WINSTON-SALEM, N. C. — Al
though less than a year old, Santa
Maria Council, Knights of Colum
bus, in Winston-Salem, took an
outstanding part in the celebration
of the 60th Anniversary of the
founding of the K. of C.
Principal features of the ob
servance by the local council in
cluded a corporate Communion
and breakfast at High Point, a spe
cial founders’ meeting, the initia
tion of a large class of new mem
bers, and the presentation of a ra
dio program, “Sixty Crowded
Years”, over Station WSJS.
The major degrees of the K. of
C. were conferred on a class of ap
proximately 100 candidates by
Santa Maria -Council on Sunday,
March 29, at the Masonic Temple
here. The ceremonial being fol
lowed by a banquet in the club-
rooms of St. Leo's Church.
The ceremonial, which was the
first held by the local Knights
since Santa Maria Council was es
tablished on April 27, 1941, was
conducted under the direction of
State Deputy Anthony Redmond,
from Asheville, with a degree team
from Charlotte in charge of the
major degree work. Officers of
the Asheville and Greensboro
Councils exemplified the first and
second degrees, and District Dep
uty Dennis Dunn, of Charlotte, as
sisted in the exemplification of the
third degree.
The delegation of members of
the Order and candidates from
Asheville w'ere headed by State
Deputy Redmond, while Francis C.
Markwalter, grand knight of Char
lotte Council, headed the delega
tion of candidates and members
from that city.
Dr. Joseph A. Kosterman, grand
knight of Fayetteville Council,
brought a number of candidates
from Fayetteville and Lumberton,
and Oscar C. Allen, grand knight,
and William McCormick, chancel
lor, both of Greensboro, brought a
group of members and candidates
from that place.
Following the ceremonial a ban
quet was served by the St. Theresa
Guild of St. Leo's Church in the
parish club rooms. The Rev.
Michael J. Begley, pastor of St.
Leo's Church, and visiting offi
cials were speakers at the ban
quet.

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Immedi
ately preceding the Solemn* Pon
tifical Mass celebrated at the Ca
thedral of St. John the Baptist on
Easter Sunday, the Most Rev.
Gerald P. O'Hara, D. D., J. U. B.,
Bishop of Savannah-Atlanta, form
ally invested the Very Rev. James
J. Grady, of Savannah, and the
Very Rev. Joseph G. Cassidy, of
Milledgeville, as Papal Chamber
lains.
The investiture ceremony began
with the reading of the Papal
documents designating the two
priests of the Diocese of Savan
nah-Atlanta as Papal Chamber
lains, with the rank of title of
Very Reverend Monsignor. These
w'ere read by the Right Rev. Mon
signor T. James McNamara, rector
of the Cathedral.
At the Solemn Pontifical Mass
which followed, Bishop O’Hara
was assisted by Monsignor McNa-
Mara as assistant priest; the Rev,
Gregory Eichenlaub, O. S. B , and
the Rev. G. Obrecht, S. M. A., as
deacons of honor: the Rev. John
Toomey, deacon of the Mass; the
Rev. James C. Croke, subdeacon,
and the Rev. Joseph Kavanaugh,
master of ceremonies.
Following the Mass the newly
invested monsignori, and the
clergy of the city, were the guests
of Monsignor McNamara at a
luncheon at the DeSota Hotel, at
which Bishop O'Hara presided. In
the afternoon a reception was held
at the Knights of Columbus home
in honor of Monsignor Grady and
Monsignor Cassidy.

NEW YORK. — At the regular
quarterly meeting of the board of
directors of the Knights of Co
lumbus held in New York, Francis
J. Heazel, of Asheville, N. C., was
elected supreme treasurer of the
organization, succeeding Daniel J.
Callahan, Jr., of Washington, who
held an interim appointment to
that office following the death of
his father, incumbent of the office
for thirty-three years, in February
of this year.
Mr. Heazel has been a member
of the supreme board of directors,
of the Knights of Columbus since
1930 and member of the executive
and finance committee of that
body since 1940. A member of the
law firm of Heazel, Hartsborn and
Redmond, of Asheville, he is a
special counsel of the Metropoli
tan Casualty Company and is vice-
president and director of other af
filiated companies of the Loyalty
Group of Insurance Companies
headed by the Firemen’s Insur
ance Company of Newark. He has
been active in the civic, and sotflal
life of Asheville for many years.
He is a director of the Bank of
Asheville and a member of the
Sinking Fund Commission for Bun
combe County, N. C.
Mr. Heazel was appointed a
Knight of St. Gregory the Great
in 1939 by the late Pope Pius XL
He is married and has three chil
dren, two daughters and one son
who is in the service as a second
lieutenant of artillery. He is an
alumnus of Mount St. Mary’s Col
lege, Emmitsburg, Maryland.

The bride is a descendant of
Simeon Taylor, who gave his life
for his country in the Battle of the
Brandywine in 1777, and her
great-great-great-grandfather was
Colonel John Taylor who built
the Octagon House which James
and Dolly Madison occupied after
the White House was burned in
1814, and in which President
Madison signed the Treaty of
Ghent.
The groom is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Alois Raymond Risavy, of
Chicago.

MARIST COLLEGE CADETS
ATTEND MILITARY MASS
ATCANTA, Ga.,—The Rev. Mar
tin J. Barret, S. M., of the faculty
of Marist College, who was recent
ly commissioned as a chaplain in
the U. S. Army, was the celebrant
of a Solemn High Military Mass
Celebrated at the Sacred Heart
Church. The Rev. William A. Ma
guire, S. M., post chaplain at Fort
McPherson, was deacon of the
Mass, and the Very Rev. William
Lonergan, S. M., pastor of the
Sacred Heart Church, was subdea
con. The Rev. Michael A. Collins,
S. M., was master of ceremonies,
and the minor offices were filled
by Marist Cadets.
A special invitation to attend the
Mass with the Marist Cadets, was
extended to men in the armed
forces in and around Atlanta.
ATLANTA PARISH GUILD
ELECTS NEW OFFICERS
ATLANTA, Ga. — At a recent
meeting the St. Anthony’s Guild
elected Mrs. Eugene Brisbane,
president; Mrs. W. W. Redmond,
vice-president; Mrs. Albert Camp
bell, secretary; Mrs. Edward Hoc-
tor, treasurer; Mrs. Ray Patron,
corresponding secretary, and Mrs.
T. L. Young, membership com
mittee chairman.
As a token of appreciation for
the splendid work performed by
Mrs. Albert Campbell, who has
headed the Guild the past two
years, the members presented the
retiring president with a silver
serving tray.
ROCKINGHAM, N. C. — Mr.
and Mrs. Marion J. Conklin, of
Sullivan’s Island, have announced
the marriage of their daughter,
Miss Mary Virginia Conklin, and
Mr. William Claud Bray, of Rock
ingham and Charleston, at the
home of the bride’s parents, the
Rev. William J. Cox, pastor of
Stella Maris Church, Moultrie-
ville, S. C., officiating, assisted by
the Rev. John J. McCarthy, of
Charleston.
Mr. Bray is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Claud Bray, of Rockingham.

church in which the marriage was
solemnized was erected as a me
morial to the bride’s grandfather,
Patrick Phelan.
Mr. Vogler is the son of Mr.
and Mrs. James Brevard Vogler,
and is connected with the Engi
neering Department of the U. S.
Navy in Charleston.
