President of Universalist
Church Conference Lauds
Position of Archbishop
(By N. C. W. C. News Service)
CHICAGO.—Using the message of
His Eminence George Cardinal Mun
delein, Archbishop of Chicago, before
the Holy Name Society last month
as a strong pronouncement against
the evils of today, the Rev. Walter
H. Macpherson, D. D., of Joliet, 111.,
President of the Universalist General
Convention, comprising the Univers
alist Church in the United States,
has made it the subject of a. nation
wide message to his followers.
The information was brought to
light through an interesting coinci
dence—the chance visit of Prof. Ed
ward J. K. Menge, head of the Biol
ogy Department of the College of St.
Francis, Joliet, to the office of Dr.
Macpherson. Dr. Menge observed a
copy of The New World spread out
upon the minister’s desk. Asked
what inspiration a Catholic paper
furnished him. Dr. Maspherson
pointed to the Cardinal’s pronounce
ment and said he thought it was the
best thing that had come out in a
long time. The Universalist leader
further gave Dr. Menge a copy of his
own message to his people based on
the Cardinal's words.
In The Christian Leader (Uni
versalist) Dr. Macpherson said:
“A great Priest of God and not A
Prince of the Church’ spoke through
the Ups of Cardinal Mundelein in
Chicago on the evening of January
2nd when, addressing 2,000 members
of the Holy Name Society, he uttered
a chaUenge to every professing Chris
tian in ‘these states’ and throughout
Christendom.
“The Roman Catholic Church never
fights shadows, and so, the Cardinal
warned his followers to cease war
ring against Socialism, and Commun
ism and to direct their attack against
those persons and forces that breed
Communism and Atheism.
“And who and what are those per
sons and forces?
“The Cardinal named them-
And we, if we are prepared to
look life in the face can see those
persons and forces clearly defined
in nominal Christians who think
more of 5 per cent net and ‘tax ex
empt’ government bonds than they
do of the application of the gospel
of Jesus Christ.”
“The Cardinal is appealing to the
masses in the Roman CathoUc
Church,” Dr. Macpherson continued,
because he knows that men of wealth
are beginning to suspect that they
cannot count on the clergy to act
as a ‘police force’ to hold the great
masses of the people in subjection to
a social order based on pagan rather
than Christian ideals. The records
show a decline in subscriptions to the
Church of over JO per cent since
1932 with tremendous increase in
money expended on jewelry, cigar
ettes, motor cars, movies, whiskey
and beer-
“The Cardinal agrees with the po
sition I took before the Board of
Trustees of the Universalist General
Convention in 1934, to wit: That the
Church must count on a multiplicity
of smaU givers instead of dreaming
of huge gifts from a few. People
do not give support to either persons
or institutions unless they have faith
in them.”
