FIFTEEN
Evening Mass at
Fort McClellan

ANNISTON, Ala. — The Most
Rev. Stephen A. Donahue, Auxili
ary Bishop of New York, celebrat
ed his first evening Mass on the
parade grounds at Fort McClellan
on July 8, m the presence of a
congregation that included Briga
dier Philoon and over 700 officers
and men of the Fort.
His Excellency was assisted dur
ing the Mass by Lieutenant Vitalia
P. La Sota, chaplain of the 3rd
Regiment, formerly of the Arch
diocese of Detroit. Arrangements
for the Mass were made by Lieu
tenant H. T. O'Gara, formerly of
th Archdiocese of Chicago.
Immediately following the Mass,
Bishop Donahue confirmed a num
ber of soldiers, among them Major
Brackney of the Medical Corps,
sponsors were Col. George O'Con
nell, commander of the Medical
Detachment at Fort McClellan,
and Lt. Col. Timothy Sapia-Bosch,
commander of the 6th Battalion!
Each of the soldiers confirmed was
presented a kit for Catholic soldi
ers, given by John B. McCloskey,
director of the USO-NCCS Club
in Anniston.
Among the attending clergy
were the Rev. Eugene T. McClos
key, S. T. D., of Cathedral College.
Brooklyn; the Rev. Herman Cass
ias, pastor of Sacred Heart
Church, Anniston: the Rev. John
Casey, S. S. E., and the Rev. John
Walsh, S. S. E., of All Saints'
Chapel, Anniston: the Rev. George
Royer, pastor of St. James Church.
Gadsden, and the Rev. Bernard
Platta, chaplain of the Holy Name
of Jesus Hospital, Gadsden.
Among those who were confirm
ed was Charles Murphy. Jr., son
of the assistant director of the
USO-NCCS Club in Anniston.

BENEFIT FESTIVAL
HELD IN COLUMBUS
ST. JOHN'S VACATION HOME FOR GIRLS, at WaynesviUe, North Carolina, on the eastern edge of
the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, is located at the-highest elevation of any girls’ camp in
Eastern America. Range after range of towering mountains make up a panorama of untold beauty as
seen from the front porch of the camp, which is conducted by the Sisters of St. Francis from St. Francis
Wisconsin.
NAVY CHAPLAIN PREACHES
AT SAVANNAH CATHEDRAL
SAVANNAH, Ga.—Lieut. Com
mander Thomas J. Knox, a priest
of the Diocese of Savannah-At-
lanta, now serving as a chaplain
in the United States Navy, cele
brated Mass at the Cathedral of
St. John the Baptist on Sunday.
July 12, and in sermons delivered
at that Mass and others at the
Cathedral on that day, related
some of his experiences as a
chaplain.
Before receiving a commission
as a chaplain in the Navy, Father
Knox was stationed at the
Cathedral. Since he has been in
the Navy he has seen service in
all parts of the world.

USO-NCCS CLUB

COLUMBUS, Ga. — Featuring
activity at the USO Recreational
.Center operated here jointly by
the Natonal Catholic Community
Service and the Jewish Welfare.
Board was the Home State Salute
Party at which soldiers from New
York were special guests.
Other events at the club, spon
sored by the NCCS during July
included a Quiz Party.. an Open
House Dance. a Community
Chorus Rehearsal, the Columbus
Symphony Orchestra. Motion Pic
tures and Invitation Dance, and a

COLUMBUS, Ga — Student* •!
St. Joseph’s Academy participated
in a festival sponsored by the La
dies’ Aid Society of the Church
of the Holy Family for the benefit
of the Sisters of Mercy, staged on
the lawn at Third Avenue and
Twelfth Street. The program in
cluded dances, a drill, a patriotic
rythm band, and crowning of the
queen, Patricia O'Donnell, daugh
ter of Lieut, and Mrs. William
O'Donnell.
The queen was attended by Do
lores Naehr and Mary Rankin as
maids of honor; Bobby Lee and
Richard Odon, pages, and six
flower girls. Thomas Dillon was
the crown bearer, and Robert
Rutte, son of Col. and Mrs. Louis
Rutte, was king. The trainbear-
ers were Jerry Isaacs and Paul
Mitzen.
Supper was served and both
adults and children were enter
tained by games. Mrs. Jesse
Jackson and Mrs. Arthur Berry
were general co-chairmen of the
festival, committee chairmen be
ing Mrs. F. G. Storey. Mrs. H. C.
Bize, Mrs. Henry Murphy. Mrs.
Fred Glass, Mrs. William Fortson,
Mrs. John Baird, Mrs. M. D.
Greene, Mrs. M. D. Streaker. Mrs.
John Lee, Mrs. Robert Rainey,
and Miss Lillian Ryan.
A SOARING GLIDER, designed
and built by Robert S. Eikenberry,
assistant professor of Aeronautical
Engineering at Notre Dame Uni
versity, has been contributed to
the Army Air Corps by the College
of Engineering. Arrnv instructors
will use the craft for training pur
poses.
