He also said this was the first change in the Canon of the Roman ritual since the reign (590-604) of Pope Gregory the Great. The 18th general meeting closed when Bernard Cardinal Alfrink, who presided at the session, called for a standing vote on cloture of discussion of the last four chapters of the liturgical constitution. VATICAN CITY, NC - His Holiness Pope John XXIII has ordered that St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, be honored in Masses according to the Ro man Rite by having his name in cluded in the body of the Canon. The Pope’s decision was re vealed (Nov. 13) at the 18th general meeting of the Second Vatican Council. Amleto Car dinal Cicognani, president of the council’s Secretariat for Ex traordinary Affairs, who made the announcement, said the name of St. Joseph will first be included in the canon of the Mass of the feast of the Im maculate Conception, De cember 8. The name of St. Joseph is to be inserted following that of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Communicantes, the third pray er after the Sanctus, which voices the fellowship of Christ ians joining in offering the Eu charistic Sacrifice today with saints who have gone before them. Thus St. Joseph’s name will precede those of the apost les and a dozen early martyrs connected with the Church of Rome. Cardinal Cicognani said that Pope John decided to give St. Joseph the new honor to put it on record that the Second Vatican Council so honored its patron. It was not immediately clear whether the addition of St. Jo seph’s name to the Communi cantes prayer was being order ed for the Roman Rite alone or whether other Latin Rites would be affected. In the Roman Rite, the saints named after the apos tles begin with Linus, Cletus and Clement, who were the imme diate successors of St. Peter as Bishops of Rome. The list has remained substantially un changed since the sixth century. But in the Ambrosian Rite, used in Milan, the names of those saints and the ones follow ing them are replaced by a local list, beginning withSs. Hippoly- tus and Vincent. The Roman Rite is predominant throughout the Western Church, however. There is already a special Preface to the Canon which honors St. Joseph and which is sung or read in festal and vo tive Masses of St. Joseph. The Pope’s action did not come out of the blue. Over a year ago, it was revealed that a pe tition was being circulated in Italy and abroad asking that St. Joseph be given greater honor at Masses. The petition was said to have been signed by some 2ND SESSION OF COUNCIL MAY 12 - JUNE 29 VATICAN CITY. The petition asked that St. Joseph’s name be included in the Confiteor (the general con fession), the Suscipe Sancta Trinitas (Receive, O Holy Trinity), the Communicantes, and the Libera Nos (Deliver us) at the conclusion of the Lord’s Prayer. Cardinal Cicognani in his an nouncement did not mention the prayers other than the Com municantes. It was presumed that the whole question would be clarified by decrees expect ed from the Sacred Congrega tion of Rites. Bishop Flannelly In Hospital NEW YORK, (NC) - Auxil iary Bishop Joseph J. Atlanta CLARK COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS The Council shifted into a higher gear at the beginning of its 14th general meeting, largely because of the green light given council Fathers by Pope John to close debate with a vote. It took the council two weeks and a half to cover the first two chapters and the introduc tion of the project on the litur gy. But after the approval given for a cloture vote, they sped through the final six chapters of the project within a week. Key proposals in the council’s 14th through 18th general meet ings dealt with Extreme Unction, possible changes in the breviary and the importance of liturgical art. The 14th general session urged that the name of the sa crament of Extreme Unction be changed to the Anointing of the Sick because too many per sons associate the present name with the imminence of death. Council Fathers said the peo ple should be taught that the sacrament is not one of fear, but of comfort given for the heal ing of the body as well as for the purification of the soul. The importance of the Divine Office and breviary for the spiritual life of priests was stressed at the 15th and 16th general meetings. Although it was suggested that some changes be made in the breviary, the emphasis was mostly on the Divine Office as a most efficacious prayer and a great source of spiritual strength. Among suggested changes in the breviary were the language used, the composition of its parts, and the revision of cer tain lessons pertaining to the lives of the saints. The 17th general meeting dealt primarily with the litur gical year. The council press bulletin said there was much attention given to "the need for rewakening in the faithful re spect for holy days of obliga tion.’’ There were also sugges tions that Advent and Lent be restored to their original peni tential character, and that the liturgical rank of some saints’ days be reduced further in line with this purpose. The question of liturgical art was among the main points raised by speakers at the 18th general session. It was suggest ed that edicts dealing with Church art be enforced to pre vent or correct abuses in sa cred art, both in the exposition of new art and in the with drawing of old art from vene ration. The council press bulletin on this session said: "Contrary to what is sometimes stated, the splendor of artistic works and the solemnity of worship do not offend the poor and humble, who understand full well that one must offer the best of nature and the most beautiful products of art to God.” At the close of the 18th ses sion, Pope John implemented a suggestion made at the 12th general meeting: that the name of St. Joseph be inserted into the Canon of the Mass. The Pope’s decision was an nounced to the council Fathers (Nov. 13) by Amleto Cardinal Cicognani, Papal Secretary of State.
