REV. FATHER KENNEDY
(Special to The Bulletin)
ATHENS. Ga.—St. Joseph’s Church,
of which the Rev. J. J. Kennedy is
now the pastor, w r as dedicated in 1913.
In 1873, Bishop Gross, of Savan
nah. with the Rev. James O'Brien,
of Washington, Ga., came to Athens
for the purpose of securing a loca
tion for a boys’ orphanage. Failing
in their purpose, they were persuad
ed by the ten men, of the Catholic
population of Athens at that time, to
buy the present site for a church. E>r.
Bloomfield, an Episcopalian, contrib
uted the first one hundred dollars.
On the property acquired stood an
old building which at one time had
been the first Law School of the
University of Georgia. In this an
tique building Robert Toombs, Alex
ander H. Stephens, and General Tbos.
R. R. Cobb met and decided that
Georgia should secede from the union.
The first Supreme Court of Geor
gia had convened in it. After ceasing
to be the Law School of the Uni
versity it was used for a school for
boys.
It was in this building that Athens
Catholics heard Mass for many years,
until the late Right Rev. Monsignor
H. F. Clark, was assigned as pastor,
and the present church was complet
ed.
The Rev. James E. King, succeeded
Father Clark as pastor of St. Joseph’s
Church, being followed by the Rev.
Harold Barr, and the present pastor.
The parish has a very active Holy
Name Society, headed by Dr. T. H.
McHatton, of the faculty of the Col
lege of Agriculture of the' University
of Georgia.
Mrs. M. F. Costa, assisted by Mrs.
John Morris, heads the parish Altar
Society, and the parish has a Council
of Catholic Women.
At the University of Georgia great
things are being accomplished by the
Newman Club, which is composed of
Catholic students at the University.
Twenty of the members resided at
the Club House, which is the center
of club activity. Several of the club
members are from other states, some
of the resident members being from
New York, New Jersey, Florida and
Alabama.
The Newman Club’s activities are
religious, social, and cultural. Its
president is Joseph Heffernan, of Au
gusta. During the current year 'he
club has sponsored lectures by the
Most Rev. Gerald P. O'Hara, Bishop
of Savannah-Atlanta. Dr. McHatton,
Richard Reid and Father Kennedy.
Last fall the visit of the Holy Cross
College football team to Athens was
the occasion of a gala day at the
Newman Club House, where the New
Englanders and a host of visitors
were entertained.
A number of students at the Uni
versity, about half of them being non-
Catliolics, make their home at St.
Joseph’s Rectory during the school
year.
IN HIS ADDRESS to youth lead
ers at the Regional Conference of the
National Council of Catholic Women
in Birmingham, the Most Rev. Rich
ard O. Gerow, Bishop of Natchez,
emphasized the necessity of safe
guarding the faith and Christian
morality of our youth against the
widespread contagion of today.
