ST. PATRICK’S CHURCH, AUGUSTA, GA.
The cornerstone of St. Patrick’s Church at Augus
ta was laid July 19, 1857, but the history of the
parish that is now St. Patrick’s brings us back more
than a century.
The first Mass in Augusta was celebrated early
in the nineteenth century in the house of a Mr. Big-
non, on Broad Street, below Monument, by the Abbe
Carl, whom the Revolution had driven out of France.
He was sent to Savannah by Bishop Carroll. Church
records at St. Patrick’s show statistics of births and
marriages as early as 1807.
In 1810, a charter of incorporation was obtained
from the legislature, and, at a meeting of the Catho
