Monday
The Southeastern Fair Association
is sponsoring AAA professional auto
mobile races at Lakewood Park this
year, Sunday, July 3 and Monday.
July 4th, winding up with a 4th of
July Fireworks celebration Monday
night.
According to Mike Benton, presi
dent of the Fair, he has engaged
the Hankinson Speedways, of New
York City, to stage AAA races on
these dates, which brings back the
high type of auto races held at Lake-
wood in 1933-4 and 5, when such stars
as Billy Winn, Johnny Sawyer,
Lloyd Vieaux who was in a fatal ac
cident at Lakewood in 1934, Chet
Gardner, Doc McKenzie, Vern Oren-
dorff who met death in Carolina in
1935, Billy Devore, and many others
who made the Lakewood oval na
tionally famous.
The officials at Lakewood Park an
nounce they are preparing for many
spend-the-day picnic parties on the
4th, and thousands of the guest will
remain over to see the fireworks cele
bration at 9 p. m. Monday. The regu
lar standard admission charges pre
vail during the two days of racing,
but there is no charge at the gates
after the races are concluded.
The Lakewood Midway is in full
blast, with Merry-Go-Round, Roller
Coaster Greyhound, Whip, Dodgem,
Fun-House, games and entertainment
galore, to make the occasion one to
be enjoyed by visitors from out of
town. Wiener roasting pits, barbe
cue pits, and picnic tables will be at
convenient* locations over the
grounds.
Last year’s attendance at the July
4th classic was approximately 20,000,
and Benton expects 25,000 to see the
popular AAA races. Calcium Chlo
ride will be lavished on the dirt
trade, according to Virgil Meigs, Fair
Secretary, and he expects to make
the track as near dustless as possible.
He states the track is in much bet
ter shape than in many years, and has
been completely overhauled during
the winter by WPA forces. Adv,
