Mrs. Jas. E. Kelly
As President of the Catholic
Woman’s Club There

SAVANNAH, Ga.—Mrs. Joseph E.
Kelly was re-elected president of the
Catholic Woman’s Club of Savannah
at the annual meeting held May 8.
Miss Helen Roe Nugent was elected
vice-president, Mrs. John S. Robert
son, Jr., second vice-president, Mrs.
Charles F. Pritchard, third vice-pres
ident, Miss Jennie King, recording
secretary, Miss Winifred Quinan, cor
responding secretary and Miss Eliza
beth Moriarty, treasurer. Members
of the executive board are Miss
Nellie T. Walsh, Mrs. Elizabeth Ris
er, Mrs. James Henderson, Mrs.
Charles Peterson and Mrs. Henry
Heller. Mrs. Thomas F. Walsh. Jr.,
was chairman of the nominating
committee.
POLISH AMBASSADOR
VISITOR IN SAVANNAH
Hon. Stanislaus Patek, Polish Am
bassador to the United States and
JPolish Minister to Cuba, visited Sa-
wannah recently on his way to Wash
ington from Havana where he had
presented his credentials to the Pres
ident of Cuba. Ambassador Patek was
particularly interested in monuments
to Pulaski here. His visit was un
scheduled; he was passing through
with his party by automobile. Am
bassador Patek was formerly Polish
minister to Japan and to Soviet Rus
sia.

Funeral of Joseph B.
Lyons in Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga.—The funeral of
Joseph B. Lyons, son of the late John
Lyons, Sr., and Mrs. Mary O’Connor
Lyons, who died in New York, May
2, was held from the Cathedral of St.
John the Baptist, with interment in
Cathedral Cemetery. Mr. Lyons was a
member of one of Savannah’s leading
Catholic families, and he was also
widely known here.
Neil Gildea, 80, of
Savannah Parish Dies
The funeral of Neil Gildea, one of
the oldest as well as one of the best
known Catholics in Savannah, died
here early in May at the age of 80.
Bom in Donegal, Ireland, he had liv
ed in Savannah 50 years; he was ill
but four weeks before his death.
Years ago he operated the old Alham
bra Music Hall.
The funeral was held from the
Church of the Blessed Sacrament
with a Requiem Mass. Interment was
in Cathedral Cemetery." Pallbearers
were Col. Sheftall B. Coleman, James
T. McKenna, Edward Lyons, George
Cleary, Henry Cramer, and C. G.
Flynn. Surviving Mr. Gildea are four
daughters, Miss Mary Gildea, Mrs.
John Fischer, Miss Florence Gildea,
and Miss Elizabeth Gildea, Savan
nah; five sons, Edward Gildea, New
York, Joseph Gildea, Francis J. Gil
dea, Benjamin J. Gildea and James
F. Gildea, Savannah; a sister, Mrs.
Catherine O’Brien, Philadelphia, and
five grandchildren.
J.J. MURPHY, LEADING
POLICE OFFICIAL, DIES

SAVANNAH, Ga.-John J. Mur
phy, former chief of detectives for
the city of Savannah and recently
special criminal bailiff in tire solici
tor general’s office died here at the
age of 68, after a short illnss. Mr.
Murphy was bom in Liverpool, Eng
land, and came to the United States
when he was a young man. He was
appointed to the Savannah Police De
partment by the then Mayor Peter
W. Meldrim in 1897, and advanced
through the various ranks until his
retirement on pension in 1923.
Surviving Mr. Murphy are his
widow, Mrs. Sarah Brennan Murphy;
four sons, Edward A. Murphy, New
York; John J., Daniel A and Michael
H Murphy, Savannah; two daugh
ters; Mrs. Arthur Dowling, Savan
nah, and Mrs. Margaret Bentz. Phila
delphia; a brother, Patrick Murphy,
Raleigh, N. C., two sisters," Mrs. Row
land Savage and Mrs. John Reilly,
Philadelphia, and four grandchildren.
The funeral was held from Sacred
Heart Church, of which he was a
member, with interment in Cathe
dral Cemetery.
MRS. MARY FITZPATRICK
OF SAVANNAH PARISH DIES
Mrs. Mary C. Fitzpatrick, widow of
of John J. Fitzpatrick, died here early
in April, after an illness of four
months. Mrs. Fitzpatrick , was bom
in Augusta and had lived in Savan
nah most of her life. Surviving are
three sons, Henry F. Fitzpatrick,
Lynchburg, Va„ and P E. and John
F. Fitzpatrick, Savannah; a daugh
ter, Mrs. Harold J. Monson, Savan
nah; six grandchildren; a brother,
James Hoctor, Augusta, and a cousin,
Sister Mary Catherine, Savannah.
The funeral was held from the Cathe
dral with a Requiem Mass; interment
was in Cathedral Cemetery. The
Ladies Auxiliary, A. O. H., of which
Mrs. Fitzpatrick was a member, at
tended the funeral in a body.
FUNERAL OF MRS MARGARET
TURNER HELD IN SAVANNAH
The funeral of Mrs. Margaret Tur
ner, widow of Jclm A. Turner, who
died in April, was held from Sacred
Heart Church, the Very Rev. Boni
face Bauer, O. S. B., pastor, officiat
ing. Interment was in Laurel Grove
Cemetery.

was held May 9 from Sacred Heart
Church, with interment in Bonaven-
ture Cemetery.

PAUL HELD IN SAVANNAH
The funeral of Mrs. Jane Egan
Paul, wife of Sylvester Paul, for
merly of Savannah, who died in Mi
ami, was held from St. Patrick’s
Church with a Requiem Mass. In
terment was in Cathedral Cemetery.
Mrs. Paul was ill but a short time
before she died. Surviving in addi
tion to her husband are two daugh
ters. the Misses Betty and Bernice
Paul; a son, Vincent Paul, Miami;
her mother, Mrs. Mary Egan; two sis
ters, Mrs. W. H. Boyd and Mrs. G. A.
Lohse, and a brother, William F.
Egan, Savannah.

MRS. CATHERINE GAINEY OF
SAVANNAH PARISH IS DEAD
Mrs. Catherine Gainey, wife of
Mi"hael J. Gainey, a native of Count'’
Armagh, Ireland, and a resident of
Savannah for forty years, died here
early in May after a short illness.
Surviving Mrs. Gainey in addition
to her husband are a son, Michael j.
Gainey, Jr., Savannah; two sisters in
Australia, a nephew in Ireland and
a niece, Mrs. J. D. Cromley, Savan
nah.
LITTLE SISTERS OF POOR
REMEMBERED IN WILL
The Little Sisters of the Poor are to
receive the balance of the estate of
the late John Gerald Pepper, who
died in New Orleans in April, and
whose funeral was held from the
Cathedral here. The will bf Mr. Pep
per, who was a member of a leading
Savannah family, makes a number
of specific bequests.
