Annual Military Field Day

SAVANNAH, Ga.—The Most Rev.
Gerald P. O'Hara, D. D., Bishop of
Savannah, presided and delivered the
address at the commencement of
Benedictine School at which twenty-
six cadets received diplomas.
William Hennessy was valedictorian
and Mahany Ray salutatorian. The
other members of the class were
Thomas McCarthy, William Foran,
John DuPont, John McLaughlin,
James Brennan. Fred Doyle, Jerome
Pinckney, Ebbie Paxton, George
White, James Smith, Edwin Raskin,
Aloysius Handiboe, Arthur Phillips,
Francis Coffee, William Hearn. Sey
mour Kandel, Arthur Byrnes, Dennis
Counihan. Arthur Cranman. Sigo
Mohr, Jack O’Donnell, Thomas Oster-
holtz, Bennett Seig and Roy Tyler.
COMPANY B was declared the
best drilled unit of Benedictine
School at the annual military field
day at the Municipal Stadium; it was
commanded by Cadet Capt. John Du
Pont. The banner for the best drilled
platoon went to second platoon of
Company A, commanded by Lieut.
Jerome Pinckney.
CADET JACK MACHEB of the first
platoon of Company C won the Jor
dan F. Brooks Memorial Medal as the
best drilled cadet, with Cadet Charles
Laffiteau, one of the smallest cadets
in the school second and Cadet Jospeh
Mulligan third. Major J. H. Ruste-
meyer of the Organized Reserves
drilled the battalion. A feature of the
afternoon’s program was the compa
ny drill, including every man in the
battalion, with Cadet Major Mahany
Ray in charge. There was a mass cal-
isthenic drill commanded by Captain
and Adjutant Thomas McCarthy, tent
pitching directed by Captain George
White, and a sham battle win by a
platoon directed by Capt. William
Foran. Captain John McLaughlin’s
platoon gave a demonstration with a
thirty-seven millimeter gun. Capt.
Stephen Koszewski, U. S. A., com
mandant. and Father Stanislaus Beth
el, principal of the school, arranged
the military field day.

MACON, Ga.—Miss Mary Anita
Cassidy, of this city, is one of a class
of thirteen to graduate at Providence
Infirmary, Mobile early in June. Miss
Cassidy is the daughter of Mrs. Wm.
J. Cassidy, of Macon, and is a grad
uate of Mt. de Sales.

AWARDED IN SAVANNAH
Miss Winifred Persse Wins
It at St. Vincent Academy

SAVANNAH, Ga.—Miss Winifred
O’Connor Persse, a member of the
graduating class of Sacred Heart
School, has been declared the winner
of the St. Vincent Academy four-year
scholarship given by Savannah
Council. Knights of Columbus. The
scholarship is awarded as a result of
a competitive examination. Miss
Persse finished first with 290 points,
followed by Miss Jane O’Connor of
St. Vincent’s Grammar School, with
289 points. Miss Agnes Feuger was
third with 288 points; she also is from
St. Vincent’s. The competition is held
every four years.
SAVANNAH COUNCIL also spon
sors a four-year scholarship at Bene
dictine School, but this is not a com
petition year for it.

SAVANNAH COUNCIL’S second
outing of the year at Benedictine
Camp May 24 was a splendid success,
and others are planned for the near
future.
