Active Parish Groups
Aid Salisbury Pastor

SALISBURY. N. C.—Since the
Rev. Cletus J. Helfrick. pastor of
the Sacred Heart Church came to
Salisbury in February of this year,
after being transferred from St.
Paul’s Church in Henderson, the
rectory of the Sacred Heart Church
has been completely renovated, a
baldaeliino has been erected over
the main altar, and five stained-
glass ' windows installed in the
church.
A Catholic Youth Club was
organized in the parish during
March, with the following officers
elected to serve a year: Miss
Eunice Branch, president; Miss
Mildred Salesby, vice-president;
Miss Vivian Roueche, secretary,
and Charles Eakins, treasurer
Father •Helfrick serves as modera
tor of the club, whose twenty-eight
members by their enthusiastic in
terest, gives promise of a very]
effective source of Catholic Action
among the young people of the
parish.
The Catholic Women's Club in
Salisbury has made splendid prog
ress since Father Helfrick assumed
the duty of its spiritual director.
The organization, composed of all
women of the parish, also serves
as the Parent-Teacher Association
of the Sac-t:l Heart School. Pres
ent (ftcers of the club are; Mrs.
Dee Johnson, president; Mrs. J.
B. Branch, vice president, and
E. J. Gallagher, secretary-treas
urer. This is another very effec
tive unit of Catholic Action in the
Sacred Heart parish.
Young men from the Sacred
Heart parish who are now serving
in the armed forces of the United
States include Philip Branch. Rob
ert Harrison, Walter McCanless,
Edward Murphy, Richard O'Brien.
Edward Reizck and W. Henry
Womack in the .inny, and Elic
Clark, William Nash, Jr., Don
Fisher, George" O'Brien. Bernard
Roueche, Jr., David Roueche. Har
old Watson and Roger B. Young
in the Navy.
SISTERS OF MERCY
CONDUCT PARISH SCHOOL
SALISBURY. Is. C.—The Sacred
Heart parochial school is conduct
ed by the Sisters of Mercy, with
Sister Mary Patrick as Superior.
Other members ol the faculty are
Sister Mary Celestine, Sister Mary
Patrice and Sister Mary Rose.
Plans for the building of a new
school and convent have been de
ferred until after the war.
CONFIRMATIONS IN
DIOCESE OF RALEiGri
RALEIGH. N. C.-—On November
1, His Excellency, the Most Rev
Eugene J. McGuinness, D. D.,
Bishop of Raleigh, confirmed a
class of fifty-five at St. Benedict's
Church, Greensboro, and was cele
brant at Pontifical Benediction of
the Blessed Sacrament which fol
lowed. The Rev. Michael J. Beg
ley assisted as dedcon. and the
Rev. Denis M. McCarthy. C. M..
as subdeacon.
On October 28. Bishop McGuin
ness confirmed twenty-five adult
converts at St. Ann's Church,
which serves the Colored Catho
lics of Fayetteville. On Novem
ber 1 Bishop McGuinness also ad
ministered Confirmation to thirty-
eight children and seven adult
converts in Winston-Salem.

RALEIGH, N. C.—The Very'
Rev. Monsignor J. Lennox Federal,
rector * of the Cathedral of the
Sacred Heart, was guest of honor
at a reception tpndered by the
Catholic Daughters of America
here, October 26.
Monsignor Federal was elevated
to the dignity of a Papal Chamber-
lain, with the rank and title of
Very Reverend Monsignor, by His
Holiness Pope Pius XII, several
weeks ago, and was formally in
vested by the Most Rev. Eugene
J. McGuinness, Bishop of Raleigh,
on October 25.
The reception was neld in the
auditorium of the Sacred Heart
School, with members of the
Cathedral parish and other friends
of Monsignor Federal attending.
Monsignor Federal was also
honored at a banquet given by
Thomas F. Price Council, -Knights
of Columbus, of'which he is the
chaplain. Present on this occasion
were three other priests of the
Diocese of Raleigh recently honor
ed by the Holy See with elevation
to the dignity of Papal Chamber
lains, the Very Rev.' Msgr. Cornel
ius E. Murphy, of Wilmington;
ihe Very Rev. Msgr. Louis J. Bour,
of Asheville, and the Very Rev.
Peter McNerney, of Rocky Mount.
The Rt. Rev. Msgr. Dennis A.
Lynch, Chancellor of the Diocese
of Raleigh, who was invested as
a Domestic Prelate, was also a
guest at the dinner.

Federal, of Charlotte; the Very
Rev. Nicholas Bliley, O. S. B.,
prior of Belmont ^Abbey; the Rev.

FATHER HELFRICH
Formerly pastor of St. Paul’s
Church, Henderson, N. C., the Rev.
Cletus J. Helfrich was appointed
pastor of Sacred Heart Church,
Salisbury, N. C„, in February of
this year.

Mass of Requiem was offered for
the repose of the soul of the late
Paul Leo Haid, of New York City,
and great benefactor of Belmont
Abbey, by the Right Rev. Vincent
G. Taylor, O. S. B„ D. D., Abbot-
Ordinary of Belmont, in the Ab
bey Cathedral recently. The
Rev. Sebastian Doris, O. S. B.,
sub-prior, acted as assistant priest;
the Rev. Benedict Retteger, O. S.
B.. and the Rev. Joseph Tobin, O.
S. B.._as deacons of honor: the
Rev. Martin W. Hayes. O. S. B.. as
deacon, and the Rev. Gabriel
Stupaskv, O. S. B., sub-deacon.
Mr. Haid, nephew of the first
Abbot of Belmont, the Most Rev.
Leo Haid. O. S. B.„ D. D., grad
uated from Belmont in 1904, and
among his many benefactions to
liis alma mater was a contribu
tion of $75,000 to the erection of
the Haid gymnasium in 1930. At
the time of his death in August.
Mr. Haid was president of the Fi
delity Phoenix Insurance Com
pany and the American Eagle In
surance Company.
Holy Ghost Fathers at
Salisbury Colored Parish
SALISBURY. N. C.—The Color
ed parish in Salisbury, which is
a charge of the Holy Ghost
Fathers, is under the patronage of
Our Lady of Victories. The parish
was established by the Rev. Jo
seph A. Griffin, C. S. Sp., who is
now serving as a chaplain in the
United States Army, and the
Colored mission in Salisbury is
now a charge of the Rev. James J
Bradley, C. S. Sp.
VVAYNESVILLE SCHOOL
PUPILS PRESENT FANTASY
WAYNESVILLE, N. C — On Oc
tober 30, pupils of the primary
grades of St. John’s School, enter
tained the other students and their
parents with a playlet, “A Hallo
we'en Fantasy,” in St. John’s au
ditorium.
The cast of characters included
Walter Taliaferro, Talmadge Mor
ris, Aaron Greer, Dicks Boyd,
Salli Stovall, David Stewart, Laura
Woody, Dick Wilson, Jeff Reece,
Dick Boyd, Martha Maye, Mary
Cooper, Ida Bushee, Sarah Garri
son, Laura Woody, Nancy Kerley
and Lane Prcvost.
The pupils of the fifth, sixth,
and seventh grades af St. John’s
are presenting a Thanksgiving play
called “A Wartime Thanksgiving,”
with Bob Hardin, editor of the
school paper, St. John’s Messenger,
announcing the program.
Sister Mary Corine’s class will
present ‘‘The Doll’s Christmas
Eve’” on the evening of December
21.

Private Hargrove
Former Belmont Boy
BELMONT. N. C.—“See,. Here,
Private Hargrove,” rated as the
most refreshing bit of humor pub
lished since the entry of the
United States in the present
world-wide conflict, has as its
author Marion Hargrove, of Char
lotte, formerly a student at Bel
mont Abbey College.
It was at Belmont Abbey, per
haps, that “Private” Hargrove’s
journalistic and literary ambitions
were born, for he served as edi
tor of the Abbey College paper,
“Contact,” before becoming fea
ture editor of The Charlotte News,
a position he held when he enter
ed- the Army in July, 1941.
Now a corporal, the former Bel
mont Abbey College student is
serving on the stati o f “Yank,”
the U. S. Army’s official magazine,
and his book, which accounts his
experiences since donning uni
form, is maintaining a place
among the best sellers.
“OPEN HOUSE” FOR SOLDIERS
AT ATLANTA K. OF C. HOME
ATLANTA, Ga. — On the first
Sunday afternoon in November
Christ the King Division of the
Catholic War Service Group spon
sored the open house for ser
vice men at the Knights of Co
lumbus Club. Mrs. Grover Heyser,
Mrs. Bernard J. Kane and Mrs.
Joseph Connelly were hostesses,
and Mrs. Julian Riley generously
donated refreshments for ihe en
tertainment.
These open house entertain
ments each Sunday are sponsored
by the various organizations in the
War Service Group, and are at
tended by an average of ' 1,000
men in uniform.
