NURSES IN SAVANNAH
TO RECEIVE DIPLOMAS

SAVANNAH, Ga. — Graduation
exercises at St. Joseph’s Hospital
Training School for Nurses will be
held May 31 at the Cathedral of
St. John the Baptist, with the
Most Rev. Gerald P. O'Hara, D. D.,
Bishop of Savannah-Atlanta, .pre
siding.
Fifteen nurses will receive di
plomas, Misses Mary Aranda, Mary
Elliott, Esther Hall, Marjorie Hall,
Jean Hymes, Latrelle Harvey, Jac
queline Lee, Sara Mooney, Eulalia
Overstreet, Earle Grace Pierce,
Martha Keith Simmons, Lynn
Sherman, Margarette Wilson,
Evelyn Harris and Mary Zipperer.
St. Joseph's Hospital School of
Nurses plans to admit, in addition
to the regular September class, a
class starting June 27. This class
will aid in meeting the govern
ment’s request that at least 55,000
student nurses be admitted to
schools of nurses during the com
ing year. Another reason for the
extra class is the need for more
nurses that will result from the ad
dition which is to be made to the
hospital within the next few
months.

GRADUATES FROM ARMY
BOMBARDIER SCHOOL
ATLANTA, Ga.—Joseph Harri
son Burke, son of Mr. and Mrs.
J. C. Burke, was among grad-,
uates of the first class of Amer
ica’s “most dangerous men” when
he was awarded a commission at
the world’s greatest bombardier
school at Midland, Texas, Army
Flying School, where in recogni
tion of outstanding ability he was
appointed class commander. The
young Atlantan, who' is 22, was
commissioned a second lieutenant
in the U. S. Army Air Corps.

Philippines, who has been award
ed the Distinguished Service Cross
for heroic service in action. For
merly stationed at St. Joseph’s
Church, Ponchatoula, La., Father
Curran holds the rank of Captain.
He studied at Catholic University,
where his brother, the Rev. Paul
C Curran, O. P„ was ordained

BENEDICTINE SENIOR WINS
RICH’S ESSAY CONTEST
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Anthony
B. Oetgen, a senior at the Bene
dictine Military School, who won
first prize from Chatham County
in the diamond jubilee essay con
test sponsored by Rich's in At
lanta, was awarded a $25 war
bond. Mr. Oetgen’s essay was on
“The Citizen of My County Who
Has Done the Most for the State
of Georgia.” He chose Dr. Charles
H. Herty as his subject.

Very Rev. Joseph T. Daley, C.
SS. R., pastor of Holy Trinity
Church, has been appointed rector
of St. Clement’s Mission House,
Ephrata, Pa., and will be succeed
ed as pastor here by the Very
Rev. Edwin A. Shearer, C. SS.
R., who has been rector at St.
Clement’s and pastor of Mother
of Perpetual Help Church in
Ephrata.
The Rev. Francis X. Bader, C.
SS. R., pastor of St. Joseph’s
Colored Mission in Spartanburg,
has been transferred to St.
Alphonsus Church in New York.
The Rev. Gerald Fien, C. SS.
R., who has been Father Bader’s
assistant, will succeed him as pas
tor at St. Joseph’s.
The Rev. John Anderson, C. SS.
R., formerly assistant at Our Lady
of Perpetual Help Church in
Brooklyn, comes to Spartanburg
as Father Fien’s assistant.

SPONSORS SILVER TEA
ATLANTA, Ga. — Members of
the Altar Society of the Sacred
Heart Church sponsored a silver
tea at the home of Mrs. Robert
F. Henry on May 5. Tea was pour
ed by Mrs. Clement McGowan and
Mrs. Lewis Gordon, with Mrs. L. A.
Wynn and Mrs. Sarah Brosnan
assisting. Ih the receiving line
were Mrs. Stephens Mitchell, Mrs.
John W. Turner, Mrs. N. L. Angier,
Mrs. R. W. Bowling, and Mrs.
Fred Murphy. Assisting in en
tertaining were Mrs. Clyde Haynes,
Mrs. Mae McAlpin, Mrs. Rowland
Murray, Mrs. Rudolph Katrina,
and Mrs. James Wilson. Miss
Mary McGuire kept the guest book.

Among the editors of high school
papers selected as best in the fif
teenth annual contest sponsored by
the Georgia Scholastic Press As
sociation was Miss Marie Lyons, of
the St. Vincent's Academy "Flash,”
Savannah, who was presented with
a silver trophy by Earl B. Braswell,
publisher of the Athens Banner-
Herald.
Miss Angela Cone, of the staff
of the “Live Wire,” publication of
the students of the Sacred Heart
High School, Atlanta, received the
A. B. Dick Company award for the
best mimeogt’aphed paper.

HOLD MEETING

CHARLESTON, S. C. — At a
meeting of the Council of Cath
olic Women held on April 27 at
the home of Miss Rosa Oliver, a
report on the national convention
of the N. C. C. W. in Hollywood,
Fla., was made by Mrs. Leo Lowry,
president of the Charleston Dio
cesan Council and Miss May Con
don.
Mrs. George R. Wililams, pre
sided and reported gathering mag
azines on Victory Book Day for
delivery to the USO Clubs.
The Council was represented at
the convention of the South Caro
lina Federation of Women's Clubs
held in Sumter, and will contribute
two workers per hour to assist the
Poppy Day committee. Representa
tives of the Council also served as
hostesses at the Manigault House
USO center during the week of
May 18, and are working on vari
ous defense projects.
Mrs. Henry G. Condon heads a
nominating committee which in
cludes Mrs. W. Cyril O'Driscoll
and Miss Marie May which will
report at the next meeting at which
time an election will be held.
CHARLES DILLON, SAVANNAH,
MOVES TO FAYETTEVILLE
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Charles W.
Dillon, well known Savannah m:r-
chant, president of Morrison-Sul-
livan Dry Goods Company here
since 1938, has accepted a position
with The Capitol, one of the lead
ing department stores of Fayette
ville, N. C., and he and Mrs. Dillon,
who was formerly Miss Elizabeth
Lyons, of Augusta, are now mak
ing their home in the North Caro
lina city.
Mr. Dillon is a member of Sa
vannah Council, Knights of Colum
bus.
