R.B. Arthur Retires After
Serving Two Terms
AUGUSTA, Ga.—Dr. John E. Mar
riott was elected grand knight of
Patrick Walsh Council at the an
nual election; he succeeds Robert B.
Arthur, who retires after filling the
office in effective manner for two
terms. Dr. Marriott, who is a promi
nent local dentist, has been deputy-
grand knight. Lecturer Thomas P.
Danahey was elected deputy grand
knight; John T. Buckley chancellor;
E. J. O'Connor, treasurer; J. P. Price,
warden; M. J. Lyons, trustee; Law
rence Ward, recording secretary; C.
C. Stulb, advocate; J. J. Conlin. in
side guard; F| J. Sherman, outside
guard.
During the past year the Knights
of Columbus Home has been reno
vated inside and out and is perhaps
the finest fraternal order home in
this section, a stately colonial home
on a desirable site on Greene Street,
considered one of the" most beauti
ful streets in the entire South.

Election of officers for the coming
year takes place in he various coun
cils of this section during the present

elections which reach The Bulletin
by that time.
Delegates from the Southeast in
attendance at the supreme conven
tion in Milwaukee report that the
gathering was one of the finest held
thus far. Each state in this sec
tion was represented by its state dep
uty and past state deputy. Supreme
Director P. H. Rice of Georgia also
attended, as did Andrew A. Baum-
stark, Atlanta, master of the Fourth
Degree for Georgia and the Caroli-
nas.
JACKSONVILLE SCHOOLS
OPENED SEPTEMBER 9
CHARLESTON, S. C. — Members
of P. N. Lynch Council Knights of
Coumbus, marched in a body to the
t home of the late Mrs. Rahall Kerr
j and said the rosary there fo. the re
pose of the deceased, who was the
mother of Basil Kerr, grand Knight
of the Council. Mrs. Kerr was one
of the oldest members of St. Patrick's
Church.

September 9 with a record enroll
ment The school goes from' the kin
dergarten through the eleventh grade
for both boys and girls.
The school at the Church of the
Assumption of South Jacksonville
with classes from the kindergarten
through the ninth grade, opened Sep
tember 9 with Mass celebration by
Rev. M. F. Monahan, pastor.

ons, pastor also conducted by the
Sisters of St. Joseph, and St. Joseph's
School at Loretto, Rev. M. Fennell,
pastor, also opened auspiciously.
CHARLESTON, S. C. — James F.
! Condon, past grand knight of P. N.
Lynch Council, was honored at Sul-
livan"s Island by his friends on the
occasion recently of his seventy-
second birthday. Mr. Condon, who
is president of Jas. F. Condon and
Sons, shared honors with his twin
brother, William J. Condon, Sister
Fidelis of the Ursuline Nuns at Col
umbia is a sister of Mrs. James F.
Condon.

MOBILE, Ala.—Friends of James
H. Glennon, past state deputy of the
Alabama State Council, Knights of
Columbus, extend their sympathy to
him on the death of his sister, Mrs.
McDonnell who died recently in this
city. Mrs. McDonnell, whose hus
band died only last year, she leaves
seven sons, rangir.^ in age from ten
to twenty-four years.

SAVVANNAH, Ga. — Savannah’s
Catholic scools open here with every
prospect of a most successful year.
The Benedictine School and St. Vin
cent Academy .offering high school
courses for boys’and girls respective
ly, anticipate record enrollments, and
a similiar situation exists at Marist
School, Sacred Heart School and St.
Benedict’s.
The Benedictine enrollment, limit
ed to 150, has been completed. The
members of the faculty, announced

of Chicago Dead
Noted Jurist, Termed “Chi
cago’s Best Mayor,” De

CHICAGO — William Emmett Dev
er, former Mayor of Chicago, died
here September .3, death due to can
cer.
Mr. Dever died as he lay on a
couch in the living room of his home.
His immediate family was present,,
including Mrs. Dever their two adopt
ed sons. Daniel H. and George E.
Dever, and two nieces, Mrs. Rose
Newman and Mrs. Margaret McCaf-
ferty.
Earlier in the day he received a
call from Rev Alexander Thane, of
St. Ita’s Parish, who administered
the Last Sacrement.
Mr. Dever was born at Cummins-
ville, Mass., March 13, 1862. He was
the son of Patrick J. and Mary
Lynch Dever. Pfior to becoming
Mayor of Chicago he jvas a distin
guished jurist.
His mayoralty term was served
from 1923 to 1927 and was so effec
tive that he has been called the ’’best
Mayor Chicago ever had." Against
his wish he ran for re-election but
was defeated by William Hale
Thompson, whom he had succeeded
four years previously.

Manus, deputy grand knight of Sa
vannah Council, Knights of Colum
bus, for the past two years, was elect
ed grand knight at the annual elec
tion meeting here early in Septem
ber. Mr. McManus succeeds Nicho
las A. Stafford, who retires after
two successful terms of office and
who is now state deputy of the order
in Georgia.
James F. Glass was chosen deputy
grand knight; John G. Heagarty,
chancellor; A. R. Winkers, recording
secretary; James B. McDonald, finan
cial secretary; Hugh A. Grady, treas
urer; Thomas G. Canty, warden;
Frank T. Wall, Jr., advocate; James
G. Nueslein, inner guard; Edward P.
Daley, and Ira J. Ryan, outer guards;
William F. McKay, trustee for three
years.
A committee consisting of W. F.
McKay, chairman, A. J. Pomar, L. C.
Matthews, Joseph D. Sheehan and
James F. Glass was appointed to
make arrangements for the proper
observance of Columbus Day.
