MACON, Ga. — At the annual
meeting of the Macon Branch of the
Catholic Laymen’s Association of
Georgia, the following officers were
elected: M. J. Callaghan, Sr., presi
dent; R. H. Casson. first vice-presi
dent; E. P. Lackay. Mrs. C. L. Adams,
Sr, Mrs Herman Huhn, Sr, vice-pres
idents; P. J. Murphy, corresponding
secretary; Miss Ala Cassidy, secre
tary, Miss Julia McCreary, treasurer.
The executive committee, which is
headed by A. A. Bennedetto, includes
Dr. W. D. Wells, Charles H. Smith,
Raymond McDonnell, Mrs. J. V.
Sheridan, Mrs. R. F. Wynne, Mrs.
Regis Lomax, and Miss Gertrude
Weisz.
As a mark of respect, and in recog
nition of his untiring efforts on be

Death in Charleston
of Former Augustan
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Funeral services
for Dennis P. O’Connell, age 75, whose
death took place at his residence in
Charleston, March 3, were held from
St Patrick’s Church here, the Rev.
Jeremiah O’Hara officiating.
Mr. O’Connell, a native of Augusta,
was formerly a member of the city
council and had served as a member
of the Georgia Legislature. He was
a retired member of the Charleston
Navy Yard.
He is survived by one son, Dennis
P. O’Connell, Jr., of Charleston;
three sisters, Mrs. Catherine Colvin,
Mrs. V. O’Donnell and Mrs. Charles
Bland, all of New York Cityl
His wife was the late Mrs. Rosa
Fagan O'Connell.
MRS. BESSIE ANN GLEASON,
FUNERAL HELD IN AUGUSTA
AUGUSTA, Ga.—Funeral services
for Mrs. Bessie Ann Gleason, whose
death occurred February 29, were held
from the Sacred Heart Church, the
Rev. J. E. .O’Donohoe, S. J., pro
nouncing the absolution.
Mrs. Gleason, a native of Cobb
County, was 83 years old, and had
been a resident of this city for 75
years. She was the daughter of the
late William Gassaway and Lucinda
Harbin, and the wife of the late James
Gleason. Survivors include three sons,
James P. Gleason, C. J. Gleason, and
W. F. Gleason; a sister, Mrs. R. E.
Skinner; and a number of grandchil
dren.

OF D. P. SULLIVAN
AUGUSTA, Ga — Funeral services
for Mr. Daniel Patrick Sullivan, re
tired merchant, who died on February
22, were held from the Sacred Heart
Church, the Rev. J. E. O’Donohoe,
S. J., officiating.
Mr. Sullivan was engaged in the
dry goods business in Augusta for
many years, having been a member
of the firm of Mullarky and Sulli
van. Later he was the owner and
operator of Harris-Grimes and Com
pany, in Spartanburg, S. C.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs.
Katherine Fogarty Sullivan; one son,
Gregory Sullivan; three daughters,
Misses Elizabeth, Dorothy, and Kath
erine Sullivan.

Miss Kate Murphy, daughter of the
late Michael and Mary Blount Mur
phy, pioneer Atlantans, died early
Monday. February 26, at her home, SO
Tentht Street, N. W., Atlanta, Georgia,
and was buried Wednesday morning
from Sacred Heart Church with a Re
quiem Mass at 10 o’clock, Kev. Father
J. P. Reis, S. M., officiating. Nephews
acted as pallbearers and members of

Upon her graduation from Mount
DeSales Academy, Macon, Georgia,
Miss Murphy became associated with
the Georgia Power Company, and for
a number of years served as secretary
to the late George W. Brine, vice
president. After his retirement she
became secretary to Mr. I. S. Mitchell,
treasurer, which position she held
until her death.
She was a charter member of the
Catholic Club of Business and Pro
fessional Women, and was treasurer
at the time of her death, which office
she had held continuously for a num
ber of years. She was also a charter
member of the Catholic Laymen’s As
sociation of Georgia, and was chair
man of publicity for the Atlanta Dis
trict. The work of the association was
very dear to her heart, and she was
a contributing factor towards its suc
cess.
Miss Murphy was also a member of
the National Council of Catholic
Women, the Altar Society of the Sa
cred Heart Church, and the Woman’s
Committee of the Georgia Power Com
pany.
Making scrap books was her hobby
and she had one of the most interest
ing collections of possibly any indi
vidual in the city, covering her travels
abroad, in Canada, and in this country,
and Alaska; and on subjects of re
ligious, state, and national significance.
She was endowed with a superior
mind and with a spirit of loyal devo
tion to every interest that touched
her life, her church, home, family,
friends, business, and organizations
with which she was affiliated.
Her courageous spirit, gentleness of
bearing, sympathetic understanding,
and unfailing sincerity were happily
blended with a winsome manner and
quiet humor. She had endeared her-
self to hundreds of friends who mourn
her passing.
Surviving are four sisters, Mrs.
James J. Keiley and Mrs. J. B. Egart,
both of Atlanta; Mrs. E. L. Jarvis,
Macon, and Mrs. T. A. Lambert. Nor-

W. G. Murphy, all of Atlanta, and J. P.
Murphy, Ins Angeles; a cousin. Miss
Katherine Murphy, and several nieces
ana nephews.
MRS. AGNES WILLIAMS
DIES IN ATLANTA
ATLANTA, Ga. — Funeral services
for Mrs. Agnes T. Williams were
held from the Sacred Heart Church,
the Rev. John Emmerth. S. M„ offi-
ciatmg. Interment was in the West
View Cemetery.

ATLANTA, Ga. — Funeral services
for Alfred S. Gabriel, who died March
3. were held from St. Anthony’s
Church, the Rev. Nicholas J. Quin
lan officiating.
Mr. Gabriel is survived by his
wife; three daughters, Mrs. W. H.
Harris, of Spartanburg; Miss Lettie
Gabriel and Mrs. H. M. Herrin, and
ffiree sons, J. W., F. E., and Fred S.
Gabriel.
MRS. CHRISTOPHER POPE
IS CLAIMED BY DEATH
ATLANTA, Ga. — Mrs. Mary
Schikan Pt>j>e. a native of Atlanta,
who had spent the 75 years of her
life here, died March 1, funeral ser
vices being held from St. Anthony’s
Church, the Rev, Nicholas Quinlan
officiating.
Mrs. Quinlan is survived by her
husband, Christopher S. Pope; a
daughter, Sister M. Mercedes, of the
Sisters of Mercy, Savannah; two sis
ters, Miss Minnie Schikan and Miss
Hanna Kuhn, of Atlanta; grand
daughter, Mrs. J. R. Grayson, of
Atlanta, and several nieces and
nephews.
ST. CATHERINE’S CIRCLE
PLANS EASTER EGG HUNT
ATLANTA, Ga. — Arrangements
are being made for an Blaster Egg
hunt which will be given at the Sa
cred Heart School and Marist cam
pus on the Tuesday after Easter by
the St. Catherine’s Circle, Sacred
Heart Altar Society.
At a recent meeting the Circle elec
ted the following new officers: Mrs.

was former Vicar Choral of St Asaph,
England, lias been received into die
Church, From 1926 until he resigned
in 1939, he was vicar of Ruabon,
Wales.

AUGUSTA, Ga.— Anna Laura Ken-
ny, 15-year-old student at Mt. St. Jo
seph Academy, has been adjudged
local winner of the nationwide Ameri
canism contest sponsored by The Au
gusta Chronicle in cooperation with
the ladies' auxiliary to the Veterans
of Foreign Wars.
Miss Kenny's essay, selected as the
best of a large number submitted by
Augusta and Richmond County high
school students, will be sent to At
lanta and placed in competition with
‘The Benefits of Democracy 1 ' was
the title of the essay submitted by
Miss Kenny, who is the daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. E. P. Kenny, of 610 Tut
tle Street.
