POPE URGES GENEROSITY TO
S. BISHOPS’ RELIEF FUND
(N. C. W. C. NEWS SERVICE)
NEW YORK, — His Holiness
Pope Pius XII has called “upon
the unflagging goodness and lib
erality” of American Catholics
for support of the 12th annual
Bishops’ Relief Fund to aid thou
sands of destitute persons
throughout the world.
The Pope’s appeal was made in
letter sent to members of the
U. S. Hierarchy. A copy of the
letter was released here by Cath
olic Relief Services — National
Catholic Welfare Conference,
orldwide relief and rehabilita
tion agency of the U. S. Bishops,
under whose auspices the relief
fund campaign is being con
ducted.
The goal of the campaign is a
minimum of five million dollars.
It will culminate on Laetare Sun
day, March 16, with a collection
to be taken up at all Masses in
some 16,300 parishes throughout
the nation.
The text of the Pope’s letter
follows:
As you prepare, Venerable
Brothers, to call once again upon
the vast generosity and untiring
Christian charity of your faith
ful flocks in favor of Our less
fortunate children throughout the
world, We willingly lend Our
voice to the urgent appeal you are
about to make. To the Holy See
there are daily addressed count
less requests for aid and relief,
and no one can visualize more
vividly than the Common Father
of all the continuing poverty and
need which afflict great and
growing numbers of men, women
and innocent children in every
clime.
For it would seem that, no
sooner is suffering soothed and
destitution relieved in one region,
than new, pressing, and perhaps
increased necessities arise else
where. To the disasters of fire,
flood, earthquake and famine
We sorrowfully see added the
consequence of war, which are
unfortunately still widespread
and persistent. Many of those
who, through no fault of their
own, are afflicted by these
scourges, turn to Us; and We can
depend only upon the unflagging
goodness and liberality of those
of Our children who have been
granted a greater abundance of
material goods and comforts.
“Being enriched in all things,”
We may say to you and your
faithful in the words of St. Paul:
“You may contribute with sim
plicity of purpose, and thus
through us evoke thanksgiving to
God; for the administration of
this service not only supplies the
want of the saints, but overflows
also in much gratitude to the
Lord.” (2 Cor. 9, 11-12). This, in
deed, will doubtless be the re
compense reserved by Divine
Providence for the increased
munificense of your self-sacrific
ing oblations: that as your dona-
ations supply the material needs
of your brethren, so their thank
ful prayers will invoke further
and richer blessings upon the
Church in the United States of
America, and upon each family
and individual contributing to
this necessary and most praise
worthy charity.
While emphasizing the unre
mitting urgency of your annual
appeal, Venerable Brothers, We
cannot omit the expression of
Our heartfeld and sincere grati
tude for the conspicuous assis
lance you and your diocesans
have given Us in past years. The
fruit of your sacrifices, offered to
the Vicar of Christ on earth, has,
as it were, been placed in the
very hands of Jesus to be dis
tributed by Him who went about
doing good (Acts 10,38); it has
eceived the blessing and the
touch of the Redeemer who had
compassion on the multitudes
(Mark 8,2) before going to bear
His pity and love to afflicted peo
ples, to all who labor and are
burdened, in every part of the
earth.
It is, then, in further testimony
of Our warmly appreciative
thankfulness, as well as to call
down copious divine graces upon
all who collaborate with you in
this admirable work of mercy,
that We impart from Our paternal
heart to you, to the zealous clergy,
fervent Religious and devoted
faithful of your various jurisdic
tions, Our loving apostolic bles
sing.

American Holy Ghost Father Frederic Trumbull of KiJema,
Tanganyika, Africa, and a native of Bridgeport, Conn., is
pictured offering Mass a bare 2,500 feet from the top of
Africa, a point at 17,000 feet, which has been called the
highest point at which Mass is known to have been offered.
Assisting Father Trumbull at the historic Mass, is Mr. John
Tunstall, leader of the British Kilimanjaro Expedition, a
convert, who invited the missioner to accompany the climb
to Kilimanjaro’s summit. Bottom photo shows Mawenzi
peak, of Mt. Kilimanjaro, as seen from altar where Mass
was said. Air was too thin for Mass to be offered at th»
summit, 19,500 feet above sea level. (NC Photos)^
