St. Francis de Sales Parish
Plans to Erect a New Church
Rev. Thomas J. Mackin Is
Pastor of Flourishing
Parish in Shandon

COLUMBIA, S. C.—St. Francise de
Sales Church, of" which the Rev.
j.iomas J. Mackin is pastor, serves a
flourishing parish in South Carolina’s
capital city.
Established in 1920, by the Rev.
Louis Jacquier, of the Oblate Fathers
of St. Francis de Sal , the parish
constructed its present church from
materials which had been used in
the erection of one of the Knights
cl Columbus buildings at Camp Jack-
son, wh : ch weretabandoned at the end
of the World War-
Original plans which were submit
ted for a new church are now being
revised, and it is the hope of the
pastor and his parishioners that the
near future will see ground being
broken for the erection of a hand
some new edifice-
Father Jacquier served as pastor
of Columbia’s junior parish for three
years, being succeeded by ‘he Rev.
Martin C. Murphy, now pastor of St.
Peter’s Church. The next pastor at
St. Francis de Sales was the Rev.
Daniel O'Brien, who was obliged to
retire in 1936 on account of his
health. The Rev. Edmund Burke then
acted as administrator until the pres
ent pastor, Father Mackin. was trans
ferred to St. Francis de Sales from
St Paul’s Church, in Spartanburg.
St Francis de Sales is located m
that section of Columbia that _ .is
known as Shandon, which is within
the city limits, but about three miles
from the business district of the

growth of the city, which should as
sure a flourishing future to the parish.
Many new homes have been built
in this part of the city, and a parish
school is being contemplated.
Recently the interior of the church
was re-arranged and improved under
the supervision of its pastor, who is
regarded as being an authority of
liturigcal ornamentaiton and vest
ments. ,
Father Mackin is one of the most
bclov pastors in the Diocese of
Charleston, which he has served in
Charleston, Georgetown, Parris Island,
Beaufort, Yonge’s Island, Anderson,
Blackville, Barnwell, Bamberg,
Springfield, Camden, Spartanburg
and on the missions.
He is a native of Chicago, and was
educated at Mt- Carmel Parochial
School, St Vincent’s High School,
Evanston Academy, Northwestern
University Preparatory School, the
College of Science at the Catholic
University of America, and at the
Ur,: ersi'v of Notre Dame, where he
was a fellow student of Bishop John
F. O’Hara and Knute Rockne. He
made his theological study at St.
Mary’s Seminary, Baltimore, and was
ordained to the priesthood in 1918.
Father Mackin is well known
throughout the State of South Caro
lina. and is highly regarded and
esteemed', not only by members of
the Catholic Church, but by a host
of non-Catho-c citizens who cherish
his friendship.

JOINS CANADIAN NAVY

“Damien, the Leper,” Is
Commissioned Lieutenant

ST JOHN, N. B.—John Farrow,
well-known Catholic writer and mo
tion picture director anJ now a lieu
tenant in the Canadian navy, is on
duty guarding the Canadian Atlantic
coast- He has temporarily given up
writing and directing moving pictures,
but is continuing work on his book,
“History of the Popes”. He started
this just before “disappearing” from
Hollywood recently, and re-appearing
in Eastern Canada in a navy uni
form.
Mr. Farrow will work on his book
in spare time from his naval duties.
At the completion of the war, he
plans to return to Hollywood and
resume writing and directing. His
wife. Maureen O’Sullivan, film star,
and their baby, will join Lieutenant
Farrow as soon as she finishes a
picture committment in Hollywood.
She will bring the child, mostly by
air to Halifax, base of Canaian Na
val operations.
Lieutenant Farrow, a native of
Norfoljt, England, lived in Australia
before settling in Hollywood about
15 years ago. His first book,
"Damien, the Leper”, based on the
life of Father Damien, Apostle to
the Lepers of Molokai, was published
last year. His Holiness Pope Pius
XII decorated Lieutenant Farrow as
«• token of appreciation for the book.

ed eight films and also written the
scenarios himself or in collaboration
with others.

PARISH ORGANIZATIONS
Varied and Extensive Acti
vity in Columbia Parish
COLUMBIA, S. C. — Extensive,
and in various forms, is the activity
of the parishioners of St. Francis de
Sales Church. Under the direction of
the Rev. Thomas Mackin, pastor, the
men, women, and children of the pa
rish are well organized and are able
to boast of flourishing groups in the
parish.
Officers of the Holy Name Society
are J. F. Casey, president; P. H. Mor
gan, vice presirent; and Joseph Keel
er ,secretary-treasurer. The officers
of the Boys’ Club are Lucius Jumper,
president; R. Owings, vice-president;
and J. Dieter, secretary-treasurer.
Mrs. A. A. Cosby is president of the
Parent-Teacher Asosciation, with
Mrs. George Collins, as treasurer.
J. F. Casey heads the National
Council of Catholic Men, Mrs. Anton
Bohies the Sodality of Our Lady, and
Norbert Theodore is leader of the
Discussion Club.
Mrs. George Collins is president of
the Council of Catholic Women, with
Mrs. P. H. Morgan, secretary. Mrs.
John Swygert, a member of the par
ish is president of the Columbia Dean
ery, N. C. C. W., and a vice-president
of the State Council.
St. Francis de Sales choir is upcler
the direction of Joseph O'Shea, with
Mrs. Anton Behles, organist, and
Mrs. C. Joseph Niggel, organist emer
itus. The Acolyte Guild includes in
its membership thirty-four young
men and boys. Mary Virginia Wells
heads the Girls’ Club, with Mary
Jumper, as secretary. * •
There are thirty active members in
the Altar Society, which is one of the
most efficient groups in the parish.
The newly elected officers are Mrs.
Charles Kayes, president; Mrs. Fred
Duval, vice-president; Mrs. B. B*
Bellinger, secretary; and Mrs. Bur
gess Bultman, treasurer. These offi
cers succeeded Mrs. P. H. Morgan,
Mrs. George Collins, Mrs. W. J. Mc
Cormack, and Mrs. B. B. Bellinger,
who have served faithfully the past
two years as president, vice-presi
dent .secretary, and treasurer, re
spectively.
Miss Eleanor Cantwell, a member
of the parish, holds the office of sec
retary of the Diocesan Council of
Catholic Women.

ELECTS OFFICERS
F. X. Profumo Succeeds
Louis C. Kunze as President
COLUMBUS, Ga. — At a meeting
of the Columbus Branch of the Cath
olic Laymen's Association of Georgia,
held at the Catholic Club House on
the evening of Sunday. April 14, F.
X. Profumo was elected president of
the local branch, succeeding Louis C.'
Kunze, who has headed the members
of the association here for a number
of years.
Other officers elected were: Mrs.
Lucile Kennon, vice-president: Mrs.
.Margaret Bryne, secretary; and W. J.
Weaver, treasurer.
Mr. Kunze presided at the meeting
which was addressed by Bernard J.
Kane, of Atlanta, vice-president of
the State Association; Estes Doremus.

Hugh Kinchley. of Augusta, execu
tive secretary.
The Rev. Dan McCarthy, pastor of
Holy Family Church, invoked the Di
vine blessirig on the meeting, and
also made a few remarks, as did rhe
Rev. Henry A. Schonhardt, who was
visiting in Columbus.
