CATHEDRAL SOCIETY
SCORES IN OPERETTA
SAVANNAH, Ga.—Nearly two
thousand persons witnessed the splen
did production of “H. M. S. Pinafore”
at the Municipal Auditorium under
the direction of Joseph A. Mendel.
Charles E. Donnelly directed the sing
ing and the Savannah Philharmonic
Orchestra accompanied the operetta.
The performance of the Cathedral
Young People’s Association, of which
Rev. J. W. Kavanagh is chaplain, was
considered one of the finest of its
kind ever presented in Savannah.
SAVANNAH COUNCIL, Knights of
Columbus, Thomas J. Canty, grand
knight, received Holy Communion in
a body at St. Patrick’s Church on
Mother’s Day. Thomas F. Walsh, Jr„
was the principal speaker at the Com
munion breakfast at the K. of C.
Hall, Eugene Butler, faithful naviga
tor of the Fourth Degree Assembly,
presenting him.
FIRST COMMUNION was administ
ered in recent weeks to classes in the
various parishes of the city. Bishop
O’Hara administered First Holy Com
munion to six little girls at St. Mary’s
Home.
BISHOP O’HARA, the Rev. John
J. Kennedy of Augusta and Dr. J.
Reid Broderick were the principal
speakers at the season’s closing ban
quet of the Cathedral Young People’s
Association at the Hotel De Soto.

CATHEDRAL Children of Mary
held their first annual Communion
Breakfast the third Sunday in May
in the library of St. Vincent Academy,
with Bishop O’Hara as the principal
speaker. Miss Loretto Powers pre
sided.

tertains for Its President

ATLANTA. Ga. — Former Governor
and Mrs. John M. Slaton entertained
recently at their home, Wingfield, in
honor of CoL Jack J. Spalding, K.S.G.,
K.M, president of the Atlanta Histori
cal Society, on the occasion of his re
turn to Atlanta after spending the
winter in Florida. Officers and mem
bers of the Historical Society, of
which Governor and Mrs. Slaton are
charter and sustaining members, were
special guests.
JOSEPH P. KENNEDY of Boston,
chairman of the United States Mari
time Commission, and formerly chair
man of the Securities Commission,
was among those awarded honorary
degrees by Oglethorpe University at
its annual commencement exercises;
Mr. Kennedy, an alumnus of Harvard,
received the honorary degree of Doc
tor of Laws.
JOHN F. NEYLArr, distinguished
member of the California Bar, an
alumnus of Seton Hall College, a re
gent of the University of California
and director of the City National
Bank of New York, delivered the bac
calaureate address at the Oglethorpe
University commencement and re
ceived the honorary degree of Doctor
of Laws.
C. J. SIIEEHAN was elected presi
dent of the Pioneer School Boys Club
of Atlanta at the annual meeting late
in May. The club is composed of lead
ing Atlantans who attended schools
here prior to the establishment of the
public school system.
WINNERS in the Catholic schools of
the city of U. D. C. medals for the best
essays on the subject of Raphael
Semmes were: Marist College, Wel
don Harbin; Immaculate Conception
School, Miss Helen Tarver; St. Antho
ny’s School, Miss Helen Filligen; Sa
cred Heart School, Miss Gloria Gorm-
ley. The Sacred Heart medal was giv
en by Mrs. J. Carroll Payne, that of
the Immaculate Conception School by
Mrs. Mollie Sheehan in memory of her
daughter, Messie Moran Everette, SL
Anthony’s by Miss Kathleen Mitchell
in memory of her grandfather, CoL
Alexander M. Wallace, and Marist
College’s by Mrs. James R. Thornton
in memory of her father and mother,

SAVANNAH, Ga.—Savannah Coun
cil, Knights of Columbus, T. J. Canty,
grand knight, will exemplify the ma
jor degree at Savannah Sunday, June
27. Delegations from various councils
in Georgia and South Carolina are
expected to attend the degree.
J. ARTHUR KEARNEY was elect
ed faithful navigator of Savannah
Assembly, Fourth DegreeJKnights of
Columbus, succeeding Eugehe‘<i. But

MACON, Ga. — Mrs. W. A. Mc
Kenna, beloved member of St. Jo
seph’s Parish, died here late in May,
after an illness of three weeks. Mrs.
McKenna was bom in Macon June
21, 1880, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Thomas Callaghan, and was a life
long resident of the city. She was
educated at Mt. de Sales Academy
here and at St. Joseph’s Academy in
Washington. Her husband is widely
known in Georgia labor circles.
Surviving Mrs. McKenna in addi
tion to her husband are four daugh
ters, Mrs. J. C. Garvin, Mrs. W. C.
Baker, Mrs. Edward Hatcher and
Miss Martha McKenna; three sons,
W. A. McKenna, Jr., Thomas M. Mc
Kenna and Andrew McKenna, all of
Macon, and several cousins, including
Martin J. Callaghan, Sister Mary Rita
and Sister Martin Marie. The Rev.
A. C. McLaughlin, S. J., officiated
at the Requiem Mass at the funeral at
St. Joseph’s Church. Interment was
in the Riverside Cemetery.
W. A. McKENNA NAMED
A. F. OF L. ORGANIZER
Just a few days before the death of
his wife, W. A. McKenna was ap
pointed by President William Green
of the American Federation of Labor
a general organizer and special rep
resentative of the federation in this
territory Mr. McKenna was for
many years connected with Reis and
Armstrong, jewelers, but retired five
years ago on account of his health.
His health has improved sufficiently
to allow him. to accept this post. He
is a former alderman here, a former
president of the Macon • Eagles,
a former president of the Central
Georgia Council of the Boy Scouts of
America, and a member of the board
of managers of the W. O. W. For 25
years he served as secretary-treasurer
of the Macon Federation of Labor,
and he has served as vice-president
and secretary-treasurer of the Geor
gia Federation of Labor. He became
a member of the Knights of Colum
bus in Augusta before the Macon
Council was formed, and assisted in
the installation of Macon Council
over thirty years ago.
