ROCK HILL, S. C.
just a few years ago a priest came oc
casionally to say Mass, stands today
as the center of Catholic life for a
large part of South Carolina. Yet its
first modest chapel was erected in 1920
by the Rev. William Tobin.
Since then the Catholic Church has
made great strides in Rock Hill. Since
the Oratorian Fathers assumed the re
sponsibility for this territory in 1934
adequate facilities for worship have
been provided for an increasing lum
ber of parishioners at Rock Hill, and
for the Catholics in the mission sta
tions of Chester, Strother, Dawkins,
Fort Mill, Winnsboro, Clover, Great
Falls, York, Monticello, Whitmire.
Blair and Lancaster. A modern and
complete hospital, with 60 beds, and a
training school for boys have been es
tablished at Rock Hill.
Until 1934 the parish was adminis
tered to by secular priests and priests
of the Society of Jesus, among whom
were the Rev. Joseph Farrell. S.J..
and the Rev. P. A. Ryan. S.J. In 1934
Pope Pius confided to the Jesuits of
the New Orleans Province a mission
territory in the Philippine Islands,
and at their request they were re
lieved of the care of Rock Hill and
adjacent territory.
At the invitation of the Most Rev.
Emmet M. Walsh, D.D., Bishop of
Charleston, the Rev. Paul Hatch, lot-
ed pulpit orator, and a member of
the Congregation of the Oratory,
came from New York to investigate
the possibilities at Rock Hill, and in
August, 1934, the Oratory of St. Phil
ip Neri was established. Father Er
nest Musial, of Leipsiz, Germany, re
mained at Rock Hill for a year, when
Father Ernest was recalled to Berlin,
to organize an Oratory thzre.
It was the wish of St. Philip Neri,
who instituted the Oratorians, to
which order Cardinal Newman be
longed, that the order would devote
its efforts to the alleviation of the
sick and toward the formation of
Christian character in young boys.
It was to these two principles hat
the Oratorians in Rock Hill dedicat
ed themselves. A hospital, founded
by Dr. W. W. Fennell, and known
as the Fennell Infirmary was pur
chased, and within a year of their
coming the hospital, to serve the ick
and poor of the community, was
opened with Sisters of the Third Or
der of St. Francis in charge.
Meanwhile the Fathers had erected
a Oratory for the use of the priests
and brothers and for the instruction
of young boys, and the hospital and
Oratory buildings were dedicated : n
September. 1935.
With fifteen nursing Sisters on its
active staff the hospital is rendering
a service to a section of South Caro
lina which has no other hospital. It
includes in its facilities a colored
wing and a day nursery.
The Oratory provides a school for
boys who otherwise would be unable
to secure any but the most elemen
tary education. Faber Hall houses
the grammar grade division, a dormi
tory, and other rooms. Newman Hall,
at the Oratory, provides class-rooms
for high school students. In this Ora-
