The Athens branch of the Catholic
Laymen’s Association of Georgia was
organized a decade ago, in the days
of the pastorate of Father H. F.
Clark, and has continued in exist
ence since that time. M. F. Costa is
now president, Mrs. H. B. Heywood,
vice-president, and Mrs. W. E. Hynes,
secretary. Past presidents include
Dr. T. H. McHatton head of the De
partment of Horticulture of the Uni
versity of Georgia; Mrs. Hynes, Dr.
Carey and R. H. Johnston.
Mr. Costa, who now heads the
Athens branch, is one of the leading
business men, not only of Athens,
but of the entire northeastern section
of Georgia. He is active in the vari
ous civic and business organizations
of the city; Costa’s, in which the
other members of his family are as
sociated with him. is an Athens and
University of Georgia institution.
MRS HYNES PRESIDENT
OF ALTAR SOCIETY
Mrs. W. E. Hynes is president of
the Altar Society of St. Joseph’s par
ish, Mrs. Lawrence Costa, vice-pres
ident. and Mrs. Randall Freeman,
secretary and treasurer. The Altar
Society has been particularly active
and the fruits of its efforts are con-
tinously evident in the very devo
tional parish church.

NEWMAN CLUB PRESIDENT
The Newman Club of the Univer
sity of Georgia, organized by Father
King, is headed by Bernard Frank
lin, of Augusta, with Alexander Gal
lo, of New York City vice-president,
and John M. Harrison, Jr. Atlanta,
secretary and treasurer. Father King
is chaplain of the Newman Club or
ganization composed of the clubs
from the colleges of the Southeast.
