Ready Convention Speaker

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.—The
seventh annual convention of the St.
Augustine Diocesan Council of Catho
lic Women will be held at the Royal
Worth Hotel in West Palm Beach,
March 30-April 1.
Mrs. George P. Coyle of Jacksonville
Diocesan president, will preside at the
business sessions. The convention will
bring Catholic-women from the entire
state and every Catholic woman is in
vited and every session and function
of the entire Convention is open to
them.
The Committee in charge of Conven
tion arrangements in West Palm Beach
is planning delightful social func
tions: Mrs. A. P. Sadler is convention
chairman, and announces an evening
reception in the ballroom of the Roy
al Worth Hotel, Tuesday evening at
8 p. m.
The convention will open officially
at the Pontifical Mass at St. Edward’s
Church. Palm Beach, Father Doher
ty, S. J., pastor; the sermon will be
delivered by the Rev. Robt. T. Bryant,
S. J., pastor of St. Ann’s Church, West
Palm Beach, Bishop Barry officiating
at the Mass. The Mass Thursday morn
ing at eight will be at St. Ann’s church.

The theme of the convention will be
organization. Richard Reid, editor of
The Bulletin and Laetare Medalist for
1936, will be the guest speaker at the
President’s Banquet Wednesday night,
honoring the presidents of all the local
and deanery units; Mrs. Coyle, dio
cesan president, will be toastmistrees.
The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Michael Ready,
general secretary of the National Cath
olic Welfare Conference, will be the
guest speaker at the Thursday night
banquet. Bishop Barry will deliver
the closing adrress.
Other speakers at the convention
will include the Rt. Rev. Francis Sad-
lier, O. S. B., D. D.; Abbot of St. Leo,
Mrs. A. S. Lucas of Birmingham, Ala.,
president of the Mobile Diocesan
Council, the Rev. Dr. P. E. Nolan of
Lakeland, the Rev. Chas. Elslander,
Sarasota, the Rev. D. A. Lyons of
Jacksonville, the Rev. William Car-
roll of Tallahassee, and other members
of the clergy, as well as officials and
members of the Diocesan Council.
Mrs. J. B. McCollum of Gainesville,
is chairman of the luncheon on Wed
nesday and Mrs. Thomas E. Grady,
Miami, of the luncheon on Thursday.
Mrs. R. Stuyvesant Pierrepont will be
toastmistress of the banquet on Thurs
day night. Mrs. Josephine Maner.
Jacksonville, Mrs. Pater Weiss, Tam
pa, and Mrs. A. B. Beddow, presid
ing at tlie convention sessions.
The Catholic Woman’s Study Club
of West Palm Beach, of which Father
Ruhlman, S. J., is director, is the hos
tess group for the convention. Many
interesting and hospitable features
have been arranged, including an open
reception at the Royal Worth Hotel
Thursday night, with Mrs. Frank
Hirsh and Mrs. Felix Whidden pre
siding, a tour of the beaches Wednes
day from four to six, followed by a
tea, and other entertainment. There
will be a Holy Hour service at St. Ed
ward's Church, Palm Beach, Thursday
afternoon from five to six.
Mrs. A. P. Sadler is general chair
man of the convention committees, as
sisted by Mrs. J. Lee Gleason, Mrs. R.
M. Nevins", Mrs. Frank Hannen, Mrs.

On Tuesday afternoon there will be
a meeting of the board of directors at
the convention hotel at three o’clock,
Mrs. Coyle presiding.
THE ROYAL WORTH
Will be the convention hotel, and
special rates have been made for the
convention. Guest rooms at private
homes are also available; the chair
man of this committee is Mrs. Claude
Weaver, 26 Fourth Street. West Palm
Beach, chairman of the hotel and reg
istration of rooms committee.

Convention to Hear
Noted Soloists
A splendid program of music is
promised those who attend the Dio
cesan Convention of the N. C. C. W.,
at West Palm Beach. The program
is being arranged by Jack Paul
Smith, who is choir director and
baritone soloist of St. Edward’s
Church, Palm Beach. Mr. Smith is
one of the leading baritones of the
San Carlos Opera Company, and
sings at the Little Theatre-in-the-
Woods in the summer.
In addition to Mr. Smith, Mrs. Ei
leen Littleton, soprano, Miss Louise
Wilmot, contralto, both soloists -at St.
Edward’s Church, Mr. Wilbur Mason,
a very popular soloist of the Ro
manies, will participate. Mrs. R. W.
Bentenmuller is chairman of the pro
gram on music.
THE FELLOWSHIP FORUM, anti-
Catholic publication which has faded
from the limelight after its heyday of
the Smith-Hoover campaign, has
changed its name to “The Nation’s Fo
rum”, but continues its same tactics.
The current isue is as anti-Catholic as
the 1928 variety.

MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY was
host to the initial Catholic Press Edu
cational Congress in February, a con
gress attended by over 1,000. Noted
speakers included Dr. Ross J. S. Hoff
man of New York University, Father
Raphael C. McCarty, S. J., president of
Marquette University, Father Daniel
A. Lord, S. J., editor of The Queen’s
Work, the Rev. Dr. Paul Hanly Fur-
fey of the Catholic Univeristy of
America, and othesr equally notable.
The Rev. Robt T. Bryant, S. J., pas
tor of St. Ann’s Church, West Palm
Beach, Fla., host to the convention of
the SL Augustine Diocesan Council
of the National Council of Catholic
Women. Father Bryant was formerly
on the Jesuit Mission Band and of
the faculty at Spring Hill College.
Convention Chairman
MRS. ALFRED P. SADLER, gen
eral chairman of Convention Commit
tee, is President of the Catholic Study
Club, hostess club of the convention.
This club was started two years ago
by Mrs. Sadler, the first study group
in West Palm Beach. She is also
past president of the West Palm
Beach Woman’s Club and first vice
president of the County Federation
of Woman’s Clubs. Mrs. Sadler has
long been an active worker in all
social, civic and welfare work.
NOTED RELIGIOUS ARE
VISITORS IN KEY WEST
KEY WEST, Fla.—The Sisters of
the Holy Names at the convent and
academy of the Immaculate Concep
tion here had the distinction recent
ly of entertaining the Mother Gen
eral of the Order, Mother Margaret,
who was here on an official visit
early in March.
FATHER T. J. SHIELDS, provin
cial of the Jesuit Fathers in the
South, was a visitor here late in
February, his first visit to Florida
since his appointment as provincial.
