COLUMBUS DEANERY
MEETS AT DOUGLAS
DOUGLAS - The fall meet
ing of the Columbus Deanery
Council of Catholic women was
held at Douglas, Georgia, Wed
nesday, October 10th. The
President, Mrs. L. E. Mock,
Sr., requested that Rt. Rev.
Msgr. John D. Toomey, Spir
itual Moderator for the Diocese
of Savannah, lead the group in
the opening prayer.
A warm welcome was given
by Mrs. Edward Smith in be
half of the Douglas Council to
the visiting members and
clergy. Mrs. Johnny George,
Valdosta, responded for the out
of town delegations and expres
sed appreciation for the hos
pitality extended by the local
ladies.
Mrs. Richard G. Cowan, Re
cording Secretary, called the
roll and recorded the number
represented by each affiliate.
The reading of the minutes of
the last Deanery meeting was
dispensed with, and the finan
cial report was given by Mrs.
Phil Farkas, Treasurer.
The President then asked
each Deanery Committee
Chairman to give a brief out
line of the work of her Com
mittee for the coming year.
The Rev. Gerard Moran, pas
tor of the Douglas parish, in
troduced the guest speaker, the
Rev. Raymond Crowe, OMI, who
has just returned from Brazil
after six years as amissionary
there.
Fr. Crowe described various
phases of life in Latin Amer
ica, explaining that a political,
social and economic revolution
has been taking place there
since World War II. The in
dustrial revolution has been
partially responsible for bring
ing a large number of people
to live near the big cities - and
here poverty and deprivation
reign. Some progress has been
made by the missionaires, be
ginning with one school in 1957,
for 1330 children, gradually
helping to provide education,
food, clothing and, finally, med
ical and dental assistance.
Fr. Crowe emphasized that
Christianity must be applied
rather than discussed, and
prayer, penance and good works
are an obligation to our fellow
man.
Mrs. Martin Austin, Perry,
Ga. reviewed final plans for the
National Convention of the
Council of Catholic Women,
to be held November 3rd-7th,
this year in Detroit, Mich., and
urged any ladies who can to
attend.
Mrs. Mock announced the fol
lowing to serve as a Nominat
ing Committee: Mrs. L.A. Mal-
ony, Macon, Chairman; Mrs.
Eugenie Whiddon, Bainbridge;
Mrs. L. E. Mock, Jr., Albany.
These ladies will present a
slate of officers at the spring
meeting to be voted on at that
time.
Msgr. Toomey, in the ab
sence of his Excellency, Most
Rev. Thomas J. McDonough, ex
pressed the Bishop’s apprecia
tion for the spiritual bouquet
and prayers for the success of
The Ecumenical Council. Msgr.
Toomey stressed the need for
each individual within the Dean
ery to apply the principles of
renewed faith and action.
Mrs. J. B. Joncas, Presi
dent of St. Joseph’s Council,
Macon, then invited the Col
umbus Deanery CCW, to hold
it’s spring meeting in that City,
the date to be set later.

Fathers Won’t
Always Agree
VATICAN CITY, (Radio, NC)
- There can be many questions
on which the Fathers of the
ecumenical council do not agree
L’Osservatore Romano pointed
out in an editorial.
The Vatican City daily spoke
out following widespread press
speculation caused by the meet
ings of the various national
groups of bishops following the
first council session.
This speculation has included
theories of division among the
group of bishops and even of
a so-called “Revolt of the bish
ops’’ against the original means
of nominating candidates for
council posts.

VATICAN CITY, (Radio, NC)-
The Holy See will go on trying
to strengthen its contacts with
Orthodox Patriarch Athena-
goras of Constantinople (Istan
bul) in spite of his refusal to
send observers to the ecumen
ical council.
This was stated at a press
conference here (Oct. 17) by
Msgr. Jan G. M. Willebrands,
secretary of the Secretariat for
Promoting Christian Unity.
Msgr. Willebrands noted that
the Greek Orthodox bishops are
expected to reconsider their re
fusal to send observers in view
of the fact that the Russian
Orthodox Church has sent re
presentatives to the council.
(In Athens, it was announced
that the Holy Synod of the Greek
Orthodox Church was meeting to
set a date for an assembly of
all Greek Orthodox bishops to
discuss the question of sending
an observer to the council. Ear
lier, it had been announced that
the synod had declined to send
observers.)
If the Greeks decide to send
representatives, Msgr. Wille
brands said, then the Orthodox

School Policy Reversed
TRIVANDRUM, India, (NC) —
R. Sankar, new Chief Minister of

Sankar's predecessor, Pat-

effect barred the opening of
