C. W. C. News Service) MEXICO CITY — A remarkable and wholly unexpected authorized statement by General Manuel Avila Camacho, who has been declared by the Mexican Congress as the next President of Mexico, succeeding La- zaro Cardenas, has stirred intense discussion throughout political circles in this country. Four striking assertions in General Camacho’s statement are: First, that he is a Cathoilc be liever, by origin and moral sentiment. Second, that Communists will not take part in his government and, in fact, will wane because their princi ples are opposed to the national senti ment. Third, that he is not a Socialist, but a believer in democracy, liberty and economic well - being. Fourth, that Lombardo Toledano, powerful Mexican labor leader often accused of being a Communist, will not be a “collaborator” in the Cama cho Gevernment. On all these counts, General Cama cho’s statement is extraordinary. In the presidential election campaign, it was General Almazon, opponent of , General Camacho, who stressed as one of the planks in his platform that under him justice would be done the Catholic Church. Furthermore, Cam acho, a candidate of the Mexican Rev olutionary Party, was supported by President Cardenas, who had vigo rously pushed laws unfavorable to the Catholic Church. It is also to be recalled that the charge was frequently made against Cardenas that he included Commu nists in his government and that such radical steps as the promotion of So cialistic teaching in the official school curriculum were taken in his re gime. . REV. RUSSELL I. WILBUR, con vert to Catholicism, close friend of President Theodore Roosevelt, and a nationally-known authority on social work and social problems died in St. Louis, August 24- Father Wilbur was deeply interested in social problems even as a stu dent for the Protestant Episcopal ministry.
