WASHINGTON. — At ceremonies
held at the National Catholic School
of Social Service, yesterday, Miss
Agnes G. Regan, Executive Secretary
of the National Council of Catholic
Women was presented with the Cross
Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice awarded to
her by His Holiness Pope Pius XI
in recognition of her services to the
school and to the N. C. C. W. The
presentation was made by His Excel
lency the Most Rev. Amleto Giovanni
Cicognani, Apostolic Delegate to the
United States.
Also present at the ceremonies were
the Very Rev. Dr. John J. Burke,
C. S. P., General Secretary of the
National Catholic Welfare Confemce;
the Rev. Dr .Francis J. Haas, Direc
tor of the Social Service School; the
Rev. Michael J. Ready, Assistant
General Secretary of the N. C. W. C.,
and the Rev. Dr. Thomas J. Kilfoil,
Secretary of the Apostolic Delegation.
The Papal Delegate celebrated Mass
in the school chapel and, at the pre
sentation ceremony, congratulated
Miss Regan, saying that the Cross
which wa presented to her was typi
cal of the sacrifices she had made in
her work for the lay apostolate.
During Miss Regan’s tenure of of
fice. the National Council of Catho
lic Women has expanded rapidly un
til it now has affiliated diocesan
councils in 57 Sees. She was ap
pointed to the office of executive sec
retary in 1920.
Born in San Francisco, she has held
many prominent positions in the edu
cational field. Since 1923, she has
served as assistant director of the
Social Service School.
Two of Miss Regan’s sisters she
was one of nine children—chose reli
gious life. Four of Miss Regan’s
nieces are nuns and a nephew has
entered the Jesuit Order and is
studying for the priesthood.
Miss Regan received her early edu
cation at St. Rose’s Academy in San
Francisco. Later she entered the San
Francisco Normal School and, upon
being graduated, began her career as
an educator. She taught in the ele
mentary grades of the public schools
for a time and then served for a num
ber of years as principal. Because of
her deep interest in social and civic
affairs, she was appointed a member
of the Municipal Playground Com
mission. She also served for seven
years as a member of the San Fran
cisco Board of Education.
