Instruction in Religion
Given at Public Schools
in Greenville, N. C.
GREENVILLE, N. C. — The
movement for religious instruction
in the public schools of Greenville
began last year, and what was ac
complished urged those in favor
of the plan to procure a full-time
teacher this year for the Protest-,
ant group. Catholic students re
ceive their instruction from the
Rev. Charles J. Gable, pastor of
St. Peter’s Church.
This year ten students, repre
senting all of the Catholics in the
high school grades, are enrolled in
the religious course. Classes are
held daily for a fifty-minute per
iod. With the approval of Dr. J.
H. Rose, superintendent of schools,
a four-year course has been out
lined. The subject matter pre
scribed for this year is a follows:
Monday, religion based upon jus- j
tice; Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday, “Jesus the Life,” the
fourth book of the Archdiocese of
Chicago, is used as a text, Friday,
the study of the liturgy of the
Sunday taken from the Gospel.

hours devotion was begun in St.
Peter’s Church here on the Feast
of Christ the King, with the Rev.
Cletus Helfrick, pastor of Sacred
Heart Church, Salisbury, officiat
ing. Among the clergy attending
the closing exercises were the Rt.
Rev. Msgr. Michael A. Irwin, the
Rev. Julian Endler, C. P., New
Bern: the Rev. Giles Wade, T. O.
R., and the Rev. Timothy Shan
non, T. O. R., Tarboro.
Six women have been enrolled in
an instruction class for adults
which has just been formed in St.
Peter’s parish.

month of November, a series of
Missions were conducted by the
Catholic chaplains at Camp Gor
don in the various chapels on the
post, the Rev. Leonard Fries, the
Rev. Arthur O’Leary, O. S. B., the
Rev. Cajetan J. Sullivan, C. P.,
the Rev. John J. Callahan, and
the Rev. Michael Hinnebusch par
ticipating.
Father Fries, Father Arthur,
and Father Sullivan have recently
been promoted to the rank of
Captain.

BRUNSWICK. Ga. — Miss Mary
Mahoney, elderly and beloved life
resident of .Brunswick, died on No
vember 14, funeral services being
held from St. Francis Xaviet
Church, the Rev. William Hanlon
S. M., officiating.
“Miss Mary,” as she was affec
tionately known by her many
friends, was born in this city where
she spent her entire long and
useful life. She was the eldest
daughter of the late Timothy Ma
honey and Mrs. Mary Dunn Ma
honey, of Ireland, who came to
Brunswick soon after their marri
age. A daily communicant, she was
a faithful worker in all parish and
community activity.
Miss Mahoney is survived by two
sisters, Miss Anna Mahoney and
Miss Julia Mahoney, and one
brother, William Mahoney, all of
this city.

DIES IN ATLANTA
ATLANTA, Ga,—Funeral ser
vices for W. O. Martin, who died
October 25, were held from the
Sacred Heart Church, the Rev.
Thomas L. Finn officiating.
Mr. Martin, founder and head of
W. O. Martin Company, accoun
tants, was one of the first audi
tors and accountants in Atlanta.

DIES IN LAKELAND
LAKELAND, Ga.—Funeral ser
vices were held here for Layman
C. Carter, pioneer citizen of Lake
land and Lanier County, who died
on November 6, the Rev. Herman
J. Diemel, pastor of St. John the
Evangelist Church, Valdosta, offi
ciating.
Mr. Carter is survived by his
wife, who before her marriage was
Miss Augusta Allen; three daugh
ters, Mrs. W. L. Rents, Mrs. Eliza
beth Greene and Miss Minnie Lee
Carter, all of Naylor: a half-sister,
Mrs. Della Crews, of Nahunta, and
a half-brother, B. J. O’Brien, of
Valdosta.
MACON, Ga—Miss Gertrude
A. Benedetto, daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Aristide A. Benedetto has
been enrolled in the National
Catholic School of Social Service,
an affiliate of the Catholic Uni
versity of America. She will re
ceive her training in practical so
cial work at the department of
public welfare in Baltimore.
Miss Benedetto is a graduate of
Mount de Sales Academy in Ma
con, and received an A. B. De
gree, “Summa Cum Laude,” at
Sienna Heights College, Adrian,

FUNERAL IN AUGUSTA
AUGUSTA, Ga.—The Rev. J. E.
O’Donohoe, S. J., pastor of the
Sacred Heart Church, officiated at
the funeral services for Mrs. Irene
Bessinan Richards, widow of the
| late William Thomas Richards, Sr.,
who died in North Augusta on No
vember 20. Mrs. Richards is sur
vived by one son, W. Thomas Rich
ards, Jr., of Beech Island: two
daughters,, Mrs. IJegina Roby,
Washington, D. C., and Miss Julia
Richards, Ancon. Canal Zone, and
three grandchildren.
