S A V A N N A H, Ga. — Joseph A.
Cronk, for nearly a third of a cen
tury a member and secretary of the
Board of Bar Examiners of Georgia,
died here May 18, after an extended
illness. Mr. Cronk was one of the
most esteemed members of the Sa
vannah Bar; he was reappointed a
member of the State Board of Bar
examiners January 1, 1331, by the
justices of the Supreme Court of
Georgia for a term of six years; he
had already served 32 years. He serv
ed on the board with many distin
guished Georgians, including Hon.
Joseph R. Lamar, later a member of
the Supreme Court of the United
States, and with Georgia Governors
and U. S. Senators; there are three
members of the board.
Mr. Cronk was bom in Savannah
80 years ago, and is survived by his
brother, Robert E. Cronk, Jackson
ville, and by several nephews and
nieces. Mr. Cronk was a member of
the Cathedral parish, from which his
funeral was held, with interment in
Cathedral Cemetery. Men prominent
in the business and professional life
of Savannah and Georgia were pall-
bearers
MRS, MARY SPELLMAN OF
SAVANNAH PARISH DIES
Mrs. Mary Spellman, wife of James
A. Spellman, died here May 22 after
a long period of ill health. Mrs.
Spellman was a native of Savannah
and a widely known member of
Cathedral with a Requiem Mass. In
terment was in Cathedral Cemetery.
Surviving beside her husband are
her daughter, Miss Margaret Spell
man, her son, James A. Spellman,
Jr., her sister, Miss Lillie Sullivan,
and her brother, J. F. Sullivan, all
of Savannah.

Bishop Keyes Confirms at
Augusta, Atlanta, Rome

ATLANTA, Ga. — The Most Rev.
Michael J. Keyes, D. D., Bishop of
Savannah, ended his Confirmation
visitations for the year May 28 and
29; on the former date Bishop Keyes
confirmed .classes at St. Anthony’s,
Sacred Heart and Our Lady of
Lourdes Churches, then going to
Rome for Confirmation at St. Mary’s
the day following.
On the Sunday previous Bishop
Keyes confirmed classes in all the
Augusta churches, Sacred Heart, St.
Fatrick’s, St. Mary’s-on-thc-Hill and
Immaculate Conception. The Sacra
ment was administered earlier in th:
month at St. Joseph's and St. Peter
Claver’s Church, Macon, Sacred
Heart Church, Milledgeville, St.
Theresa’s Church, Albany, Sacred
Heart Church, Griffin, and at Val
dosta, Thomasville and Americus. In
April there was Confirmation at Holy
Family Church, Columbus, at Fort
Benning, St. Francis Xavier Church,
Brunswick, St. Michael’s Church,
Gainesville and St. Joseph’s Church,
Athens.
Summer Sessions in
90 Catholic Colleges

V/ASHINGTON, D. C. — Ninety
Catholic universities, college and nor
mal schools will conduct summer
sessions this year according to infor
mation received by the Department
of Education, National Catholic Wel
fare Conference. The total attend
ance is expected to approximate 20,-
COO students.
Twenty-two of the institutions list
ed are for members of their own re
ligious orders only.
Some of the summer schools will
open as early as June 5, but the ma
jority will begin their sessions later
in June and close the first or second
week in August. Many will conduct
courses over a period of six weeks,
while others will offer courses nine
weeks in length.
