 2227, Savannah, Georgia would take place in November for the benefit of the Building Fund, and committees for this event will be announced at a later date. Sister M. Fidelis, R. S. M. Principal of the Academy, ex tended an invitation, on behalf of the Student Council, to the Alumnae members to attend the Senior Class Ring Dance at the General Oglethorpe Hotel on November 3rd. Sister M. Jean, R. S. M. alumnae advisor, welcomed the members and offered the assis tance of all the Sisters at any time it was needed by the mem bers of the Association. A social hour was enjoyed with Mrs. Margaret Horne acting as hostess. and following this Sister Mary Vivian, principal, gave an en lightening and informative talk on the curriculum and aims for the coming year. Plans were discussed to hold the annual Halloween Party with Mrs. W. J. Crump and Mrs. J.E. Brooks as Co-Chairman. Deanery Holds Board Meeting SAVANNAH - The Executive Board of the Savannah Deanery held a dinner meeting in the Rebel Room at Johnny Ganem’s with Mrs. Cecile Fitzpatrick, President, presiding. Each of the Committee Chair men gave a brief summary of their plans for the ensuing year. The Annual Convention of the National Council of Catholic Women will be held in De troit November 3rd through November 7th, 1962. Mrs. Fitz patrick will attend as a dele gate from the Savanneh Deanery. Monsignor John D. Toomey, Spiritual Moderator, spoke in terestingly on the Ecumenical Council which convenes in Rome in October. SACRED HEART HOME AND SCHOOL - Father Terence, O. S. Sacred Heart Home & School Association CONSTITUTION WEEK - With feelings of pride and patrio tism these students of Nativity of Our Lord School, Thunder bolt, display their copy of the Constitution of the United States. The interested onlooker is Mr. Bart Shea, at a school assembly prepared by the seventh and eighth graders in observance of Constitution Week. On the right of Mr. Shea are Gale Clutts, Donna Boykin, and Michael Mahany, the Civics Club President. One of the highlights of the assembly was a panel discussion prepared by a group of eighth grade girls. Thrbughout the school during the week were seen patriotic posters done by the students of the various grades. As an outcome of this Constitution Week the children had become better acquainted with the Constitution, its worth, and its meaning. They thanked God for inspiring our fore fathers to write this protection of our freedom for all time. AUGUSTA BREAKFAST - Bishop Thomas J. Egan BRUNSWICK -The Altar and Rosary Society of St. Francis Xavier Church met in the school cafeteria. Rev. Paul Burkort, S.M., pas tor, opened the meeting with the recitation of a decade of the ros ary for world peace. Miss Mary Parker presided at the business meeting and introduced Mrs. Herman Roth, a new member from Detroit, Michigan. The members regretted to learn that the former secre tary, Mrs. John M. Carter, Jr. will no longer be an active member of th e club due to the fact that her husband has been transferred to Savannah. Best wishes were extended to Mrs. Carter by members. It was decided that all of the ladies of the parish would be contacted before the next meet ing in an effort to secure ad ditional members for the club. Mrs. Paul Mullins, treasurer, announced that the Pantry Shower recently held for the Sisters was a great success, and thanked the ladies for their cooperation. Mrs. John Fernandes stated that she had been contacted by one of the local Brunswick civ ic clubs and they had indicated that they were interested in making cancer pads for Our Lady of Perpetual Help Can- Plan Fall Festival At Brunswick The first meeting of the St. Francil Xavier Home and School Association was held in the School Cafeteria. Rev. Paul Burkort, S.M., pastor, opened the meeting with a prayer, and asked for Divine guidance for the group dur ing the coming school year. The officers for the ensuing year are as follows: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gordon, president; Mrs. L. L. Ross, Vice Presi dent; Mrs. J. M. Henderson, Recording Secretary; Mrs. Robert Sheahan, Treasurer; Mrs. D. Paul Owens, Corres ponding secretary; Mrs. Mary Scarborough, Program Chair man. Grade Mothers are as fol lows: Eighth grade, Mrs. Loughlin; 7th grade, Mrs. B.W. Murray; 6th grade, Mrs. Rus sell Rose; 5th grade, Mrs. M. M. Manning; 4th grade, Mrs. Manuella Rocha; 3rd grade, Mrs. John Baldwin; 2nd grade, Mrs. Robert Bagaria; 1st grade, Mrs. James Hayes, and kinder garten, Mrs. Thomas Womack. Mrs. L. L. Ross, Vice Pres ident introduced the faculty - Sr. Loretta Joseph, Superior and Principal, 6th grade; Sr. Anne, Kindergarten; Sr. Mary Cecile, 1st grade; Sr. Mary Manuela, 3rd grade; Sr. Ce celia Jospeh, 5th grade; Sr. John Cecile, 8th grade; Sr. Bernardine, in residence; Miss Mary Lenz, 4th grade; Mrs. Rosemary Kick, 2nd grade; and Mrs. Dean McCoy, 7th grade. Tentative plans were discus sed for the Fall Festival which is held annually and is the main event of the school year. The affair will be held in October at the Guard’s Armory. Mrs. Rosemary Patrick is chairman for this event. Father Burkort expressed his appreciation for the splendid attendance and par ticularly noted the large num ber of father's present. Joines, Jr. pro gram chairman, was designated to read several pamphlets deal ing with catholic action and to select the one best suited and submit material for discussion at the next-meeting. A vote was taken and it was decided to have future meetings in the home of the members in order to create a closer union and a more relaxed atmos phere. Mrs. Wright Parker, Jr. and Miss Mary Parker volun teered to have the October meeting at their home. Mrs. Van Gilder and Mrs. Lloyd volunteered to make a thorough check of the altar linens in the sacristy in an ef fort to determine the extent of repairs needed. Before the close of the meeting, Father Burkort led a very interesting discussion dealing with the Mass. Many ideas were presented by the ladies for and against the Mass being said in English should this change take place in the future. MISS SANDRA KAYE WIL LIAMS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Boston W. Williams, of Savannah, graduated Sep- tember 9th from Mercy Hos pital School of Nursing, Springfield, Mass. Miss Williams graduated from St. Benedict's Elemen tary school and Saint Pius X High School in Savannah. She began work at Mercy Hospital, in Springfield, Sept ember 23rd. AUGUSTA - The Augusta Deanery, Council of Catholic Women held their fall luncheon meeting on Sunday, October 7 at the Elks Home on Green St. The luncheon was preceeded by mass at 11 o’clock at St. Mary’s on-the-Hill Church, with Rt. Rev. Msgr. John D. Toomey the celebrant. Msgr. Toomey of Savannah is the Spiritual Moderator for the Diocese. Miss Pauline Peuf- fier is the president of the Aug usta Deanery. The theme of the meeting was “Christian Unity.” The ladies were addressed by Chaplain (Capt.) Thomas F. Egan, Cath olic Chaplain of Ft. Gordon, speaking on the Ecumenical Council. The Augusta Deanery is com prised of Sacred Heart Church, Mrs. Richard Z. Craig, presi dent, St. Patrick’s, Mrs. Harry B. Arthur, president, St. Mary’s , Mrs. John Radeck, President, St. Joseph’s, Mrs. J. J. McCoy, president, all of Augusta. St. Patrick PCCW Plans Projects AUGUSTA - At the October meeting of St. Patrick's Par ish Council of Catholic Wom en, Mrs. Harry Arthur, Presi dent, announced that the Dio cesan Council would sponsor a tour to the Milledgeville State Hospital on October 25th, and asked all making the tour to! bring small gifts for the pat ients. The Milledgeville Coun cil will entertain with a tea following the tour. On October 24th, United Na tions Day, the Council will join in the prayers being said throughout the world for peace by having a “Round the Clock” Rosary. The hours of 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. were assigned the members. It was decided again this year to participate in the Ma- dona and Feed a Family plans. The former plan is for the care of mothers and infants, and the latter plan buys food in their own localities for the starving families in needy, countries. The members voted to join the Birthday Club at St. Mary’s Home in Savannah which is a plan whereby a girl from the home is remembered with gifts on her birthday and other spec ial occasions throughout the year. Miss Strange On Dean’s List MT. ST. JOSEPH, Ohio - Miss Charlotte Strangfe has been named to the Dean’s List of the College of Mount St. Jo-, seph on the Onio as a result of grades received for the sec ond semester of the 1961-1962 year. To be eligible a student must have a quality point average between 2.5 and 3. The daughter of Colonel and Mrs. Hubert E. Strange, 509 Baltzell Avenue, Fort Benning, Miss Strange has just completed her freshman year at the Ohio college where she is majoring in English. The College of Mount St. Jo seph opened its fall term on its entirely new nine-building campus, situated across Delhi Road from its present site, in suburban Cincinnati where it overlooks the Ohio river. The- 42-year old liberal arts Col lege is conducted by the Sis ters of Charity of Cincinnati.
