Elects 1940 Officers

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Officers of the
Eucharistic League of the Sacred
Heart Church elected for the year,
1940. include Mrs. Mary Calhoun,
president; Mrs. Arthur Pierce, vice-
president; Mrs. John Curran, recor
ding secretary; Mrs. Julian Wingo,
corresponding secretary; Miss Kate
Latham, treasurer.
The Committee in charge of the
sanctuary at the Sacred Heart
Church consists of Miss Kate La
tham, Mrs. Arthur Pierce, Mrs. Wil
liam Sexton, and Mrs. Frieda Petit.
The funds are used for the pur
pose of supplying the church with
vestments, and for adorning the al
tars, is raised through various social
activities, and the society can boast
of having raised an average of one
thousand dollars a year for the past
ten years.
Members of the Eucharistic League
act as a guard of honor when the
Blessed Sacrament is exposed in the
church.

SAVANNAH, Ga. — The initial is
sue of “The Boy Crusader ’, a quar
terly published by the boys of St.
Thomas Vocational School, has made
its appearance.
The publication contains items of
interest about St. Thomas’s school
and the Benedictine College, and the
first issue was dedicated to the Most
Reverend Gerald P. O'Hara, D. D., J.
U. D. whose picture appears on the
front page.

Theatre Invites Sisters to
Private Showing of March
of Time Film
AUGUSTA. Ga. — Through the
courtesy of Frank J. Miller, Vice-
President of Augusta Amusements,
Inc., and General Manager of the five
theatres operated by that company
in Augusta; Jack Johannsen, Mana
ger of the Miller Theatre; and
John Thornton, manager of the Rialto
Theatre: the Sisters of Mercy, the Sis
ters of St. Joseph, and the Francis
can Sisters, from the three convents
in Augusta, were guests at a special
private presentation of the March of
Time film, “The Vatican of Pius XII”.
Because the first showing of the
film in Augusta was during tire Len
ten season, it was booked for a return
engagement at the Rialto Theatre on
April 3 and 4.
In order that the Sisters might
have an opportunity of inspecting
the new Miller Theatre, one of the
most magnificent theatres in the
South Manager Johannsen arrang
ed to have the film shown upon the
screen of the Miller Theatre instead
of at the Rialto where the picture
was being shown to the public. In
order not to conflict with the regular
program at the theatre, an early mor
ning matinee was given for the Sis
ters.
St. Benedict’s. Savannah,
Observes Titular Feast

SAVANNAH. Ga.—Sunday, April 21,
the feast of St. Benedict the Moor
was celebrated at St- Benedict’s
Church, the Most Rev. Gerald P.
O'Hara, Bishop of Savannah-Atlanta
presiding in the sanctuary at a Sol
emn High Mass, which was celebrated
by the Very Rev. Ignatius Lissner.
provincial of the Society of African
Missions, with the Rev. Michael
Doona and the Rev. A. Ramstein. S.
M. A-, as deacon and sub-deacon. The
sermon was delivered by the Rev. Fa
ther Benedict, O. S. B., principal of
Benedictine College.
Immediately after Mass Bishop
O’Hara administered Confirmation to
a class of children and adults. Assist
ing Bishop O'Hara were the Rev-
Joseph Kavanagh, and the Rev. Gus
tav Obrecht, pastor of St. Benedict’s
Church.
Rodolph Kratina Directs
Augusta Choral Recital
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Mr. Rudolph
Kratina, a member of the choir of the
Sacred Heart Church here, directed
the chorus of the Augusta Civic Mu
sic Club in an Easter recital given at
the Gertrude Herbert Institute of
Art.
Mr. Kratina was bass soloist with
the Dresden Royal Opera for many
years, cello soloist with the Imperial
Opera of Berlin, and after the World
War. celloist with the Dresden Roy
al Opera. He was also' celloist with
the Rath Trio, a group of instrumen
talists who were noted throughout
Europe. He also taught in ‘Dresden
and has done oratorio work.
For several years Mr. Kratina, and
his wife, who was Miss Marguerite
Pressley, of Augusta, have made
their home here. Mrs. Kratina is the
daughter of Mr. Charles P. Pressley,
who for a number of years was

Miss Mary Haverty
Elected a Director

ATLANTA, Ga.—The Haverty Fur
niture Company has elected to its
board of directors Miss Mary E. Hav
erty, who will fill the place left va
cant by the death of her father, J.
J. Haverty. founder and for many
years president of the company.
Miss Haverty, like her father, is
deeptv interested in art, in the work
o f Atlanta Museum of Art, and is ac
tive in the work of the parish of the
Cathedral of Christ the King.
Bishop O'Hara Speaks
to Savannah N. C. C. W.
SAVANNAH, Ga. — South Ameri
ca was the subject of an interesting
talk given, by the Most Rev. Gerald
P. O'Hara, Bishop of Savannah-At
lanta, before the Savannah Deanery,
National Council of Catholic Wom
en. on the evening of April 9.
Bishop O'Hara told of the pictu
resque beauty of the country and
spoke on the impressions he gained
of the people and places he had visit
ed while on his recent trip with Car
dinal Dougherty. Thomas F. Walsh,
Jr., presented the bishop to the au
dience, and Mrs. Joseph E. Kelly,
presedent of the deanery, presided.
At the meeting of the Catholic Wo
men’s Club, which preceded the
deanery session, Mrs. H. T. Wilson
made a report on the diocesan con
ference held in Atlanta. Mrs. Charles
F. Powers called for volunteers to
aid in the "Mile of Dimes" cam
paign to be launched in May, and
Miss Sally Battle and Mrs. Dorothy
Cope were admitted to membership.
