LITERARY RECITAL
Shakespearean Program Is
Presented at Aiken, S. C.

AIKEN, S. C.—The Timrod Literary
Society of St. Angela Academy, pre
sented a pleasing and cultural Lec
ture Recital from the dramatic works
and song lyrics of William Shakes
peare in commemoration of the one
hundred and seventy-fourth birthday
of this famous artist.
The main hall of the Academy,
which was decked in blue and gold—
the class colors—with ferns and
flowers ■ forming a picturesque back
ground. The dramatic recitations
and readings were interspersed with
instrumental music selections. The
Choral Class of the Academy con
tributed a number of Shakespearian
song lyrics.

SPRING ACTIVITIES
AT ST. GENEVIEVE’S
“Chimes of Normandy”,
Light Opera, Presented

ASHEVILLE, N. C. — The month of
May at St. Genevieve-of-the-Pines is
marked by many and various activi
ties in all branches and in all depart
ments.
"The Chimes of Normandy,” a fa
mous light opera by Robert Plan-
quette, was presented April 29, by
the Acadamic pupils of St. Gene
vieve's This opera is noted in French
musical history for its beautiful and
harmonious songs and choruses. The
cast of the production numbered six
ty, including the principal characters
and the choruses of villagers, butlers,
coachmen, peasants and maids. The
setting of the play was a village in
Normandy, France, during the reign
of Louis XIV; the scenery, lighting ef
fects and the colorful picturesque cos
tumes added to the impressive stage
ensemble. The entire performance
was a great success and merited the
enthusiastic praise of the audience
in its artistry and ’eclat.
The freshman class gave a tea-dance
May 6 for the members of the grad
uating class. The large study hall
was decorated like the bottom of the
sea with balloon fish and seaweed
pendant from the ceiling. Dancing
contests and typical refreshments
were enjoyed. At the close of the
party ,the guests retired to the front
steps where the seniors were given
the annual balloon “send-off”. This
affair marked the first of a series of
social events planned for the grad
uates.
On Mother’s Day, the Sodality of
the Children of Mary held its semi
annual reception in the convent chapf
el. After the ceremony of the greet)
and blue ribbons, the Rev. Arthur
Racette gave an inspiring sermon oh
the. grandeur of the Blessed Mothe%
Later a short program, followed by
refreshments, was enjoyed in the au
ditorium.
Plans and final arrangements for
the closing of the school year are now
well under way. Field Day, the ten
nis tournaments and commencement
are features in the final weeks of
school. Commencement week this
year will start May 30, and a variety
of programs are being prepared.
LITTLE FLOWER CAMP will be
gin its seventh season Wedensday,
June 29. Many reservations are com
ing in, and all indications point to a
most successful camp season. For
