Varied Program of
Entertainment at
Columbus USO Club
(Special to The Bulletin)
COLUMBUS, Ga., — During the
month of June a full program of
entertainment is being provided
service men at the magnificent
new USO Club here, jointly op
erated by the National Catholic
Community Service and the Jew
ish Welfare Board, with Eugene
Bergmann as NCCS director.
The wide variety of entertain
ment offered at the club included
a square dance, radio and drama,
open house dances, “Coffee ands”,
a theme party, stage entertain
ment, community chorus sym
phony, USO Town Hall, dancing
classes, motion pictures, a quiz par
ty, an invitation dance ,a bingo
party, camera club meetings, Co
lumbus Symphony Orchestra con
cert, Pilot Club dance, and other
affairs that were greatly enjoyed
by the throng of men in uniform
who visit the recreation center.

BAPTIST BIBLE CLASS
SAVANNAH, Ga. — Dr. Ken
neth L. Duffy, instructor in Span
ish and Latin-American history at
Armstrong Junior College here,
addressed the members of the
Men’s Bible Class of the First
Baptist Church in this city on Sun
day, May 31.
Dr.. Duffy,. a prominent - Cath
olic layman of Savannah, is a mem
ber of Savannah Council, Knights
of Columbus. >

vannah Beach. Mr. Thompson, a
graduate of Spring Hill College,
was formerly athletic director at
Bennedictine Military College, and
was president of the alumni asso
ciation of that school in 1940. He
has been secretary of the -Savan
nah, South Atlantic League, Base

FLAG DAY OBSERVED
at camp McClellan
THE MARYLAND Court of Ap
peals has upheld a decision of a
lower court which ruled that laws
empowering the Commissioners of
St. Mary’s County to provide trans
portation for parochial as well as
public school children are valid.

fort McClellan, Ala., —
Flag Day was celebrated by the
Catholics of the 7th Regiment of
the BIRTC here, when more than
700 attended a Field Mass in the
open-air Theater.
The Mass was celebrated by
their Chaplain ,the Rev. Cosmos
Boyle, C. P. Practically all the of
ficers, both Catholic and non-
Catholic, attended with the boys.
After Mass, through arrange
ment with John B. McCloskey, Di
rector of the USO-NCCS club of
Anniston, more than 500 of the
boys were taken by busses to An
niston, where they marched
through the main street to the
Government Recreation Center
operated by the National Catholic
Community Service and the Jew
ish Welfare Board. There the sol
diers were given a Flag Day Com
munion Breakfast, prepared for
them by women of Sacred Heart
Parish, only Catholic church in An
niston. Speakers included Mr. Mc
Closkey, who was toastmaster; Lt.
Col. Earl L. Ringer, Commander
of the 21st Battalion of the 7th
Regiment; Father Boyle, and the
Rev. Herman C. Cazalas, Pastor of
Sacred Heart Church.
Each soldier at the breakfast
was given, through the courtesy of
the National Catholic Community
Service, a small medal of the Sac
red Heart with .an etching, on the
back of Our Lady of Perpetual
Help, and also a small American
Flag which the boys wore pinned
on their tunics.

The USO Club, which will be operated by the National Catholic
Community Service, at Savannah Beach, was formally opened on May
22. The club house was formerly the Ocean View Hotel, and will have
sleeping accomodations for 250 men which will be available to service
men at the nominal cost of 25 cents. Bathing suits will be available at
a rental of 5 cents. The opening was celebrated with a swimming
party, followed by a picnic lunch and a dance at the Hotel Tybee.
Francis J. Kelly, director of the USO-NCCS. who will supervise the
activity at the new club house, has expressed appreciation of the in
terest that Mayor Roland R. Jones, of Savannah Beach, has shown in
the project. Jack Thompson, assistant USO-NCCS director, will be in
direct charge of the club, with volunteer assistants.

The Rer. Denis P. Gray, pastor of
St. John the Baptist Church here,
has just completed his first year
as teacher and principal of a Bald
win County grade school and has
been invited to accept this posi
tion in a larger school. However,
Father Gray has decided to retain
his present position in order t®
teach the children of his own
parishoners.
Father Gray is a native of Ire
land and has been in the Diocese of
Mobile for. eight ,,years._ As pastor
at Magnolia Springs, he has initi
ated many social and economic re
forms among his people, including
a marketing association to dispose
to the best advantage of the hun
dreds of carloads of potatoes which
are shipped from this section each,
season.
