MACON, Ga.—Miss Lucille Wright,
15, of the sophomore class of Mt. de
Sales Academy, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Horace Wright, was the winner
of first prize in the essay contest re
cently conducted bv the Macon Asso
ciation of Life Underwriters, in
which there were 403 competitors.
Miss Wright’s prize was fifteen dol
lars; the essay was forwarded to New
York for the national contest, in
which the winner will be awarded
$200,
MBS. EILEEN BOLAND, wife of
Sir John P. Boland, general secre
tary of the Catholic Truth Society
of London, is dead at the age of 60.
Mrs. Boland assisted her husband in
his many Catholic activities and had
received the Cross Pro Ecclesia et
Pontifice for her work.

NEWARK, N. J.—The Rt. Rev.
Ernest Helmstetter, O. S. B., Abbot
of St Mary's Abbey, this city, died
here at the age of 77. Abbot Helm
stetter succumbed shortly after say
ing Mass at the Abbey- He was the
senior Abbot of the Benedictines in
the United States.
Bom in this city. October 7, 1859,
Abbot Helmstetter entered the Bene
dictine College here, later attending
St. Vincent’s College in Latrobe, Pa.
A year later he entered the Arch
abbey there, being admitted to sim
ple profession in 1879. In 1884, he
was sent to Newark when the Bene
dictine Priory was raised to the rank
of abbey, where he served many years
as an instructor. He was head
master of St. Benedict's Preparatory
School from 1905 to 1908, after which
he was named Procurator and Prior
of the abbey. He was appointed Abbot
in 1910. Four years later he was
named president of the American
Congregation of Benedictines, serving
until 1929.
Three Bishops, an Archabbot, and
four Abbots were present at the
requiem Mass for Abbot Helmstetter.
The Most Rev. Thomas H. McLaugh
lin, Auxiliary Bishop of Newark,
celebrated the Mass and the Rt Rev.
Vincent Taylor, O- S. B., Abbot of
Belmont Abbey, Belmont, - N. C.,
preached the sermon. The Most Rev.
Thomas J. Walsh, Bishop of Newark,
spoke a few words after the Mass.
Also present were: the Most Rev.
Frank J. Monaghan, Auxiliary Bishop
of Ogdensburg; the Rt. Rev. Alfred
Koch, O. S. B„ Archabbot of SL Vin
cent’s Axchabbey. Latrobe, Pa.; the
Rt .Rev. Bertrand Doland, O. S- B.,
Abbot of St. Anselm’s Abbey, Man
chester, N. H.; the Rt. Rev. Justus
Wirth, O. S. B., Abbot of St Bede’s
Abbey, Peru, 111., and the Rt. Rev.
Martin Veth, O. S. B.. Abbot of St.
Benedict’s Abbey, Atchison, Kans.

BELMONT, N. C—The Yen. Frater
Anselm Biggs, O. S. B., of Belmont
Abbey pronounced his solemn vows
July 11. The Rt. Rev. Vincent Tay
lor, O. S. B., Abbot-Ordinary of the
Abbey was celebrant of the Mass at
which the profession was made. The
Very Rev. Nicholas Bliley, O. S. B.,
Prior of the Abbey, was master of
ceremonies. Frater Anselm is a
native of Wheeling, W. Va. Present
at the ceremonies were, among others,
Frater Anselm’s mother and sister.
Frater Walter Coggins, O. S- B.,
of Belmont Abbey, completed his
novitate at St- Vincent’s Archabbey
Latrobe, Pa., July 2, and there pro
nounced his simple vows of the years.
He returned to the Abbey at Bel
mont a few days later.

Former Attorney, Recently
Ordained for Diocese of
Charleston
REV. GEORGE LEWIS SMITH

CHARLESTON, S. C—The Rev.
George Lewis Smith, of Middlesex
County, New Jersey, has recently as
sumed his duties as a secular priest
of the Diocese of Charleston, having
been assigned as assistant at the Ca
thedral of St. John the Baptist.
Father Smith was ordained to the
priesthood in Rome on Passion Sun
day, March 13, 1937.
Coining from a family which has
lived in New Jersey for generations,
Father Smith completing his pre
paratory education was associated
with the South River Trust Company
for two years, resigning to commence
the study of law.
He received the degree of LL. B.
with honors from the New Jersey
Law School in June, 1927. Haying
passed the New Jersey bar examina
tion he began the practice of law in
Middlesex County, maintaining of
fices at South River. Widely known
as a trial lawyer, Father Smith was
actively engaged in the practice of
law for nine years, until he made his
decision to study for the priesthood.
Father Smith was prominent in
civic activity in New Jersey, and
was a leader in the Knights of Co
lumbus, in the Boy Work program,
and in the laymen’s retreat move
ment in his state. At one time he
was state advocate of the Knights of
Columbus of New Jersey.
He was admitted to practice before
the bar of the Supreme Court of the
United States at the opening session
of the court in the new Supreme
Court Building in Washington.
He has traveled extensively in Eu
rope, the Holy Land, Asia and
Africa.

Goodlett, interne at the General Hos
pital here, and Dr. Ralph J. Low,
of New York City, are joining the
staff of St. Francis Hospital here.
Dr. Goodlett is a graduate of Fur
man University and the Medical Col
lege of Charleston; Dr. Low has been
serving an interneship in New York.
MISS FRANCES PINSON was host
ess at the June meeting of the Junior
Council of Catholic Women, Miss
Winifred Bahan presiding. The
council spoonsored a swimming party
at Woods Hole during June.
Atlanta Physician
Leaves His General Library
to St. Joseph’s Infirmary

ATLANTA. Ga.—The will of Dr. C.
Dunbar Roy, internationally known
Atlanta physician, who died July 5
at the age of 70, leaves his general
library to St. Joseph’s Infirmary here.
Dr. Roy, who was not a Catholic, left
his medical library to Emory Univer
sity.
CAPT- CHAS A. MORAN of Sacred
Heart parish, a member of the Mili
tary Intelligence (Reserve), Fourth
Corps. U. S. A., was among those
participating in the Military Mass in
New York marking the tercentenary
of the purchase of Governor’s Island
there from the Indians.
ENSIGN WILLIAM GREGG, an
alumnus, of Marist College, was a
member of the Class of 1937 graduated
at the United States Naval Academy
at Annapolis.

AUTOMOBILE ACCIDENT
Death of James O’Connei*
Results When Car Wrecks

SAVANNAH, Ga. — James O’Con
nell, aged 33, a member of Sacred
Heart Parish, met his death on July
4, when the automobile in which he
was returning to Savannah from a
trip to the North overturned near
Lillington, N. C.
Mr. O’Connell was the son of Mr.
and Mrs. P. J O’Connell, 11 Sixtieth
Street, West, and besides his parents
is survived by two sisters, Mrs.
Mary Pattit and Miss Eileen O’Con
nell; five brothers, John D., Patrick
J., Mathew R., Dennis, and Daniel
O’Connell.
Funeral services were held from
the Sacred Heart Church, with inter
ment in the Catholic Cemetery.

of Augusta Parish, Dies
Funeral of Mattie Wallace at
Immaculate Conception
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Mattie Wallace,
one of the most highly esteemed col
ored women of Augusta, died at her
residence on Gwinnett Street on July
10, and funeral services were held
from the Church of the Immaculate
Conception, of which parish she had
been a devout member, the Rev. A.
Sittler, S- M. A., officiating. Inter
ment was in Millen.
Surviving are her husband, Merritt
W. Wallace, one of Augusta’s leading
colored citizens; a brother, Hershel
Lester, and several nieces.
REV. JOHN P. BOLAND, of Buf
falo, has been named chairman of the
New York Labor Relations Board by
Governor Lehman.
