SCOUT CONFERENCE

KANSAS CITY—Of four principal
speakers at the convention banquet of
the twenty-third annual National
Council Meeting of the Boy Scouts
of America held in Convention Hall,
here, two were internationally noted
Catholic leaders.
The Most Rev. Francis C. Kelley,
Bishop of Oklahoma City and Tulsa,
Chairman of the Catholic Committee
on Scouting and member of the Na
tional Scout Council, delivered the
first address of the evening. He spoke
on “Our Times and the Churches.”
The Silver Buffalo Award, given
by the Boy Scouts in recognition for
some outstanding work on behalf of
i boys was given to six men, among
them Martin H. Carmody, Supreme
Knight of the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Carmcdy delivered the address of
response on behalf of this group.
The Most Rev. Thomas F. Lillis,
Bishop of Kansas City, was one of the
speakers at the sessions of the Scouts’
National Council. He also delivered
the invocation at the annual luncheon
at noon yesterday. Several priests, as
well as Catholic Scout leaders from
various sections of the country, at
tended the luncheon.
The banquet was attended by more
than 1,000 persons, including a good
percentage of Catholics. The repre
sentation of Knights of Columbus was
especially notable. Several local
councils had entire tables and other
delegations came from surrounding
towns. Supreme . Director Michael
Healy, of Topeka, attended.
At the speakers’ table were Bishop
Lillis, Bishop Kelley of Oklahoma, Mr.
Carmody and Dr. Thomas E. Purcell,
National President of the National
Council of Catholic Men.
ELEVEN CHINESE PRIESTS have
been lately ordained for the Shheut
Missions of the Mongolian border.
This brings to 63 the total of priests
graduated from the central semi
nary at Tatung, the first of its kind
in China. The enrollment next year
will be over 80.
NEW ASSIGNMENTS FOR
FOUR MARIST FATHERS
ATLANTA, Ga.—Very Reverend M.
A. Cotter, S.M., formerly pastor of
the S'acred Heart Church, in Atlanta,
has been named pastor of St. Mich
ael’s Church, Wheeling, West Vir
ginia.
Announcement has also been made
of the transfer of Rev. Joseph Daug-
elzer, S.M., and Rev. John Emmerth,
S.M., to Washington, D. C.
Rev. William Hanlon, S.M., has
been appointed assistant at the Sa
cred Heart Church, Atlanta.
PEGG-MALONE—Characterized by
dignity the marriage of Miss Frances
Pearl Pegg, of Wilkesboro, N. C., and
Anthony John McGlone, was perform
ed by Rev. Joseph E. Mcylan, of Im
maculate Conception Church, at the
home of the bridegroom’s parents, on
August 29.
Mrs. McGlone is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Pegg, of Wilkes
boro, and a graduate of the Georgia
Baptist Hospital School of Nursing.
Mr. McGlone, the elder son of Mr.
and Mrs. Peter McGlone, of Atlanta,
is connected with the Chevrolet Mo
tor Company, in this city.
CORRIGAN - CARR—In the presence
of their immediate families, Miss
Marion Corrigan and Dr. Henry Par
dee Carr, of Milledgeville, were unit
ed in marriage at the rectory of the
Sacred Heart Church, on August 23,
Rev. Edward P. McGrath, S. M., of
ficiating.
Dr. Carr and his bride are mem
bers of prominent Georgia families.
The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Jo
seph Michael Corrigan, of Atlanta,
and the bridegroom is the son of Mr.
Arthur J. Carr and the late Mrs.
Carr, of Milledgeville. He is a mem
ber of the field staff of the interna
tional health division of the Rocke
feller Foundation, and for the past six
years has been stationed in Mexico.

OF SAIN*T FRANCIS
Mrs. Mollie Sheehan Moran was
admitted to membership in the Third
Order of St. Francis, a lay organi
zation, after her profession at the
Franciscan Monastery in Washington,
D. C.
Mrs. Moran, who took the name of
Sister Cornelia, is the sister of Mrs.
Joseph N. Moody, Mrs. James A.
Branch, Mrs. E. W. Moore and C. J.
Moran, of Atlanta, and of Mrs. C. W.
Kress, of New York, and Mrs. Leo
nora S. Raines, of Washington.

“Revivals”
Held in Oklahoma

BRISTOW, Oklahoma.—An innova
tion in the presentation of Catholic
doctrine is found in the method adop
ted by The Catholic Evidence Guild,
of Bristol, under whose auspices Rev.
Stephen A. Leven, Moderator, held
a “Revival” recently.
Despite the fact that there is but
one Catholic family in the district,
the meetings were attended by several
hundred interested auditors.
The reception given the venture by
the non-Catholics of the locality was
most enheartening. Two Protestant
ministers who had been holding week
ly services in the school house where
the “revival” was held, cancelled
their meetings and urged members

Other districts, some of them with
no Catholic . inhabitants whatever,
have extended invitations to Father
Leven, and additional meetings are
being arranged.
Assisted by several laymen, Father
Leven has been delivering lectures
upon street comers in Bristow and
nearby towns.

JOHN MORRIS, SR., one of At
lanta’s most prominent pioneer mer
chants, and former head of the Keely
Company, passed away on September
6, at the age of 78 years.
Funeral services were held from
the Sacred Heart Church, with a Re
quiem Mass.
Born in County Kerry, Ireland, Mr.
Morris came to America in his youth,
entering the mercantile business in
New York. He came to Atlanta when
Georgia’s capital city was a small
town, to associate in the dry goods
business with John Ryan.
In 1880 he married Miss Mary
O’Neill, of Atlanta, who died in 1919.
In 1927, Mr. Morris married Mrs. Em-
mar Garrett Boyd, who survives him.
He is also survived by seven chil
dren,- John Morris, Jr., Frank Morris,
Robert J. Mcrrie, of Atlanta; Rev.
Joseph A. Morris of Chicago: Miss
Mary Morris, Mrs. Richard E. Trippe,
and Mrs. Patrick Dinkins, of Atlanta.
NATIVE CHINESE GIRLS
WILL ENTER NOVITIATE
KONGMOON, CHINA—Chinese as
pirants to the native Siserhood found
ed by Bishop Walsh, of Kongmoon,
South China, will be received into the
novitate in October. These young
girls have been training since 1927
under Maryknoll Sisters, first in
Hong Kong and later at Kongmoon.
Added to the canonical course of
training in the spiritual life, the as
pirants are given a measure of ordi
nary education in preparation for
their later work among their own
people. They are finished off as teach
ers, medical nurses, and industrial
school instructors-

Newark Marriage of Interest

MIAMI BEACH, Fla.—Mrs. Emilie
Duffield announces the marriage of
her daughter, Nancye, to James A.
Nelligant, of New York City, which
was recently solemnized in St.Bridg-
et’s Church, at Newark, New Jersev
Both young people have a wide cir
cle of friends in the Greater Miami
area as both were members of the
choir of the Church of the Little
Flower, in Coral Gables, and Gesu
Choir in Miami. After a wedding trip
the couple will make their home on
High Street, Newark, N. J.
REV. RALPH E. UNDERWOOD,
recently ordained, has been appoint
ed by the Bishop of Northampton,
England, to take charge at Brigstock,
where he was formerly Angelican
vicar. He was. received, into, the
Catholic Church four years ago.
Among his congregation are some
former Angelicans who followed his
example by becoming Catholics.
Father Robert V. Glennie,, who has
just been ordained priest, at London,
worked with Father Wood when
they were both Angelican clcrgq-
meu.
