Mr. and Mrs. Luther Senn,
of Parish in Columbia,
Observe Golden Wedding

COLUMBIA, S. C. — Mr. and
Mrs. Luther Senn, of Olympia
Village, celebrated their golden
wedding anniversary at St. Pat
rick's Church on May 3, at a spe
cial Mass offered by the Very Rev
Martin C. Murphy, pastor of St
Peter's and St. Patrick’s Churches.
Mr. and Mrs. Senn have been
members of St. Peter’s parish since
childhood, and attended that
church until St. Patrick’s was
erected in the Olympia Village
section of Columbia several years
ago.
At the special wedding Mass,
the church was filled to its ca-;
pacity by the children, grandchil-1
dren and great-grandchildren of
Mr. and Mrs. Senn. The entire
congregation received Holy Com-!
munion and after Mass visited the
Senn home where relatives and
friends, including a number of
soldiers from Camp Jackson, were
served breakfast.
In his remarks at" the Mass, Fath
er Murphy congratulated the ven
erable couple on their staunch Ca-
atholicity, their unconquerable
faith in spite of many trials and
difficulties, and wished them many
more years of happiness.
Children of Mr. and Mrs. Senn
who attended the Mass were G. J.
Senn. W. J. Senn, Mrs. Mary Stur-
key, Mr. and Mrs. W. T. Senn, Mr.
and Mrs. C. J. Senn, and Mr. and
Mrs. Ollie Senn.
Grandsons and granddaughters
attending were: Miss Marjorie
Senn, Mrs. Louise Driggers, Miss
Gertrude Wright, Mrs. Evelyn
Driggers, Mr. and Mrs. D. B. Kelly,
Bernard Sturkey, Kenneth Senn,
Hugh Senn, Paul Senn, and Joseph
Senn. Mary Agnes Kelly, a great-
granddaughter, and Buddy Kelly,
a great-grandson, were also pres
ent.
Nieces and nephews attending
were Mr. and Mrs. Charles De-
Mates, Mr. and Mrs. M. L. v Cul-
breth, Mr. and Mrs. Horace
Schwart, and Mrs. Robert Marcum.
Great nieces and nephews: Mr.
and Mrs. Harry Stalnaker, Mary
Culbreth, Bobby Marcum, Steven
Schwartz and Patricia Schwartz.
Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Abbott, sister
and brother-in-law, also attended,
as did a number of friends of Mi’,
and Mrs. Senn.
Her Story Wins
Bernadette Loosbroek, of Melrose
Minn., a junior at the College ol
St. Benedict. St. Joseph, Minn.,
whose short story. "The Hankie
and the Sms." was adjudged the
best among 205 entries in a
contest conducted by "Atlantic
Monthly " The winner and her in
structor in creative writing. Sister
Mariella. O S. B.. have been
awarded a scholarship for the
summer session of the Bread Loaf

PASTOR MOVES PARISH
TO BE NEAR INTERNED
JAPANESE OF SEATTLE

SEATTLE—With his entire par
ish moved into an internment
camp, the Rev. Leo Tibesar, M. M.,
pastor of the local Maryknoll Mis
sion to the Japanese has taken up
residence close by the camp at
Puyallup, Wash., in order to
minister to the spiritual needs of
his people.
“I'm staying at the rectory two
blocks from the camp. Our peo
ple each day have morning prayers
and Mass, at which some 20 to 30
receive Holy Communion. In the
evening they gather for the reci
tation of the rosary together. Per
mission has been obtained for the
Catholics of the two remaining
camps to come in for Mass. At
tendance runs to over 500, with
an average of about 100 Com
munions every Sunday.”
Closing Exercises at
Schools in Charleston
CHARLESTON, S. C. — The
Mdst Rev. Emmet M. Walsh, D. D.,
Bishop of Charleston, delivered an
address and presented diplomas to
graduates of Bishop England High
School at exercises held in the Ca
thedral of St. John the Baptist on
June 7, following Mass celebrated
by the Rev. J. Lawrence McLaugh
lin. of the school faculty. -

CATHEDRAL SCHOOL
At the closing exercises of the
Cathedral School, brief addresses
were made by the Rt. Rev. Msgr.
James J. May, V. G., rector of the
Cathedral of St. John the Baptist
and the Rev. John J. McCarthy,
assistant rector. The commence
ment Mass was celebrated by the
Rev. St. John Patat, recently or
dained to the priesthood at the
Cathedral here.
George Rabb was the highest in
scholastic work for the year, sec
ond honor pupils being, Margaret
Budds and Patricia Murray, with
honorable mention to William Mc
Pherson, Irvin Molony, James
O’Neall and James Mosimann.
ST. PATRICK’S SCHOOL
Closing exercises of St. Patrick’s
School were held in St. Patrick's
Church, certificates of promotion
to Bishop England High School
being presented by the Rt. Rev.
Msgr. Joseph L. O’Brien, pastor of
St. Patrick’s Church. After the
exercises the graduates were en
tertained by the Parent-Teacher
Association.
ATLANTA, Ga. — Of interest
here in the announcement of the
marriage of Miss Margaret Helen
Convery, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Thomas Joseph Convery, of Brant
ford, Ontario, Canada, at St. Mary’s
Church in that city, to Cornelius
Francis O’Shea, of Atlanta. The
Rev. John J. O’Shea, assistant pas
tor of St. Joseph’s Church, Athens,
Ga., and a brother of the groom,
officiated.
Mr. O'Shea is the son of the
late James John O'Shea, of Au
gusta and ’Atlanta, and Mrs. Kath
erine Murphy O’Shea of this city.

The bride was attended by her

Aiken, S. C., and the groom’s best
man was his brother, George Shaw
of Charleston.
The bride is the daughter of
Mrs. C. D. Fielder and the groom
is the son of Major and Mrs. John
C. Shaw of San Francisco. Cap
tain Shaw is stationed at Camp
Gordon.

Following the celebration of
Mass by the Rev. J. Alexis West-
bury, pastor of St. Joseph’s Church,
the annual commencement exer
cises of St. Joseph’s Parochial
School were held in the church.
Father Westbury delivered certifi
cates to the following pupils who
had completed the parochial school
course: Dorothy Ann Dawson,
Claire Elizabeth Dunne, Lawrence
Robert Kruger, John Joseph La-
Torre, Christopher Joseph McCul
loch, Margaret Loretta Moore and
Gloria Theresa Pinto. Claire Eliza
beth Dunne was the honor gradu

seph’s Church.
GREENSBORO, N. C. — Miss
Caroline Jane Rigg and Karl Al
len Fisher, Jr., of the U. S. Army,
were married on June 3 at St. Bene
dict’s Church, with a Nuptial Mass,
celebrated by the Rev. Eugene
Livelsburger, assistant pastor of St,
Benedict s. Present in the sanctu
ary were the Rev. Charles Kastner,
O. S. B., rector of Belmont Abbey
Cathedral: the Rev. Gerald Mur
phy, C. M.. pastor of St. Mary’s
Church, and the Rev. Hugh -Dolan,
pastor of St. Benedict’s.
Mrs. Fisher is the only daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. William Wayne
Rigo s , and is medical technician at
St. Leo’s Hospital. Mr. Fisher is
the son of Mr. and Mrs. Karl Allen
Fisher.

LeRoy Edward Fake, U. S. A. Air
Corps, were married at the Daniel
Field Air Base chapel on June 12,

S. Army chaplain, oficiating.
Mrs. Fake, the daughter of Mrs.
Walter MacGregor, is a graduate
of the University of Michigan. For
several years she has been teach
ing in Ohio. She and her mother
have been making their home in
Ann Arbor, Mich. Lieutenant
Fake, also a graduate of the Uni
versity of Michigan, is stationed
at Daniel Field.

livered the address at closing ex
ercises of the Sacred Heart Pa
