SISTER MARCELLINA GOLDEN JUBfLARIAN Sister of Mercy, Native of Charleston, Honored at Aiken Convent (Special to The Bulletin) AIKEN, S. C.—The Rev. Sister M. Marcellina, for fifty years a member of the Sisters of Mercy of the Diocese of Charleston, observed the Golden Jubilee of her profession January 6 at St. Angela Academy, the jubilee program starting with a High Mass in the Convent Chapel, with the rev. George J. Dietz pastor of the Church of Our Lady, Help of Christians, as celebrant. The high school students at the convent sang the Mass. On the Feast of the Epiphany, 1884, Sister M. Marcellina entered the Community of the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy in the diocese of Charleston, to assume the duties of Religion. Entering the service of the Master during the Christmas season when the choirs of earth echo their most harmonious music, their great est hymns of praise, Sister M. Mar cellina seems never to have lost file musical spirit of Christmas. Service to the Church, through music, has been her life work. From organ and choir, many of her finished students sound the praises of the Creator. For fifty years, she has led student after student onward in the mastery of the piano keyboard and continues daily to instruct her class in music. How ever, this has not been her only ser vice. In addition to a life of daily prayer, she has held responsible posi tions as Procuratrix, treasurer, and Mother Assistant of the Community, as well as Superior of the Sumter mission. Sister M. Marcellina claims the dis tinction of being a native Charleston ian, her parents having settled in that city in the early sixties. Her ele mentary education was obtained in Charleston with the Sisters of the Community, which she entered later. Upon the completion of her studies at St. Elizabeth’s Academy, Middle- town, Conn., at the age of eighteen, she hastened to return to her native city to become a Sister of Mercy. Many friends in Aiken called at St. Angela Academy, where Sister M. Marcellina Hhs taught for the past four years, to extend congratulations and best wishes to her. At 3:30 p. m., Benediction of the Most Blessed Sacrament was given by Father Dietz. “Adore Te Devote” and “Tantum Ergo” Gregorian Chant) were the musical selections. At 4 p. m. a program was presented in the parlors. Various recitations, choruses, and piano selections ren dered by the students filled the af ternoon hours with pleasure and brought to a close a day filled with good wishes for the venerable jubil- arian.
