It is now operated as a general hospital, and it is rated one of the best in North Carolina. The Rev. Joseph A. Gallagher is the resident chaplain. W, J. McAlpin Heads Atlanta Council, Knights of Columbus (Special to The Bulletin) ATLANTA, Ga — On July 1. at one of the largest rpeetings held by Atlanta Council, No. 660, Knights of Columbus, in many years, W. J. McAlpin was installed as grand knight, succeeding Brian F. O’Brien. Other officers install ed at the meeting were: Grover E. Heyser, deputy grand knight; Dr. L. P. Kane, chancellor, Herbert Rudolf, warden; J. I. Oberst, fin ancial secretary; John M. Harri son. treasurer; Thomas J. Gilmore, advocate; Jack T. Langley, record er; James Gillespie, inside guard; Paul T. Elsas and C. F. Porter, outside guards, John J. McManus, Brian F. O’Brien and James F. Davey, trustees. The Rev. William A. Maguire, S. M., of the faculty of the Marist College, is chaplain of the Council. At the meeting the Council adopted a new slogan: “660 Mem bers for Atlanta Council, 660,” and a campaign to increase the mem bership was inaugurated. For twenty-six consecutive Sat urday nights, Atlanta Council has entertained service men stationed in and around Atlanta with a dance at the Columbian Hall. More than 8,500 soldier have registered during the period of twenty-six weeks, and it is probable that many more men in the armed forces enjoyed the dancing and refreshments that the members of the Council made available to their guests in uniform. The Coun cil also places its club house at the disposal of the various parish groups of the city for “Open House” entertainments each Sun day afternoon and evening. Camp Croft Unit of Holy Name Society Marks Anniversary SPARTANBURG, S. C.—Mem bers of the Holy Name Society of the Sixth Regiment at Camp Croft comemorated the first anniversary of their establishment at a Field Mass and Communion breakfast on July 19. The Mass wass cele brated on the lav/n of the Church of St. Paul the Apostle, by the Rey. Francis O. Ferri, the pastor. The sermon was delivered by the Rev. Thomas J. Mackin, pastor of St. Francis de Sales Church, Co- lumbia. Immediately after the Mass, breakfast was served at the Cleve land Hotel. Private Joseph Burns, president of the Sixth Regimental Holy Mass Society, was toastmas ter and the speakers included Hon. Jennings L. Thompson. Mayor of Spartanburg; the Rev. James Lister, chaplain of the 26th Battalion and moderator of the Holy Name Society; Father Ferri, Francis J. Heazel, K. S. G.; Su preme Treasurer of the Knights of Columbus, Asheville; Private Michael Scharaf, vice-president of the Holy Name Society, and Pvt. John Cunningham, of Philadel phia. Pvt. Richard Osgood led the singing of “Holy God We Praise Thy Name” at the conclu sion of the program. SOUTH CAROLINA PRIEST HONORED BV CATHOLIC HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION CHICAGO, 111—The Rev. George Lewis Smith, pastor of St. Mary Help of Christians Church, Aiken, and Director of Hospitals for the Diocese of South Carolina, was elected a member of the Supervisory and Adminis trative Board of the Catholic Hos pital Association of the United States and Canada at the 27th annual convention of the associa tion here here. William T. Ryan, Sr,, Funeral in Savannah SAVANNAH. Ga.—Funeral ser vices for William T. Ryan, Sr., who died on June 27, were held from the Cathedral of St. John the Bap tist. Mr. Ryan, who was 82 years old, held the oldest marine engineer’s license in the South. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Annie Hernes Ryan, to whom he would have been married 57 years in November six sons, William T. Ryan, Jr., of Charleston, Aloyisus J. Ryan, Ira Ryan, Robert F. Ryan, Vestus J. Ryan and Leo B. Ryan, all of Savannah four daughters, Mrs. A. O. Ivey, Mrs. J. Leroy Cole, and Miss Gertrude Ryan, all of Savannah, and Mrs. H. B. Hoff man, Philadelphia, fourteen grand children and a number of nieces and nephews. The pallbearers, all nephews of Mr. Ryan, were W. D. Hattrick, S. T. Hattrich, A. L. Hattrich, J. G. Hattrich, W. A. Hattrich and J. A. Hattrich. WILLIAM D. DURDEN FUNERAL IN SAVANNAH SAVANNAH, Ga.—Funeral ser vices for William D. Durden, for mer hotel man, who died in Miami on July 5, were held from the Cathedral* of St. John the Baptist, the Rev. John Toomey officiat ing. At one time one of the best known hotel men in this section, Mr. Durden had been a partner in the firm of Durden and Powers at Tybee, and operated the Hotel Tybee and the Sea Breeze at the island resort. He is survived by three daugh ters, Mrs. Mary Durden Lucree and Mrs. Jessie Durden Chatter- ton, both of Savannah, and Mrs. Charles Haynesworth Hall. Mi ami; two sisters, Mrs. J. R. Bur ney and Mrs. William Z. Gilbert, Savannah; a grandson and a granddaughter. MISS MAUDE HEYWARD FUNERAL IN SAVANNAH SAVANNAH, Ga.—Funeral ser vices for Miss Maude Heyward, a prominent member of the Georgia Society of Colonial Dames of America, who died on July 15. were held from the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Well known as a locat historian. Miss Heyward was tl daughter of the late J. Guerard Heyward and Mrs. Pauline deCaradeuc Hey ward. She had been a member of the Colonial Dames since 1897, and had held several offices since that time. She was genealogist at the time of her death. MRS. CATHERINE DOYLE FUNERAL IN ATLANTA ATLANTA, Ga.—Funeral ser vices for Mrs. Catherine Doyle were held on July 3 from the Sacred Heart Church, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Joseph F. Croke officiating. MRS. J. B. DUNLAP DIES IN ATLANTA ATLANTA, Ga.—Funeral ser vices for Mrs. J. B. Dunlap, who died June 28, were held from the Sacred Heart Church, the Rev. John Emmerth, S. M., officiating. Mrs. Dunlap is survived by her husband;! a daughter, Mrs. J. J Wolpert, and three grandchildren. JOSEPH DESSERT DIES IN ATLANTA ATLANTA, Ga.—Funeral servi ces for Mrs. Joseph J. Dessert, who died July 1, were held from the Sacred Heart Church, the Rev. E. W. McKenny, of Chicago, a brother of Mrs. Dessert, officiating. Mrs. Dessert is survived by her husband; a son, Joseph J. Dessert, Jr.; a daughter, Mary Jane Dessert; a brother, Father McKenny, and a sister, Mrs. Bertram Jackson, Batavia, Illinois. THOMAS J. JOHN THOMAS CARTY DIES IN SAVANNAH SAVANNAH, Ga.—Funeral ser vices for John Thomas Carty, who died June 20, were held from the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist. Mr. Carty, a native of Missis sippi, had resided in Savannah for the past few years. He is sur vived by his wife, Mrs. Lottie Wells Carty; two brothers, Charlie I. Carty and Claude D. Carty; both of Portsmouth, Va.. a sister, Mrs. W. J. Lyle, Savannah: his paternal grandmother, Mrs. J. T. Carty. Montpelier, Miss., and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. MRS EZRA GODWIN DIES IN DUNN, N. C. NEWTON GROVE, N. C —Fun eral services for Mrs. Ezra God win, who died at her home in Dunn on July 8, were held from Holy Redeemer Church. Mrs. Godwin is survived by her husband; three sons, Enoch, Jasper and Paul Godwin; three daughters, Mrs. Arthur Darden, Mrs. Noah Blackman, and Miss Mary Eliza beth Godwin; a half-brother, J. W. Denning, of Porturioutli. Va.. and two brothers, Rufus West, of SISTER ANSELM DIES IN ATLANTA Beloved Sister of Mercy Had Taught in Convent Schools of Georgia for Generations ATLANTA, Ga. — Sister Mary Anselm Lyons, of the Sisters of Mercy, died on June 20 at St. Joseph’s Infirmary here. Funeral services were held from the In firmary chapel with the Rev. John Emmerth. S. M., officiating. Pallbearers were Grover Heyser, Dr. Joseph Hines, Bernard Kane, Stephens Mitchell, Clem McGowan and Robert V. Cambell. . Sister Anselm entered the Sis ters of Mercy at St. Vincent’s Con vent in Savannah, sixty-five years ago. She taught in Savannah and later at St. Mary’s Academy in Augusta and also at the Sacred Heart School in Augusta. For several years she taught at the Immaculate Conception School in Atlanta, retiring because of ill health in 1936. She is survived by a brother, Frank Lyons, and a sister, Miss Sarah Lyons, both of Dedham, Massachusetts. Widely known throughout Geor gia. where she taught for so many years, Sister Anselm was beloved by generations of Georgia women for whom she laid the foundations of their education. MISS ELIZABETH MURPHY FUNERAL IN ATLANTA ATLANTA, Ga.—Funeral ser vices for Miss Elizabeth Murphy, who died June 23, were held from the Sacred Heart Church, the Rev. John Emmerth, S. M., officiating. Miss Murphy had lived in At lanta all of her life, and was a charter member of the Third Order of Mary. She is survived by a nephew. T. E. Falvey, and a great nephew, T. E. Falvey, Jr. MRS. CATHERINE DOYLE FUNERAL IN ATLANTA ATLANTA, Ga.—Funeral ser vices for Mrs. Catherine Doyle, who died July 1, were held from the Sacred Heart Church, the Right Rev. Msgr. Joseph F. Croke, pastor of St. Anthony’s Church, officiating. Mrs. Doyle is survived by two daughters, Miss Elizabeth Doyle and Mrs. W. C. Shannon; two sons, J. J. Doyle and E. J. Doyle, and several grandchildren. MISS JOSEPHINE MANLEY FUNERAL IN ATLANTA ATLANTA, Ga.—Funeral ser vices for Miss Josephine Manley, former music teacher, who died June 24 in West Palm Beach, were held here, the Rev. John Emmerth, S.
