Parish Groups Are Active
at St. Peter’s, Columbia
Organizations Include St. Peter’s Aid Society, Holy Name
Society, Catholic Business Women’s Club, Catholic
Youth Council, and Sodality of Our Blessed Lady

COLUMBIA. S. C.. — Columbia’s
oldest parish, that of St. Peter’s, has
at its present pastor the Rev. Martin
C. Murphy, with the Rev. Timothy
McGrath and the Rev. Thomas J.
O Shaughnessy, as assistants. St. Pat
rick’s Chapel, at Olympia Village, is
served by the priests at St. Peter’s.
The parish organizations cover a
wide variety of service.
SODALITY OF OUR LADY
ST. PETER’S PARISH
The Sodality of St. Peter’s Church,
Columbia, was organized about 1895,
bv the late Rev. Thomas Heagerty.
Its purpose is to encourage devotion
to the Blessed Virgin Marv by hav
ing its members receive Holy Com-
Si union in a body on the third Sun
day of every month, and to hold
regular meetings to formulate a pro
gram for visitation of the sick, and
other expressions of charity.
Through the years since its organi
zation the sodality has continued ac
tively and has a present membership
of 118. The present officers are:
Miss Hannah Roche, president; Miss
Mamie Cantwell, vice-president; Mrs.
.7. W. Bond, secretary; Mrs. Ruth
Long, treasurer. The spiritual direc
tor is the Rev. T J. McGrath.
ST. PETER’S PARISH HAS
CATHOLIC YOUTH COUNCIL
The Catholic Youth Councils were
organized in the State of South
Carolina during February of 1939, by
Miss Anna Rose Kimple, a member
of the Executive Board of the Na
tional C. Y. C. who at the request of
the Most Rev. Emmet M. Walsh,
Bishop of Charleston organized these
clubs in the state. The Catholic
Youth Council has a three-fold pur
pose—social, cultural and spiritual
and has two groups, one for the girls
in high school, and the other for girls
out of school.
The St. Peter’s C. V. C. has a
membership of about thirty and the
following officers:
Miss Eleanor Bultman, president;
Miss Clare Driggers, vice-president;
Miss Mary Boseberry, secretary;
Miss Grace Serio, treasurer; Miss
Ann Roseberry, corresponding secre
tary.

erend Father Martin C. Murphy,
pastor of St. Peter’s Church, issued
a call to all business women of the
Parish to attend a meeting for the
purpose of organizing them into a
club for the promotion of social in
tercourse among such members of
the Parish. This call was so well re
ceived that the Club was immediate
ly organized and is now composed of
a large majority of the business and
professional women of the city from
both parishes, St. Peter’s and St.
Francis de Sales. Since organization
the club has grown in membership
and enthusiasm.
An effort is made to assist finan
cially and in any other way when an
opportunity arises to the pastors of
the respective churches, or to the
Sisters of the various religious orders
in the city. The Club also maintains
a circulating library at Providence
Hospital for use of all patients. This
organization has filled a long-felt
need in promoting acquaintance and
maintaining a cordial relationship
among the Catholic women of all
parishes in the city.
The officers of the Club for the
current year are: Miss Helen Partin,
president; Miss Hannah Roche, vice
president; Miss Nell Brown, secre
tary-treasurer.
ST. PETER’S AID SOCIETY
ORGANIZED FIFTY YEARS AGO
St. Peter’s Aid Society ( originally
St. Peter’s Benevolent Society, has
been in existence for over fifty years.
The first officers in the society were:
Mrs. E. J Brennan, Sr.. Mrs- William
Ford, Mrs. Margaret Roche.
After the death of Father Hegarty.
Father Nicholas Murphy reorganized
the society and named it St. Peter’s
St. Peter’s Church, Columbia, S. C.
Very Rev. Martin C. Murphy is the present pastor of St. Peter’s Church, Columbia, which was erected in
1906 during the pastorate of the beloved Father Thomas G. Hegarty.
Aid Society and for several years af
ter, under the able management of
Mrs. J. J. Roberts, president, the so
ciety cared for the poor and needy.
The organization ’ strictly for char
ity and welfare work. The present of
ficers are: Mrs. A. A. Craig, president;
Mrs. Wesley Edgar, vice president;
Mrs. E- A. Jenkins, secretary; Mrs-
Charles Hansen, treasurer.
HOLY NAME SOCIETY
ST. PETER’S PARISH
St. Peter’s Holy Name Society, Co
lumbia, S. C.. dates back to when the
Most Rev. Thomas J. Haggerty was
Fastor of St. Peters.
The society, at that time, had a
comparatively small membership but
during the past 10 years several mis
sions were held at St. Peter’s and at
each mission quite a number of men
joined the society which has grown
to a membership of approximately
fifty members.
During the past year a collection
was taken up on the second Sunday
of each month when the members
went to Holy Communion to pur
chase Holy Name Badges, these bad
ges were ordered and were first worn
on the second Sunday of January,
1940.
The officers of St. Peter’s Holy
Name Society are contemplating
having some social gatherings in the
future and it is hoped that the mem-
bereship will increase to one hun
dred members within the next year.
The officers are Bernard J. Jum
per, President; Louis Bond, Vice
President; and Paul Hamburger, Sec
retary-Treasurer: with the Rev. M.
C. Murphy, spiritual director.
