FATHER QUINLAN’S JUBILEE
History was made in the Diocese of Savannah dur
ing the past month when Father William Quinlan,
chaplain at the Sacred Heart Seminary of Sharon,
Ga., observed the Fiftieth Anniversary of his Holy
Ordination.
Father Quinlan has the distinction of being the
first priest ordained in this Diocese to live to celebrate
his Golden Jubilee.
He was born in Cork, Ireland; continued his edu
cation in America; graduated from St. Mary’s Sem
inary in Baltimore in 1871, and was ordained on
January 8th, of that year in Augusta by Rt. Rev.
Ignatius Persico, fourth bishop of Georgia.
His first assignment was at the Church of the Im
maculate Conception at Atlanta, the oldest Catholic
Church in the capital. After a few years there he
went to St. Patrick’s Church in Savannah, where he
labored for 27 years, or until 1907, when he returned
to Atlanta as assistant pastor of the Church where
he spent the days of his early priesthood. Subse
quently he was transferred to the Albany Missions,
and then made chaplain at Sharon.
