Death of John Canty
Loss to Savannah
Former Alderman Was for
> Many Years Leader in Old
First Ward
SAVANNAH, Ga. — The passing
of John Francis Canty, Sr., former
city alderman, removed one who had
for many years been a colorful fig
ure in the political affairs of Savan
nah.
From 1900 to 1907, during the Her
man Myers administration. Mr. Canty
represented the old First Ward, which
included the Yamacraw section of the
city, as a member of the Board of Al
dermen. His.name appears on the
marble tablet placed in the City Hall
to commemorate its erection during
his term as a member of the govern
ing body of the city.
For nearly a half-century. Mr. Can
ty was engaged in the wheelwright
and blacksmith business, retiring
some years ago to accept a position
with the motor equipment division of
the Savannah Police Department. He
was a charter member of the Savan
nah Aerie of Eagles, the second mem
ber from Georgia of the Fourth De
gree of the Knights of Columbus, and
a member of the Irish Jasper Greens.
He frequently presided over Recor
der’s Court and some of his friends
continued until his death to greet
him with the honorary title of
“Judge”.
Mr. Canty is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Elizabeth Fitzgerald Canty;
three daughters, Sister Mary Bride,
R. S. M.; Mrs. Edward A. Brennan,
and Mrs. Frank Nesbitt, Pawtucket,
R. I.; five sons, Thomas J.~ Canty,
harbor master of Savannah; John F.
Canty, Jr.. W. I. Canty, Joseph
Aloysius Canty and Robert Reid
Canty; four grandchildren and a
number of nieces and nephews.

Fort Benning Boy Wins
High Boy Scout Honor
FORT BENNING, Ga. — Attainment
in fifteen months of the highest scout
rank, that of Eagle Scout, an accom-
plisment seldom equalled, is the
proud achievement of thirteen-year-
old Burt Brennan, son of Major and
Mrs. Francis M. Brennan, members
of the Catholic contingent at Fort
Benning.
At the time of his promotion young
Brennan had twenty-five merit bad
ges, four more than is required for
promotion to the rank of Eagle Scout.
He is a member of Fort Benning
Troop Number 11, of which Lieut.
Harold N. Moorman, of the 29th In
fantry, is scoutmaster.
Our Library-
suggested reading for those who
are interested in general sociology
and welfare work, especially, in
Catholic Social Reconstruction, as
embodied in the Social encyclicals:
“Freedom Under God”, by Fulton
J. Shean. Monsignor Sheen in keen
logical analysis disproves the false
interpretation of liberty that is ad
vanced by materialistic capitalism
and Communism. He proves that
true liberty can come only from “Re
ligious belief and proper moral out
look.”
“Three Theories, of Society”, by P.
H. Furfey; “Reorganization of Social
Economy”, by Nell-Breuning; “Crea
tive Revolution”; by J. F. Prince;
“Sorrow Built a Bridge”, by K. Bur
ton; “The Pope's Plan for Social Re
construction”, by Charles Breuhl;
“Christian Social Reconstruction”, by
Don Virgil Muchel; “The Church and
Labor”, by John A. Ryan and Jo
seph Husslein, S. J.: “Survey of So
ciology”, by Eva Ross; “Man and
