One of the leading educational institutions in the South is St. Genevieve's-of-the-Pines,' Asheville, which for
More than a generation has been conducted by the Sisters of Christian Education. It includes an academy and a
Junior college for girls, and a grade school for girls and boys. Graduates of the academy and junior college are
found in every section of the United States. Mother A. Foret is the Superior, and the Rev. Walter Higgins has re
cently been appointed chaplain. The Sisters also conduct the "Little Flower" summer camp in the mountains
wear Hendersonville.

Laymen’s Retreat
Held At Nazareth
RALEIGH. N. C—The ninth an
nual Laymen’s Retreat at Nazareth,
which ended June 17th, was conduct
ed by Father Horne of the Chicago
Mission Band.

St. Lawrence Church, Asheville
Famed as a gem of ecclesiasteal art, St. Lawrence’s churcu, Asucvme,
was consecrated in 1929, the sermon at the consecration service being deliver
ed by Cardinal Gibbons. The edifice was designed by the renowned Rafael
Guastavine. a Spanish architest, brought to Asheville by the Vanderbilts,
who gave his services without compensation, and who is buried under one
of the chapels. The Rev. Louis J. Boor is the pastor, and the Rev. James H.
King has recently been named his assistant The handsome rectory, one of
the finest in the South, was built by the present pastor. The church and
rectory are located in the heart of the city.

Following the Retreat ceremonies,
a business meeting of the North Caro
lina Catholic Laymen's Retreat As
sociation. resulted in the following
officers: John Eck. of Gastonia,
president; George L. Gettier, Char-
lottle, Western vice-president; P. B.
Edelen, Raleigh, eastern vice-presi
dent; John R. AlcDaid, Jr., Gastonia,
secretary-treasurer. E. J. Gallagher
of Salisbury is the retiring presi
dent. The members of the association
decided to hold two Retreats next
year,one at Belmont Abbey, Belmont,
for western members and one at
Nazareth, for Eastern members.
CATHOUC STUDENT HONORED
AT WAKE FOREST SCHOOL
WAKE FOREST. N. C. — Miss Sel
ma Ann Harris, the onlv Catholic in
a graduating class of thirty-five at
the Wake Forest Hi ah School, de
livered the valedictory at the com
mencement exercises at which dip
lomas were awarded to the class of
1940.
Miss Harris is the daughter of Mrs.
Jack Harris, and the granddaughter
of James G. Mehegan.

CATHEDRAL HIGH SCHOOL
RALEIGH, N. C. — The largest
class in the history of the Cathedral
Latin High School received diplomas
at the annual commencement exer
cises held here May 31, from >he
Most Reverend Eugene J. McGuin-
ness. D.D., Bishop of Raleigh, who
presided.
Mr. Romeo Lefort, B.S.. Assistant
Dean of State College, delivered the
address to the graduates. Alfred Odo
Frick was valedictorian and John
Keyes Wolff, salutatoiian.

The Rev. Arthur J. Racette is pastor of St. Joan of Arc Church, the
second parish to be established in Asheville. Sisters of Christian Education
conduct the pariochial school which has an enrollment of more than a hund
red pupils.
Asheville's colored Catholics, are served by (lie Fransican Fathers, the
Rev. Ronald Scott, O. F. M.. being pastor, with the Rev. Nathaniel McDonald,
O. F. M., and the Rev. Wilfred Hughes. O. F. ML, assistants. There is a
parochial school for colored children, conducted by the Franciscan Sisters.

CHARLOTTE. N. C. — The fifth
annual North Carolina State Confer
ence of the Catholic Daughters of
America held in Charlotte, began
■with solemn pontifical Mass at St.
Patrick’s Church. The Mass v&s cel
ebrated by the Most Rev. Eugene J.
McGuinness, of Raleigh, assisted by
the Rev. J. Lennox Federal, arch
priest; Rev. Augustine J. Petranek."C.
S. S. R.. and Rev. Maurice McDon
nell, O. S. B„ deacons of honor; Rev.
Francer J. Bader. C. S. S. R.. deacon
of Mass; Rev. William E. Fearson,
sub-deacon: Rev. William McLaugh
lin, master of ceremonies: Rev. Philip

of ceremonies.
The children of O’Donoghue School
sang the Mass and the Junior Cath
olic Daughters acted as ushers for
the visiting delegates. The sermon
was delivered by the Rev. F. J. Bader,
C. SS. R.
Immediately after the Mass regis
tration was held at the Woman’s
Club and then luncheon was served.
Bishop McGuinness delivered the in
vocation and gave the benediction.
Mrs. Frank Burke. Grand Regent of
the hostess Court, introduced Father
Maurice McDonald, O. S. B.. who
gave the address of welcome.
The conference itself convened at
3 o’clock. Miss Elizabeth Bullard, of
Wilmington, Territorial Deputy, pre
sided. Reports were made by Grand
Regents and Junior Counselors of the
seven Senior Courts and three Junior
Courts of the state.
Bishop McGuinness addressed the
delegates, and the presentation of a
spiritual bouquet and a substantial
check from the combined courts on
the occasion of the 25th anniversary
of his ordination, was made.
Rev. Robert MacMillan. State Chap
lain of the Catholic Daughters of Am
erica, included in his remarks the
value of the retreat held annually
at Sacred Heart College at Belmont
the first week in September, the im
portance of increasing the member
ship of the organization, and empha
sized the need for unison of prayer
for peace.
Father MacMillan was presented a
traveling bag in gratitude for
strengthening the ties of unity bind
ing the Courts of Catholic Daughters
of North Carolina.

brought greetings and expressions of
inspiration from the national organ
ization.

vitation for the sixtli annual conven

After the Conference new officers
of the local Court were installed by
the Territorial Deputy, Miss Elizabeth
