Wins Essay Contest
St. Vincent Student Second
in Underwriters’ Compe
tition for Savannah

SAVANAH, Ga.—J. Reid, Joyce,
Jr., a student at Benedictine School,
won first prize, ten dollars, in the an
nual essay contest sponsored by the
Life Underwriters, and Miss Winifred
Persse, a students at St. Vincent’s
Academy, was awarded second prize,
five dollars. The third prize went
to a student from Savannah High
School. Mr. Joyce’s essay will be
entered in the state contest in com
petition for the prize of $250.
REV RICHARD F. TELLERS, a
brother of Mrs. J. Reid Broderick,
will be ordained to the priesthood
at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Erie, Pa..
May 26 by tah Most Rev. John Mark
Gannon, D.D., Bishop of Erie. Dr.
and Mrs. Broderick will attend the
ordination ceremony. Father Tellers
will sing his first Solemn High Mass
at St. Joseph’s Church, Erie, where
Mrs. Broderick was once organist.
Father Tellers is well known in Sa
vannah where he has visited his sis
ter and brother-in-law.

nurses of St. Joseph’s Hospital Train
ing School for Nurses at the Cathe
dral of St. John the Baptist Monday

Farley, Postmaster-General of the
United States, will be Georgia’s guest
Wednesday of the coming week when
he comes to the state to dedicate the
new Post Office Building at Millen.
He will pay brief visits also to States
boro and other communities in the
neighborhood.

in Athens in May at the Henry Grady
School of Journalism of the Univers
ity of Georgia, Miss Loretto Powers,
editor-in-chief of The Flash, publish
ed by the seniors of St. Vincent’s
Academy here, Will preside. Miss
Powers is president of the associa
tion.
REV. JOSEPH BUCKLEY, S.M., of
the Marist Fathers was the retreat-
master at the annual retreat for the
students of St. Vincent’s during Holy
Week. Father Buckley is a mem
ber of the faculty of Notre Dame
Seminary, the seminary of the Arch
diocese of New Orleans.

Lenten play in three acts, at the
Junior High School auditorium here.

IS DEAD IN IRELAND
ST. AUGUST 1 'JE, Fla.—St. Leo Col
lege basketball team won the Cath
olic championship of the Diocese tnd
state by winning the Catholic high
school tournament late in March
through a victory over St. Paul’s of
Jacksonville, 27 to 26, in one of the
most exciting games ever seen on a
local court. The victory was the
twenty-eighth in thirty-two starts for
th St. Leo five.
St. Leo’s started off by defeating
Gesu team of Miami, 51 to 14, follow
ing it up with a victory over St. Jo
seph’s Academy, 29 to 22.
BISHOP THOMAS C. O’REILLY of
Scranton, who died in Miami in
March, had been in Florida for some
time seeking to recover from a stroke
which incapacitated him- He was well
known in Florida and auniversal fav
orite with all who came in contact
with him.

over a recent week-end, attended

REV. FRANCIS W. O’HARA, S. J.
who had served on the faculties of
Holy Cross College, Fordham, Loy
ola in Baltimore and other Jesuit
schools and who was in the Philip
pines from 1925 to 1931, died at Miami
Beach in March at the age of 47.
Father O’Hara was in Florida recup
erating from an illness.

burg which sponsored a testimonial
for the Rev. Jarpes J. O’Riordan, pas

bilee. was most successful. Father
Riordan devoted the results of the
effort toward reducing the debt on
the parish.

lectured in Key West recently on
“The Little Flower”, whose cananiza-
tion ceremonies she attended in Rome.

Ledwith of the Sisters of * Mercy,
Navan, Ireland died suddenly March
22 at the Convent of Mercv. Sister
Monica was a native of Kiimessan
and recently celebrated her fortv-
fifth anniversary in the order. Al
most her whole religious life was
spent at St. Mary’s. Athlumney.

Sergeant Murphy’s great nerserver-
ance in attaining this distinguished
rank and his great ability in directing
the club should set an example not
only to those desiring Rifle Club
awards, but, also, to those wanting
scholastic honors.
