Church Wins Church-State
‘ Clash in North Carolina
Bishop McGuinness Leads Clergy i;o Victory Over State
Forces Led by Governor Hoey in Stirring Struggle in
Softball Game on Diamond at Nazareth, N. C.
From The Raleigh, N. C., Times
Governor Clyde R. Hoey gave his
fellow state coworkers not only his
moral support as well as a single in
lhe ninth when he went in as a pinch-
hitter, but despite all this priests of the
Catholic Church walloped state offic
ials 28 to 17 in their second annual soft-
all classic on the Nazareth Catholic
Orphanage diamond.
, Hundreds of fans cheered the ef-
jts of the state team, which includ-
ociate Justices William A. De-
Wallace Winborne and W. V.
aill of the Supreme Court, to up-
Ihe Church sluggers and even up
Iseries, but the southpaw pitching
father Michael Begley of High Point
J the righthanded teasers served up
Father John Brown of Raleigh were
ore than the alleged swatsmiths of
state team could solve.'
The contest opened with Governor
Joey in the box and the Most Rev.
Eugene Joseph McGuiness, Bishop of
Jie Raleigh Diocese, at the bat. The
governor whistled two strikes by the
bishop and then the latter singled.
[Both then left the game, but both sat
l and watched the contest to the bitter-
end.
No less than eight home runs, two
each by Father Francis Scheurich of
Dunn, third baseman, and Father John
Manley of Raleigh, shortstop, were car
pentered during the game and no one
could find out just how many hits the
two teams amassed during the game.
The state's only home run was de
livered by Mr. Justice Barnhill, who
almost tore his. pants and did scratch
Bis knees when he fell rounding sec
ond base on a hard smash into left-
field. He recovered in time to beat the
relay into home. For his efforts he got
a resounding cheer.
There was much debate as to wheth
er the pitching of William J. Spain,
assistant state revenue commissioner,
pr the atrocious fielding by most of
the state team was to blame for the 28’
runs Hie Catholic Fathers lugged over
home plate. In truth, the Fathers
slapped pitch after pitch of Pitcher
Spain into the outer gardens and Sec
retary of State Thad Bure, who play
ed leftfield with the help of Purchas
ing Director J. Benton Stacey, can
vouch for the.fact that Mr. Spain as a
pitcher is either on the dowmgrade or
else the Fathers have improved in
their batting since the first contest a
year ago when Hurler Spain was not
slugged so badly as he was Monday
afternoon.
Smelling of liniment Tuesday, Mr.
Spain said he was tempted to issue a
two thousand word statement and call
names, but later decided he would not.
Mr. Justice Winborne and Mr. Stacy,
however, accorded Pitcher Spain he
roic support in the field. With his pipe
in his mouth, Mr. Stacy snagged sev
eral flies and kept his fellow leftfield-
er, Secretary Eure, from collapse from
utter exhaustion. Mr. Justice Barnhill,
a lefthanded thirdbaseman, no less,
made some good plays at the hot corner
and Mr. Justice Devin got along fairly
well at first.
Revenue Commissioner A. J. Max
well lasted two innings at second base
and then yelled for one of his fellow
tax gatherers, Bob Ward, to relieve
him.
State Treasurer Charles M. Johnson
lasted the game in right field, but he
would probably like to forget the game
as he had a very bad time with the
liners that whistled out into liis pas
ture. As the catcher, T. Wade Bru
ton, assistant attorney general, did as
well as he could.
In sheer desperation and in the hope
of starting a rally, Walter Lee Horton,
manager of the state team, pulled Gov
ernor Hoey out of a shady spot with
two out in the ninth and sent him in
to pinch hit. His Excellency singled,
but Mr. Justice Devin hit a weak roll
er to the infield and was tossed out at
first to end the game.
Following the game the priests en
tertained the losers at a buffet supper
at the orphanage.
Martial airs were played in the early
part of the game by the State-College
band under the direction of Major C.
D. Kutschinskl.
LEFTISTS dominate many "peace
strikes" in college, the Trinity League
in New York asserts, pointing -to the
presence of such left-wingers as Earl
Browder, general secretary of the
Communist party, and other radicals
as speakers during such agitations. At
one such meeting at Columbia Uni
versity, numerous persons not con
nected with Columbia were active,
distributing Red literature.
