(Special to The Bulletin)
ROME, Ga—The Church and Gal
ileo has been the subject of a dis
cussion started by a Nashville evan
gelist in a radio talk, whose asser
tion that Galileo was imprisoned by
the Church for ridiculing those who
refused to accept the Copemican the
ory was answered in the Rome News-
Tribune by Louis J. Maloof. The Rev.
H. Grady Slatton, pastor of the
Church of Christ, then referred Mr.
Maloof to the Encyclopedia Britan-
nica for proof that the Church im
prisoned Galileo, and Mr. Maloof re
plied by quoting from the Encyclo
pedia Brittanica the statement that
the responsibility for the detaining of
Galileo “rests with a disciplinary con
gregation in no sense representing the
Church, was never confirmed by the
Pope and was virtually repealed in
1757, under Pope Benedict XIV.” Fur
thermore, the Encyelopdeia to which
the minister referred Mr. Maloof is
shown by him to state that Galileo
was detained “in the palace of the
Inquisition, where he occupied the
best apartments and was treated with
unparralled indulgence.”
