REV. PATRICK ADAMS
TO BE ORDAINED AT
NATIONAL SHRINE

MACON, Ga.—The Rev. Patrick
Adams, of the Order of Friars
Minor, will be ordained to the
priesthood on May 28, by the Most
Rev. Joseph M. Corrigan, D. D..
Rector of the Catholic University
of America, at the National Shrine
of the Immaculate Conception in
Washington, and will celebrate his
first Solemn Mas on May 31, at St.
Joseph’s Church, Macon.
Father Patrick's first Solemn
Mass will be celebrated in the
presence of the Most Rev. Gerald
P. O'Hara, D. D., Bishop of Sa-
vannah-Atlanta, with the Right
Rev. Msgr. T. James McNamara,
of Savannah, a cousin of Father
Patrick, as assistant priest. Other
officers of the Mass will be the
Rev. Robert Bryant, S. J., pastor
of St. Joseph's Church, deacon,
the Rev. Edward T. Cassidy, S. J.,
of Loyola University, New Or
leans, subdeacon, and the Rev.
William Reagan, S. J., assistant
pastor of St. Joseph’s, master of
ceremonies. The sermon will be
delivered by the Very Rev. Ra
phael Adams, O. F. M., rector of
St. Joseph’s Seminary, Callicoon,
N. Y., and uncle of Father Pat
rick.
Father Patrick, who before his
entrance into the Franciscan Or
der, was Raphael Adams, is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Le-
Hardy Adams, Sr., and was born
in Macon in 1916. He attended
St. Joseph's Parochial school, con
ducted by the Sisters of Mercy
here, and began his preparatory
study for the priesthood at St.
Joseph’s Seminary, Callicoon, N.
Y. He entered the novitiate of
the Franciscan Fathers fo the Pro
vince of the Most Holy Name of
Jesus at Paterson, N. J., in 1930,
and made his simple profession
the next year. His philosophical
study was made at St. Stephens
Monastery, Croghan, N. Y., and
at St. Anthony’s Monastery, But
ler, N. J. In 1939 he began his
theological study at Holy Name
College, Washington, D. C., mak
ing his solemn profession in 1940.
Besides his parents, who were
formerly of Savannah, his family
includes Mr. and Mrs. Charles
LeH. Adams, Jr., Mr. and Mrs.
Richard W. Adams, and Dennis
W. Adams, of Macon, and John
Francis Adams, U. S. N., of Nor
folk.
The newly ordained Franciscan,
will be honored at a luncheon and
a reception at the Catholic Club,
following the Mass.
UNIDENTIFIED SEAMEN
BURIED IN BRUNSWICK
BRUNSWICK, Ga. — Five un
identified seamen who lost their
lives when their, tanker was tor
pedoed off the coast, were buried
in Palmetto Cemetery here. Fu
neral services were conducted by
the Rev. Philip A. Hasson, S. M.,
pastor of St. Francis Xavier
Church, and by the Rev. T. L.
Hamsberger, of the First Presby
terian Church. Members of the
Brunswick Garden Club will beau
tify the lot where the seamen,
whose names, race and religion
are not known, are buried.

CHARLESTON, S. C. — The
Rev. J. Alexis Westbury, pastor of
St. Joseph's Church, celebrated a
Solemn High Mass at St. Joseph's
on May 13 to commemorate the
twenty-fifth aniversary of his or
dination to the priesthood. His
Excellency the Most Rev. Emmet
M. Walsh, D. D., Bishop of Charles
ton, presided in cope and mitre.
Officers of the Mass were the
Rev. Ward Cleary, S. S. SP., pastor
of St. Peter's and the Immaculate
Conception Churches, deacon; the
Rev. Lawrence McLaughlin, assist
ant pastor of St. Patrick’s Church,
subdeacon, and the Rev. Dennis
Lanigan, uncle of the jubitarian,
archpriest.
Deacons of honor to Bishop
Walsh were the Very Rev. Martin
C. Murphy, V. F., pastor of St.
Peter’s Church. Columbia, and the
Rev. Jeremiah Carmody, pastor of
St. Mary’s Church. The Rev. John
J. McCarthy, assistant rector of
the Cathedral of St. John the Bap
tist, was master of ceremonies.
The sermon was delivered by the
Rev. Dr. John L. Manning, chancel
lor of the Diocese of Charleston,
and after the Mass, Bishop Walsh
congratulated Father Westbury
upon his quarter century of faith
ful service to the Church.
Present in the sanctuary were
the Right Rev. Msgr. James J. May,
Vicar General of the Diocese of
Charleston, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Jo
seph L. O’Brien, pastor of St. Pat
rick’s Church, with many local and
visiting priests.
An augmented choir, under the
direction of Mrs. Tracy Stureken,
sang Haydn's Mass.
At a testimonial dinner, tend
ered Father Weestbury at the
Francis Marion Hotel, the jubi-
larian was presented a gift from
the clergy of the Diocese.
Father Westbury was born in
Charleston at St. Patrick's Par
ochial School and at Courtenay
School. He graduated from the
Charleston High School in 1910,
and after two year’s preparatory
study at St. Charles College, Cat-
onsville, Md., completed his phi
losophical and theological courses
at St. Bernard's Seminary, Ro
chester, N. Y. He was ordained to
the priesthood in 1917 in the Ca
thedral of St. John the Baptist by
the Most Rev. William T.. Russell,
D. D., at that time the Bishop of
Charleston.
Father Westbury was first as
signed to what was then known
as the Summerville missions, com
prising all that territory south of
Charleston Jo the Savannah River
and westward from Beaufort to Al
lendale. After laboring on these
difficult missions, he was appoint
ed auxiliary chaplain at the
of the Sacred Heart Church. Later
he was made assistant at St. Jo
seph’s, where he is now pastor.
He held pastorates successively

petual Help in Camden and at St.
Paul's Church, Spartanburg. He
was then named pastor of Our
Lady of Mercy Church here, and
in 1939 was assigned to St. Jo
seph’s.
Father Westbury is noted for his
interest in the young people, and
was responsible for the organiza
tion here of the Catholic Young
Men’s association, shortly after the
World War.
Service Flag for
Church in Macon
MACON, Ga.—A service flag
commemorating, the military and
naval service during this war of
the thirty or more members of
St. Joseph’s parish has been order
ed and will be hoisted with ap
propriate ceremonies on or before
Flag Day, June 14th. A census
of soldiers, sailors and marines was
recently taken by direction of the
Rev. J. Bryant, S. J., pastor of St.
Joseph's, which revealed the en
listed and commissioned strength
of the parish.
The blue stars will surround
the gold star , representing the
death in line of duty of Gregory
Jerome O’Hara, chief machinist’s
mate, U. S. Navy, who died on an
Iceland station late in February.

VOWS A SA RELIGIOUS
WAYCROSS, Ga., — Miss Ruth
A. Tickerhoof, former secretary
of the Wa’ycross Branch of the
Catholic Laymen's Association' of
Georgia, will receive the habit of
the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus
at a religious reception to be held
