IS DEAD IN KENTUCKY
Rev. Fidelis Meierl Was
Pastor at Middlesboro
ST. BANARD, Ala.— The Rev. Fi
delis Meierl, O. S. B., pastor of St.
Julian’s Church, Middlesboro, Ky., and
a member of the Benedictine Commun
ity here, died late in January at the
age of 44 when it appeared that he
was on the road to recovery from a
recent operation. Father Fidelis was
bom in Bavaria, entered the Benedic
tine Order here in 1914, received his
Master’s degree at the Catholic Uni
versity, and was ordained September
8. 1921. He had been pastor at Mid
dlesboro since 1933, and previously was
perfect of the minor seminary here.
Miss Ella A. Collins,
Charlestonian, Dies
CHARLESTON, S. C. — Miss Ella
A. Collins, daughter of the late Mr.
and Mrs. Patrick Collins, a native of
Charleston, died early in February in
Norfolk, where she had been making
her home. Miss Collins’ family was
widely known in this city; surviving
her are three nephews, John C. Slat
tery. Arthur Slattery and Capt. Julian
H. Collins, U. S. N., and by several
grandnephews and grandnieces.

AUGUSTA ,Ga. — The Rev. George
Lewis Smith of St. Mary’s Church,
Aiken, S. C., was the speaker at the
February meeting of the Sacred
Heart Council of the National Council
of Catholic Women the third of the
series of winter lectures being given
by the Council.
MISS ROSALYN SYLVESTER, a
graduate of Mount St. Joseph’s Acad
emy, will be the valedictorian of this
year's class Of the Junior College of
Augusta, President Eric W. Hardy
announces. Miss Sylvester has had
a distinguished scholastic record in
the college, which is co-educational. .
JUDGE JOSEPH E. BRYSON of
Municipal Court, a member of St.
Mary’s Parish, was made an honor
ary member of the Central Labor Un
ion recently, the membership card be
ing presented to him at a recent meet
ing.
ARCHBISHOP RUMMEL of New
Orleans has been named an officer
of the Legion of Honor by France
for promoting the use of the French
language in parts of Louisiana where
there are many persons of French
descent.

CHARLESTON, S. C.— Mrs. Belinda
Agnes Torlay, widow of Frank L. Tor-
lay, one of the oldest members of
Cathedral parish, died late in January
at the age of 84. Mrs. Torlay was bom
in Charleston November 3, 1854, and
had lived here all her life. Surviving
are five sons, John F., William B.,
Frank J., Lawrence J., and Philip A.
Torlay; five daughters, Mrs. Eva L.
Voight, Mrs. Thomas J. McGorty, Mrs.
William T. West, Mrs. C. E. Cole, and
Mrs. Charles R. Ritt; thirty-eight
grandchildren and eleven great-grand
children. The funeral was held from
the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist,
with a Requim Mass; interment was in
St. Lawrence Cemetery.
