South’s Finest Hospitals
ATLANTA, Ga. — St. Josephs
Hospital marked the sixtieth anni
versary of its establishment on May

It was in 1880 that two Sisters of
Mercy came from Savannah, and
with the aid of Father James O'Brien,
pastor of the Immaculate Conception
Church, bought an old residence and
a one-acre lot at Collins and Baker
streets, and opened the Atlanta Hos
pital that is now St. Joseph’s Infir
mary. _ ,
Today the hospital is regarded as
one of the best in the South. It has
150 beds and during last year re
ceived 4.448 patients, many of them
in the Diagnostic Out-Patient Clinic,
set up to serve the rural poor.
Sister Cecilia, who had done such
wonderful work in Savannah during
the yellow-fever epidemic was in
charge of St. Joseph’s when it open

O’Brien, who came to Atlanta from
New York; Dr- A. W. Calhoun, the
noted eye and ear specialist; Dr. iJ. J.

Out-Patient Department
Two years ago St. Joseph s Infirm
ary established a new Diagnostic Out-
Patient Department to serve the rural
poor who lack such facilities in their
own communities, and it has been of
great aid to country doctors in caring
for the needy sick.
The clinic is equipped completely
with modern aids in surgical and
medical science and is a contribution
to the happiness and well being of
the people of North Georgia that can
not be over-estimated. It includes
departments of medicine, surgery,
gynecology, and obstetrics, with a
consulting staff on orthopedics, eye,
ear, nose and throat, cardiology, neu
rology, dentistry, and orology. Splen-
idly equipped X-ray and clinical lab-
oratories are located on the ground
floor, their facilities being available
for the Out-Patient Department as
w r ell as for patients in the infirmary.
