For the greater glory of God and for the spiritual benefit of authors, publishers, reviewers and readers. - TASTE AND THE AUDIO VISUAL ARTS, by Victor M. Hamm, Marquette University Press, 1960, 8 pp. TELEVISION—THE DREAM AND THE REALITY, by Robert Shayon Marquette University Press, 1960, 17 pp. Reviewed by Charlotte K. Gafford. Originally, texts ofboththfese booklets were delivered as speeches on separate occasions to Milwaukee audiences. Mr. Hamm is a college teacher of English. Mr. Shayon is radio television critic and feature writer for the SATURDAY RE VIEW. Discussing television as a medium of art, Mr. Hamm rightly tosses the matter of television taste into the laps of television viewers. He avers that Addison’s definition of taste as “the power to discern artis tic excellence and to be de lighted by it” still holds true, as does what the Greeks used to say: the beautiful IS diffi cult. Mr. Hamm urges self-edu cation toward an informed stan dard of taste and calls particu lar attention to the co existence of ethics and aesthe tics in the arts of drama and fiction. It is true in television more than in any other art form that most questionable and suggestive situations are bad art, not only bad morals. They intrude on the home; they also intrude on the psychical dis tance necessary for enjoyment of art and dupe the viewer into a kind of shoddy keyhole- peeping. Mr. Shayon's message is as factual and inspirational as one might expect a message to be when a radio-television cri tic is co-sponsored by a Uni versity Press Club and a Coun ty Radio and Television Council. Unfortunately, in the arts and in communication media, hopes and dreams count for very little with an audience. What those of us who listen to the little trans istor or watch the portable box hear and see is a rather ap palling reality. THE MARONITE CATHOLIC RITE By Dr. Louis J. Rahill, Fran ciscan Herald Press, 156 pp., illus., $2.95. Reviewed by Flannery O’ Connor. The Catholic In America is a short history of anti-Cathol icism in this country. Fr. Ra hill confines himself to brief descriptions of the more ob vious events that exemplify Am erican anti-Catholicism and traces the gradual diminution of its vigor from Colonial times to the present. The book manag es to be interesting in spite of the fact that it is written in a sloppy journalistic style (at one point the grammar is incorrect) and is not adequate to the complexity of the sub ject. No mention is made of that Catholic parochialism which often incited bitter feel ings among non-Catholics. A good book can be written on anti-Catholicism in America but it would have to penetrate the subject to a greater depth than this one does. Admits Printing Spurious KC Oath PITTSBURGH, (NC) - A min ister who admitted he had print ed a false Knights of Columbus oath was acquitted of criminal libel in Crimial Court here but ordered to pay costs of prose cution. The Rev. Walter L. King, pastor of the Church of the Naz- arene at Finleyville, Pa., said he had printed the oath in May, 1960, during the last presiden tial election, with the intent of influencing people on how to vote. He said he printed the oath, which urged K. of C. members to religious bigotry, in a church pamphlet entitled “Voice of Nazarene’’ because he believed the oath to be au thentic. Asked by defence attorney Morris M. Berger what his opinion is now, the Rev. King replied:' “Upon listening to tes timony under oath I feel that it is not the (K. of C. ) oath.’’ Everything seems to go wrong for the fellow who is headed in the wrong direction. VISIT MCDONALD’S At 5220 Buford Hwy c TO CHRISTIAN PRAYERS THE BULLETIN, November 24, 1962—PAGE 7 Denies Luring Israeli Children Through Movies JERUSALEM, Israel, (NC) - A spokesman for the Latin Rite Patriarchate of Jerusalem has publicly denied charges that Catholic missionaries are luring Jewish children to spe cial movies on the Sabbath to proselytize them. Father M. J. Stiassny said in a letter published in the Jerusalem Post Weekly (Nov. 9) that there is “absolutely no foundation in fact’’ to charges that Jewish children in Jaffa were taught Christian prayers after special Saturday film shows. He attributed the char ges to what he called the “slan derous campaign which Karen Yaldenu is waging against Christian Churches in order to bring them into disrepute Yaldenu Our Child’s a private; movement Karen Fund is founded 1953 to insure a He brew education for every Jew ish child. It has long been in the forefront of publicity to the effect that Christian mission- ers are trying to wean Jewish Israeli children away from their religious heritage. In a letter published in the Post weekly right after Father Stiassny’s, M. E. Druck, a spokesman for the Israeli Re ligious Arrairs Ministry, in effect upheld the Karen Yald enu charges. Druck said that by showing movies to children on Saturdays, when other motion picture houses are closed, the missionary institutions in effect are "encouraging the children to desecrate the Sabbath. . .’’ Another letter, signed only “Public Relations Officer, Ka ren Yaldenu,” said of the priest’s letter: “As to the state ment about Christian prayers, we are not so naive as to believe these performances to be organized for ‘cultural’ pur poses. It is obvious that the missions have been founded for the dissemination of Christian teaching among Jews. . Father Stiassny in his letter recalled that in August of 1960, Bishop Pier GiorgioChiappero, Vicar General in Israel for the Latin Rite Patriarch, had re quested a public investigation of alleged missionary activity. Such an inquiry, said the priest, would "put an end to the false accusations leveled against the Catholic Church.” He said that “if this request was not compiled with, it is no fault of ours.” This unusual “Madonna of the Rosary” stolen from St. Mary’s Church in Weingar- ten, Germany, was returned along with several other val uable pieces after a $25,000 ransom was paid by a Ham burg magazine editor. The Madonna is a 16th century woodcarving by Tilman Rie- menschneider, a famous Ger man woodcarver. Henry Nan- nen, editor of Stern maga zine, negotiated with the thieves in person. (NC INDIA’S CARDINAL URGES GOVERNMENT SUPPORT IN CONFLICT WITH REDS BOMBAY, (NC)-India’s Car dinal has warned Catholics here to help now with money, clothes and gold in the fight against Chinese communist aggression so that they will not have “to give up their lives” later. Valerian Cardinal Gracias, Archbishop of Bombay, told a congregation at the procathe dral here (Nov. 4) that he did not want to “sound alarmist” but that he was being a “realist” in the present threat to India. He pledged the support of Catho lics in the government’s stand against Chinese attacks. Border clashes which have taken place between the Indians and the Chinese communists along their Himalayan frontier for several years erupted into a major armed conflict when the Chinese launched an offensive in October. India’s government has proclaimed a state of emer gency and asked the United States for arms. The Cardinal told the congre gation that he had a midnight audience with His Holiness Pope John XXIII shortly after reports of Chinese aggression had ap peared in the press. The Car dinal said that he told the Pope of the attacks and explained the background of the clashes. The two decided that the Cardinal should be in India during the crisis, and he flew here from Rome "to boost the morale of the people.” Cardinal Gracias said he de livered a personal message from the Pope to Prime Minis ter Jawaharlal Nehru during a 45-minute interview with the Indian leader. The message was sent in answer to Nehru’s ap peal for peace. The Archdiocese of Bombay has given 25,000 rupees $5,250) for the defense fund, the Cardi nal said. Cardinal Gracias said that a “miracle of unity” had come about overnight in the country. Rivalries gave away to a closing of ranks against the common foe, he add ed. Nearly 90 per cent of the world’s Christian countries are in sympathy with India, he said, and added that the Fathers at the Vatican council had expressed sympathy for the country. Thousands of Catholics took part in religious processions in the principal churches of Bombay to pray for peace. Auxiliary Bishop Longinus G. Pereira of Bombay issued a circular, before the return of Cardinal Gracias, to be read in all churches of the archdiocese asking prayer and sacrifice for the defense of the country and for peace. The circular also urged support for the National Defense Fund. Bishop Pereira is on the defense fund committee set up by the Chief Minister of the State of Maharashtra. India’s Catholic Bishops' Conference issued a joint pas toral from Rome urging that Catholics cooperate with the government “to the fullest ex tent and willingly accept all the hardships and sacrifices in volved in the present situation.” Bishop Stephen Ferrando, S.D.B., of Shillong and Bishop Orestes Marengo,S.D.B.,ofDi- brugarh left Rome with Cardi nal Gracias to return to their Sees, which are in the disputed area. John T. Caldwell, president of the association who is also chancellor of North Carolina StatO College, said: “Let us avoid the Church-State issue, or resolve it, or forget Federal aid. In any case, let us help get it off dead center.” Caldwell, speaking (Nov. 13) at the association’s annual meeting, said the controversy over Church-State relations has blocked Federal aid to higher education so far. The only way to guarantee that such legisla tion is enacted, he said, is for church school supporters “to retire magnanimously” from efforts to secure Federal assis tance for their institutions. However, he said, barring this, the question of the con- THANKSGIVING IN THE MISSIONS - This Thanksgiving Day, Americans can be grateful for a two-fold blessing: first, we thank God for our well-set tables, and second, from the peace of mind that comes from knowing our abundance is being shared by hungry children around the world. In urging that Federal aid to higher education legislation make provision for such a court test, he said the measure should at the same time make it clear that, whatever the courts deci ded about church schools, it would not jeopardize the aid given public institutions. Caldwell contended that "new, massive increments” of Federal money are “impera tive” at all levels of U. S. education. NATIONAL LEGION OF DECENCY 453 MADISON AVENUE, NEW YORK 22, N. Y.
