TALLAHASSEE, Fla.—Mrs. R. M.
Clewis of Tampa was elected presi
dent of the St. Augustine Diocesan
Council of the National Council of
Catholic Women at the annual con
vention held here late in April, a con
vention honored by the presence of the
Most Rev. Patrick J. Barry. D.D.,
Bishop of St. Augustine, and the
Most Rev. Gerald P. O’Hara, D.D.,
Bishop of Savannah-Atlanta, both of
whom were on the conventon pro
gram.
Mrs. Clewis succeds Mrs. George R.
Coyle of Jacksonville, who retires
after most successful terms of office.
Mrs. V. E. Campbell of Lakelani was
elected recording secretary, Mrs.
George H. McIntyre, Jacksonville,
treasurer. Mrs. Phil Genovar. St. Au
gustine. auditor, and Mrs. Thomas E.
Grady, Miami, parliamentarian.

Bishop Barry officiated at the
Pontificial Mass which opened the con
vention, the sermon being delivered
by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. D. A. Lyons,
Jacksonville. The Confraternity of the
Blessed Sacrament, Mrs. Murray
Sharkey, president, entertained at
breakfast, and welcomed the conven
tion in the name of the Confraternity
at the first business meeting. Mayor
J. R. Jinks extended a welcome in
the name of the city and the Rev.
William Carroll in the name of the
parishs. Mrs. W. W. Pease of Coral
Gables responded. .
Mrs. Coyle presided at the conven
tion, Mrs. Clewis at the breakfast
round table, Mrs. J. W. McCollum at
a luncheon, and Mrs. Frank Westen-
dick at the final banquet. The speak
ers at the final banquet were Bishop
Barry. Bishop O'Hara. Monsignor Mc
Gill, Father Carroll Mrs. McCollum,
Justice Armstead of the State Su
preme Court and Dr. Sadie Yeung of
Florida State College for Women.
Reports made by the various com
mittees showed that the Diocesan
Council its deanery groups and local
units were active and flourishing. The
convention was most successful, irom
both a business and a social stand
point. Among the attractive social
features was a tea tendered the visi-
tores by the Newman Club of the
Florida State College for Women.
At an evening party the presidents of
the four deanery councils. Miss Alice
Byrne, Mrs. Peter Weis. Mrs. A. B.
Beddow and Mrs. Claude Weaver,
presided.
The Rt. Rev. Msgr. P. J. McGill,
chancellor of the Diocese, addressed
the convention on problems of or
ganization, Father Carroll on the ad
visability of a Catholic Center at
Tallahassee and the Rev. Dr. P. E.
Nolan, Lakeland, on the N. C. C. W.
and its possibilities. The Rev. John F.
McKeown was master of ceremonies
at the convention Mass, and address
ed the convention on Catholic Unity.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jackson
ville was host to one of America’s
leading Catholic churchmen, the
Most Rev. Duane G. Hunt, D. D„
Bishop of the Diocese of Salt Lake
City. Bishop Hunt was visiting his
sister. Mrs. Ralph G. Glassfield.
The Bishop was consecrated last
October and this was his first visit
since. He is well known in the state;
he has made a number of trips
through Florida with his brother-in-
law, who is the general manager of
the State Chamber of Commerce.
SILVER JUBILEE: Mr. and Mrs. T.
C. Yabanez celebrated the silver
jubilee of their marriage here late in
April. The ceremony took place in
St. Paul’s Church, where the Rt. Rev.
Msgr. Denis A. Lyons invoked the
blessing of God and the benediction
of the church upon the marriage, on
the occasion of their wenty-fifth an
niversary.
ST. PAUL’S Parent’s Auxiliary
held its final meeting of the season
May 4 in the auditorium, at which
time Mrs. James L. Murphy. Jr., was
elected president for the coming term.
Other officers chosen were: Mrs. J.
H. Coopedge, first vice-president;
Mrs. Cyril Sedding, second vice-
president; Mrs. C. M. Donahoe, treas
urer; Mrs. Frank Fuss, secretary.

Bowles, chairman of the nominating
committee, was unanimously accept
ed.
COURT HOLY ROSARY, Catholic
Daughters of America, was hostess
at a Communion breakfast in the par
ish hall recently. The honor guests
being members of the Altar Society of
the Holy Rosary parish. Members of
both organizations convened in a
body to atend the 8 o’clock Mass in
the Holy Rosary Church and received
Holy Communion in honor of living
and deseased members.
THE CATHOLIC WOMAN’S Club
held its May meeting Sunday. May 15,
in Gable Hall of the Woman’s Club,
with Mrs. Frank P. Beddow, presi
dent; reports of officers and commit
tee chairmen were heard. Mrs.
George P. Coyle succeeded Mrs. Bed
dow as president.
Later a cake and punch course was
served on the terrace by the hostesses,
Mrs. Francis Conroy. Mrs. Anna Ir
win and Mrs. W. J. Power. The final
meeting of the current events class
was held in the beautiful home of
Mrs. Jesse M. Elliott, in Ortega on
May 23 and Miss Regina Carter ar
ranged the program.
THE DAD’S CLUB of St. Paul's
School held a mammoth bridge par
ty here May 29 in the school auditor
ium for the purpose of raising funds
for athletic equipment and to incerase
interest in athletic activities of the
schol.
Gerge P. Coyle was the general
chairman and was assisted by the fol
lowing: Messrs. A. Heaney, Asa
Brodeaur, James Coppedge, Quin R.
Barton. Perse Lethbridge, Cyril Sed-
din, Henry Parr, James Monohan,
Lester Foley and James L. Murphy.
CARNIVAL: The annual Spring
carnival for the benefit of the Holy
Rosary Church was held in the par
ish hall Tuesday, May 17, and Wed
nesday, May 18. Chicken dinners
were served each evening, under Mrs.
George W. Halsema and Mrs. T. D.
Haley's supervision. The Rev. J. J.
Nevin, pastor of the Holy Rosary
Church, was general chairman of the
carnival.
THE ALUMNI Association of St.
Joseph’s Academy entertained for its
members with an “at home” on Sun
day afternoon, May 15, in foe parlors
of the academy. The general chair
man for this affair was Miss Gertrude
Duffy, with Miss Margaret Slater as
co-chairman. Misses Doris Feiber,
Kay Halsema, Myrtle Grady, Ruth
Lockett. Mary Rizk and Aileen
Clark, Kenneth King and Francis
Danese were members of the commit
tee.
BAZAAR: The annual bazaar, spon
sored by the Altar Society of the.
Church of Our Lady of the Angels,
was held in the parish hall early in
may. The general chairman of the
bazaar was William Mclnamey and
Mrs. T. E. Covitt was in charge of
the suppers, assised by Mrs. Mary
Roche, Mrs. Annie Brown. Mrs.
Blessing, Mrs. Griffin, Mrs. Thomp-
eson. Mrs. Huston and Mrs. M.
Goodhead. Mrs. S. Austin. Mrs. C.
Bohn. N£rs. E. Wofford. Mrs. Series
and Mrs. Cullen were in charge of
the booths.
MRS. BESSIE LEACH: Funeral ser
vices for Mrs. Leach, who died sud
denly here recently were held from
the Church of the Immaculate Con
ception, the Rev. James J. Meehan.
L.L.D.. officiating. Interment was in
St. Mary's Cemetery. Mrs. Leach
was born at Charleston, S. C.,
moving to this city 38 years ago
make.her home. Surviving Mrs.
Leach are a sister, Mrs. W. D. Lof-
tin. of Callahan, Fla.; one brother, W.
C. Marines, of Galveston, Texas; a
niece, Mrs. Shannon Linning, Jr.,
and a nephew, Powell Cason, both of
this citv.
VAN H. WESTERVELT, died at
the age of 72 at a local hospital re
cently, after a long illness. Funeral
services were held in the Church of
the Immaculate Conception, with the i
Rev. M. F. Monahan, pastor of the
Church of the Assumption, official
ing. Mr. Westervelt was a native of
New York. Before coming to his
city he was engaged in the title bus-
niess. He was owner of the Jackson
ville Heights Improvement Com
pany for many years and in 19C6 he
becam associated with the Florida
Abstract and Title Insurance Com
pany and at the time of his retire
ment six years ago was assistan sec
retary of the firm. He was an atcive
member of the Knights of Columbus.
SCANLON-NICHOLS:. The Rt.
Rev. Monsignor D. A. Lyons, offi
ciated at the marriage of Miss Helen
Scanlon and Mr. George William
Nichols, which took place at St. Paul’s
Church with a Nuptial Mass. Mrs.
Nichols is the daughter of Mrs. Wil
liam Edward Scanlon and the late
William Edward Scanlon, and is a
graduate of the University of Wis
consin, and has taught in Andrew
Jackson High School in the Spanish
department since moving to Jackson
ville. Mr. Nichols is the son of the
late Mr. and Mrs. George William
Nichols and is a graduate of the Uni
versity cf Wisconsin and is associat
ed with Haley and Sons, realtors,
Madisoft, Wis. They are residing in
Madison, Wis.
KEVIB ALL-TUMBLESON: Miss
Anne Clare Kimball and Robert
James Tumbleson were united in
marriage at a Nuptial Mass in St.
Paul’s Church May 9, with Monsig
nor Lyons officiating. Mrs. Tumble-
son is the granddaughter of Mrs.
Georgia Holt and a graduate of St.
Paul’s High School and St. Vincent’s
School of Nursing. Mr. Tumbleson,
son of Mrs. Grady O’Grady, is a
graduate of Benedictine High School
in SavannaK. Ga., and has attended
The Citadel in Charleston, S. C. He
is connected in business w ith the
McKesson-Groove-tSewart Company
in this city,

MILLER-BURLESON: The Rev
John J. Nevin officiated at the mar
riage of Miss Alma Pauline Miller
and Ray Burleson, which took place
at the Church of the Toly Rosary
with a Nuptial Mass. Mrs. Burleson
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. An
drew A. Miller, is a graduate of the
Academy of the Holy Angles is New
Orleans, La., and has made her home
herre for the past two years. Mr
Burleson, the son of Mr. and Mrs
Carl E. Burleson, is a graduate of the
Andrew Jackson Senior High School
and is connected with the Sinclair
Refining Company.
EUGENE HERNANDEZ: The Rev.
James H. Cann. of Holy Rosary
Church, officiated at the funeral ser
vices for Eugene Hernandez, aged
67, who died recently in a local hos
pital. Interment was in St. Mary’s
Cemetery.
Mr. Hernandez was a life-long res
ident of Duval County. Surviving
Mr. Hernandez are Mrs. C. J. Cary,
Jacksonville; Mrs. Louise Newberry,
Miami; Misses Edith and Blanche
Hernandez; five sons, Eugene, Carl
Antony, Francis and Joseph Hernan
dez, Miami; and a sister, Mrs. Mamie
Havener, Jacksonville.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.—Miss Jane
Arthur, a senior at St. Joseph’s Acad
emy, St. Augustine, has been declared
the winner of the annual essay con
test sponsored by the Florida State
Council, Knights of Columbus, Leo
T. Bowles, state secretary, an
nounces. The prize, a silver cup suit
ably inscribed, will be presented Miss
Arthur at the commencement exer
cises at St. Joseph's by State Deputy
James B. Clark.
This is the tenth essay con tost of tho
series, and the subject, selected by
the Most Rev. Patrick Barry, D. D.,
Bishop of St. Augustine, was “The
Life and Times of Bishop Augustine
Verot, Vica-Apostolic of Florida and
First Bishop of the Diocese of St. Au
gustine (1858-1876). ” The 106 essays
submitted from 13 schools were judged
by Professor A. J. Hanna of the De
partment of History and Government
of Rollins College. Professor Hanna
particularly complimented the essays
submitted by students of St. Joseph's
Academy, St. Augustine, and Immacu
late Conception School, Jacksonville.
