VIENNA. — Eyes glistening with
tears, faces stamped with the im
press of deep emotion—such have
characterized the throngs, who. for
the past few weeks, have been issu
ing from the Josefstadtertheater here
'ollowing the performances given
there. For what they have seen with
in has gripped the heart of Vienna
as a whole and stirred even those
who have been away from church
and religion for years—"Die Erste
Legion - ’ the drama on the Jesuits,
written by an American playwright.
Duplicating its American triumphs.
Emmet Lavery’s “The First Legion”
has been witnessed by Austrians
here in more than 30 performances
and the reaction has been extraordi
nary. Adapted for the German stage
by the American Catholic author
Friedrich Schreyvogel, it not only
brings before the Austrian public
some of the most famous German ac
tors but a theme the power of which
has been manifested in its effect on
’hose who have seen the production.
That theme is the power of faith in
God.

Father John Barry, later Bishop of
Savannah, visited Asheville in 1840
and said Mass for the few Catholics
there; this is believed to be the first
recorded visit of a Catholic priest
there In 1866 Father J. J. O’Connell
said Mass on the summit of Mount
Mitchell, and two years later the
then Bishop Gibbons made his way
by stage and horseback to the city,
then a little mountain village-
The future Cardinal acquired sev
ere 1 acres of land in the city for a
moderate sum. and the fund raised
locally for the proposed church was
supplemented by money solicited
abroad by Father L. P. O’Connell and
Father J. J. O’Connell. Bishop Gib-
bc named the church for St- Law
rence. the patron saint of Father
Lawrence O’Connell. Traveling mis
sionaries served the church, until the
appointment of Father J. B White as
first resident pastor in 1887. Father
White acquired the present property
and built a new church and rectory.
St. Lawrence’s has been served
since as pastors by the famed Marion
brothers, Monsignor Peter G. Mar
ion and pi -nor Patrick Marion,
and by the present able pastor. Fa-
‘her Louis J. Bour, M. A., Ph L. Fa
ther Bour is a native of Scranton, and
was- educated there, at St. Francis
College, Cincinnati and the Catholic
University of America, Washington,
D. C., from which he received his
graduate degrees; he specializ'd in
the psychology of education and di
rected the extension school. His theo
logical studies were made at St. Ber
nard’s Seminary. Rochester.
Father Bour was first stationed at
St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral, Wilming
ton, and in 1917 he went to St. Law
rence’s Church, Asheville, where he
was administrator for a number of
years during the il’ness of Monsignor
Patrick Marion. On the death of
Monsignor Marion in 1922 he was ap
pointed pastor.
St. Lawrence’s Church, noted as an
architectural gem, was consecrated' in
1 920, Cardinal Gibbons preaching and
R->h~p and Bisho" H-i-’ of
ficiating. The church, designed by
Rafael Guastavino, distingu’shed
Spanish architect who was brought to
Ashevi’le by the Vanderbilts, has the
'nr-est eHi'-ti-al ft'-me of any church
: n th e country, built wholly of tiles,
self-supporting, with a clear span of
f8 bv 82 feet. If St. Lawrence’s were
not thus unique, it still would be one
of the outstanding churches of the
South because of its exquisite beau
ty. Mr. Guastavino gave his services
gratuitously and, ' dying as he was
completing the church he was buried
in one of the chapels.
Asheville had the distinction of be
ing the first city in North Caro’ina to
have two white parishes when in 1927.
two years after the consecration of
Bishop Hafey, Father Bour bought
the res-ident of Dr. Gardner in West
Asheville as the nucleus of a new
congregation. It is dedicated to St.
loan of Arc, and Father Francis J.
McCourt is pastor; the Sisters of
Ch-istian Education who conduct St-
Genevieve’s Co’iege, are in charge of
the parish school.
A third parish has now been start
ed. St. Anthony’s for the colored peo
ple with the Rev. Ronald Scott of
the Fr-nciscan Fathers as pastor.
With three parishes, a parochial
school, a magnificent hospital and one
of the leading colleges of the South
in tb- - Asheville has a right to
feel that it is measuring up in full
measure to the pace set bv the ex
panding Diocese of Raleigh.
BISHOP GALLAGHER of Detroit
told the Detroit Peace Conference, at
tended by representatives of 27 mid-
western coleges and various Catho
lic organizations, that another world
war would mean the destruction of
civilization and Catholics must work
to avoid such a calamity.
