THE BULLETIN OF THE CATHOLIC L AYMEN’S ASSOCIATION OF GEORGIA
MARCH 28, 1936
Mrs. J. J. Lynch of
Atlanta Dies at 83
Beloved “Mother of Missions”
Generous Benefactoress to
Church in Georgia
(Continued from Page One)
failed; her last convention was at
Augusta a year ago October. She was
also a member of the Retreat League,
making retreats at Mt. de Sales
Academy in Macon each summer.
Her faith was foremost in her life
and she nourished that “gift of God”
by her attendance at daily Mass and
the daily reception of Holy Commun
ion whenever possible.
She was noted for her interests in
activities in charity throughout the
State. She was a member of the
Catholic Mission Society, the Catho
lic Layman’s Association from its be
ginning, past president of the Ladies
Altar Society, the oldest society of
organized women in Atlanta, and a
member of the board of the Home for
Incurables.
In her zeal for the promotion of the
Catholic Faith in Georgia Mrs. Lynch
built the St. John the Evangelist
Church in Valdosta, Ga.. the Church
of the Little Flower in Cordele, Ga.,
and gave half the cost for the erec
tion of the new church in Gaines
ville, Ga. She was especially interest
ed in helping the poor missions in
Georgia. She visited many small Mis
sion churches in the state and it was
her delight to give substantial dona
tions wherever needed. It was this
zeal, interest and charity displayed at
all times that merited for her the ti-'
tie “Mother of Georgia Missions”
conferred upon her by the Most Rev.
Michael J. Keyes, retired Bishop of
Savannah.
Mrs. Lynch attended the Interna
tional Eucharistic Congress in Dub
lin, Ireland, in 1932, accompanied by
Father Brennan of Albany. It was
during this visit to Europe that she
had a private audience with The
Holy Father Pope Pius XI.
The funeral was held from Sa
cred Heart Church, Atlanta, March
23, Father Thomas A. Brennan,
pastor of St. Theresa’s Church, Al
bany, Ga., officiating. The sermon
was delivered by Father Joseph E.
Moylan, pastor Immaculate Concep
tion Church, Atlanta. Among the
clergy at the Mass were Very Rev.
James T. Reilly, S. M„ Father Mc
Grath, Father Thomas I. Sheehan,
Washington, Ga., Father Rethans,
Father King, Father Daley, Father
Conlon. Father Quinlan and Father
Weis.
In a telegram, Bishop O’Hara paid
this tribute to Mrs. Lynch: “The
benefactions of Mrs. Lynch to the
Church in Georgia will never be for
gotten. The Diocese of Savannah has
lost a loyal friend.”
Mrs. Lynch’s charity did not cease
with her death, for in her will pro
bated on March 24, she remembered
the Church that she loved, as record
ed elsewhere in this issue.
