(Continued from One-A)
selves, and I am well aware of
the sacrifices that they make.
With respect to the work car
ried on by the lady collectors,
there is one point that I wish to
make clear. People have said that,
now that we have the Annual Cath
olic Charities Campaign, to which
people contribute, there is no need
for membership in the Female Or
phans Benevolent Society. Let me
say in this respect that our Dio
cesan Catholic Charities, for the
time being at least, must direct
most of its endeavors towards pro
viding the missionary sections of
the Diocese with Churches and
Chapels. These are essential. There
can be no greater charity than this.
In outlying sections fo the State
there are little Catholic groups,
who are entitled to a Church for
their own just as much as the peo
ple in the large cities. Yet, be
cause of their poverty, they are not
able to underwrite the expense of
the building of a church. Here the
Diocese must come to the rescue—
and we all know, how in recent
years, new churches have been
built in Douglas, Elberton, Lake
land. and Cedartown. At the pres
ent time a new church is being
built in Alapaha. Schools in the
missionary sections of the Diocese
have to be supported from Dioces
an funds and here, too, Catholic
Charities come to the assistance of
the small local Catholic Communi
ties. Therefore, until, such time
as the fundamental and essential
religious needs of Catholics every-
^ where in the Diocese are provided
for, our established institutions
must continue to operate from
their original basis. That is why
'Catholic Charities, at least for
some years to come, cannot give
much help to St. Mary’s or to any
other of the established institu
tions of the Diocese. It is clear,
therefore, that our lady collectors
are still called upon to play a vital
part in the work of maintaining St.
Mary's Home.
1 take this opportunity to ex
press to the following the heart
felt thanks of the Diocese and of
its Bishop for their great good
ness and charity to the Sisters and
Orphans of St. Mary’s Home: Dr.
Wm. B. Crawford, Sr., the Medical
Director of the Home; Dr. G. H.
Faggart, Eye and Ear Specialist;
Dr. J. J. O'Connor, Dentist, and
Dr. John Hodge, Optician. I beg
to thank also Dr. R. A. Dooley,
Dentist, Dr. P. J. Thomas and Dr.
Charles C. Hedges, the latter be
ing the City Doctor, for all that
they have done in promoting rhe
physical welfare of all at St. Mary's
Home. From time to time, we have
to call upon Mr. Thomas F. Walsh
for legal advice and service re
specting the affairs of St. Mary’s
Home. To him we express our
heartfelt thanks for all the time
that he has devoted to the affairs
of the Institution gratuitously. At
the same time, I thank Sister An
gela and the Sisters of Mercy of
St. Vincent’s Academy for their
great kindness and generosity in
providing a high school education
for a number of the older girls
of St. Mary’s Home. Freely, have
all these people given of their
time, without any compensation
whatsoever. They have looked af
ter the various needs of the Sis
ters and children of the Institution,
and no words of mine would be
adequate to convey the full mea
sure of our appreciation and grati
tude.
During the past year the grounds
of St. Mary’s Home have been
made more beautiful by the addi
tion of Lourdes Grotto, gift of Miss
.Annie McCrohan. A long needed
organ for the Chapel was provided
by Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Garrity. Miss
Annie Maddock donated the stage
curtain ir. the auditorium. The
Home is deeply indebted to Mr.
Milton Little, who gave so much
of his time in building the Lourdes
Grotto, and in helping to erect
the side altars. He also donated
the tabernacle for St. Joseph’s al
tar and has done other favors for
the institution. Mrs. Margaret Fog
arty and Mrs. J. J. Gleason do
nated the side altars for the Chap
el. To these generous benefactors
of the Home go our sincerest ex
pression of deepest gratitude.
I ask Mr. W. M. Stewart, of the
Seaboard Airline Railway ”om-
pany and Mr. John . Rourke, to ac
cept our heartfelt thanks for many
acts of kindness towards the Sis
ters and the girls at St. Mary’s
Home during the past year. I am,
thinking, too, of the various fra
ternal organizations that have con
tributed to the welfare of the
Home during the past year; the
Knights of Columbus; the ancient
Order of Hibernians; the Elks, the
Lions, and Rotary Clubs; Mr. Ar
thur Lucas, and the managers cf
various Savannah motion picture
theatres, all of whom have been
generous during- the year to the
Orphans at St. Mary’s.
Life at St. Mary’s would lack
much without daily Mass, the Sac
raments, and all the devotional
practices that are dear to the
Catholic heart. In this connection
St. Mary's is deeply indebted to
the priests of the Blessed Sacra
ment Parish, who take care of the
daily spiritual needs of all at the
Home; and also to Father Norbert,
O. S. B., for his unfailing interest
in the Home, especially in St.
Mary’s Sodality. We ask these de
voted priests to accept this well
merited tribute of our gratitude
and appreciation.
The recently formed Alumnae
Association of St. Mary’s Home has
done good work. They have mani
fested sincere interest in the Home
and have done much for the wel
fare of the girls during the past
year. To the members of this
Alumnae Association go my deep
est and sincerest thanks.
Finally, I wish to thank all here
present, especially the members of
the Advisory Board for their in
terest in the welfare of St. Mary’s
Home. And we repeat those strik
ing words of Our Lord: “Whatso
ever you do unto these -My least
brethren, you do unto me.” Great
was Our Lord’s love for little chil
dren. Tender and compassionate
was His interest in the poor little
lambs of His flock. Those who do
things for these little children at
St. Mary's share in Our Lord's
tender compassion and they will
share, too, in tire reward that He
has promised to those who love
and help the poor.
It is our fervent prayer that the
Giver of all good gifts may shower
down upon all benefactors of St.
Mary's Home His choicest favors
and blessings in this life and in
the next.
