ESSAY CONTEST AWARD
SVANNAH, Ga.— First prize in
the essay contest on the subject of
Eli Whitney and his cotton gin, held
in connection with observance 1 of
“Eli Whitney Day’' here on October
7, was won by Eugene Patrick Pow
ers. a clerk with the Savannah Bank
and Trust Company.

AUGUSTA, Ga.,—Alvin M. McAu
liffe, member of the real estate firm
of Lockhart and McAuliffe, and a
trustee of the University Hospital,
has been named as a member of the
selective service board of Richmond
County by Goverenor E. D. Rivers.
Mr. McAuliffe, who is auditor of
the Catholic Laymen's Association of
Georgia, is the only Catholic among
the fifteen members of the board in
Augusta.
Heart Church, has been unveiled in
the lobby of the parish school, by
Miss Donna O'Shell, daughter of the
artist, and a pupil at the school.
Mrs. O’Shell has won praise for her
portrait work. The portrait of His
Holiness is an excellent copy of the
familiar picture of him with his hand
raised in benediction.

Council, Knights of Columbus, on
October 10, the new officers of the
council, which is headed by James B.

was elected recording seeertary to

Mary’s-on-the-Hill Church, is chap
lain of the council.
